Single-volume handbooks are popular as reference sources. They offer a focused treatment on
specialized topics which have a variety of interrelated topics that teachers and researchers are
likely to understand inadequately. In an increasingly specialized profession, most teachers and
researchers understand a few applied linguistics topics well, but there are many other topics with
which they have only a passing acquaintance. English pronunciation is more likely than most
topics to fit into the second category.
One of the best things about editing this handbook has been learning that many of the things that
we thought we knew were mistaken. Our authors come from many countries and most of the
continents, and many of them we had not had the pleasure of working with before starting this
project. It is clear that brilliant work on English pronunciation is being done by extraordinarily
talented and interesting researchers and teachers throughout the world. By bringing them
together in one volume, we hope that you, the readers, will find many new and provocative ways
to think about English pronunciation, and that you will find the handbook as interesting as we
have in putting it together.

John M. Levis is Professor of Applied Linguistics and TESL at Iowa State University. His
research specialties are English intonation, the teaching of pronunciation, and the training of
teachers. He was co-editor (with Murray Munro) of the Phonetics and Phonology section of the
Wiley-Blackwell Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics. He is the creator and organizer of the
annual Pronunciation in Second Language Learning and Teaching Conference
(pslltconference.com), and is the editor for the Journal of Second Language Pronunciation. He is
co-editor (with Alene Moyer) of Social dynamics in second language accent, published by De
Gruyter Mouton. His articles have appeared in TESOL Quarterly, Applied Linguistics, System,
Annual Review of Applied Linguistics, ELT Journal, TESOL Journal, World Englishes, SPEAK
Out and Language Awareness.
Marnie Reed is Associate Professor of Education at Boston University. Her research specialties
are the role of auditory feedback in the perception and production of connected discourse, the
role of metalinguistic feedback in the acquisition of morphosyntax, and the role of metacognition
in the teaching of English intonation. She is co-author (with Christina Michaud) of Sound
Concepts: An Integrated Pronunciation Course published by McGraw-Hill, Sound Concepts:
Strategies for Listening and Speaking to be published by the University of Michigan Press, and
Goal-Driven Lesson Planning for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, published
by the University of Michigan Press, which incorporates materials and concepts in teaching
pronunciation.
