with the expectation that all students enrolled will demonstrate high standards of preparedness and
performance in each lesson, participation in studio events, and professional conduct.

Attendance is mandatory at all lessons. Unexcused absences are not permitted. Permission to be
excused must be requested 24 hours in advance.

Grading:
Lesson Preparation: 50%
Professionalism: 25%
Reedmaking: 15%
Performance: 10%

Lesson Preparation:
Each lesson will be given an individual grade based on the following criteria. The average of these grades
will determine your final lesson preparation grade.

Lesson assignment is well prepared and technical delivery is excellent. A strong work ethic, good time
management skills, initiative and dedication are clearly evident. Outstanding progress musically and
technically has been made.

Lesson Grade of 3.5 Excellent

Lesson assignment is prepared. A consistent, methodical pattern of practice is evident, and any
repeated material shows improvement. Musicality is present but needs improvement. Good progress

the lesson; however, the technical and musical errors in addition to inconsistent practice habits have
created a lesson delivery below expectations.

Lesson Grade of 2.0 Poor

Lesson material is clearly not prepared and demonstrates little or no consistent practice. The student
exhibits a lack of motivation and/or discipline. The student has not acted upon the requests made by
the instructor.

Lesson Grade of 1.0/1.5 Inferior

Repeated lesson material is again not prepared. The student struggles with basics, with no
consideration for musical aspects. Poor quality reeds are seriously affecting the performance.

Lesson Grade of 0.0 Failure

Unexcused absence.

Professionalism:
Arrive to lessons and ensemble rehearsal on time, warmed-up, and with the proper equipment (reeds,
stands, music, etc.). Prepare music outside of class. Respond quickly to scheduling and other emails. Be
an engaged and contributing member of the ensemble in coaching and rehearsal.

Reedmaking:
All bassoon majors must make at least 25 reeds per semester. You will be graded on retention and
application of techniques discussed in reed class and on increasing independence as a reed maker.

Performance:
Successfully perform music in studio class, sectionals, and in solo recitals as assigned.
