Facet potabilizers are designed to meet the need on board ship to treat casing. With a radiation level of 2.573 , a significant transformation occurs
the water produced by evaporators, in such a way as to produce suitable in the metabolism of the cells. This is followed by a slowing down of their
drinking water. This is achieved using the processes of re-hardening and reproductive functions until the bacteria are totally eliminated.
sterilization.
MODE OF OPERATION
RE-HARDENING OF WATER: This process consists of adding mineral
salts to distilled water, in sufficient quantities to achieve a pH of between Facet fresh water potabilizers have two main constituent parts:
7.5 and 8, always below 12 F.
RE-HARDENING FILTER
The water produced by the on board water evaporators has the following STERILIZER
characteristics:
The distilled water, which comes from the evaporator or from the storage
Salinity: Between 0.5 and 4 ppm of NaCl tank, is passed through the generator's re-hardening filter, where the water
pH: ~6 flows uniformly through the bed of mineral salts and takes them up. In
CO2 content: 40 mg/l. this way, the necessary re-hardening, or pH adjustment, is achieved.
Oxygen present.
Next, part or all of the mineralised water passes through the treatment
The pH value of ~6 is caused by the presence of carbonic gas, which is chamber of the sterilizer, where it is treated using ultraviolet radiation.
produced by the decomposition of the carbonates present in sea water.
This gas is found dissolved in the distilled water. In the next page, we can see a typical flow diagram.
When the mineral salts are added to distilled water, the CO2 is neutralised The models (F-75 to F-2000-2) incorporate a mineral salts regeneration
and the pH of the water is increased. system.
STERILIZATION OF WATER: Once the necessary mineral salts have been OPTIONS
added, the water must be sterilized to remove the bacteria which have
survived the process of evaporation, which takes place under vacuum Skid assembly
conditions and at 60 C. UV sensor
Automatic doser
This ster ilizatio n is carried out using ultraviolet radiation. Active carbon filter
By-pass to the sterilizer
With this method, the water which is to be treated is passed through a By-pass to the rehardening filter
chamber where it is subjected to radiation from U.V. generators. These By-pass to the active carbon filter
generators are isolated from the water by means of a protective, isothermic

JOWA Ag-S is well-known to the shipping industry.
For fresh water Many thousands of ships have had it installed onboard
since its introduction in 1970. Due to its simple design
disinfection and high quality, the first installed units are still in
operation, only periodical replacement of the electrode
is needed.
Sterilizing drinking water with silver is a
very old method and has been adopted The JOWA Ag-S comes as one unit ready to be fitted
frequently in many parts of the world. As onto the bulkhead. It consists of an electronic cabinet,
an electrode chamber with two shut-off valves, a flow
a matter of fact, this method goes back to setting valve and a pressure gauge. All these parts are

base plate. A flow switch is also installed.
Disinfection of water by dosing silver ions into water is
completely harmless to human as well as animals. The Main Features
amount of silver ions in the disinfected water is well
below the maximum amount stated e.g. in the directives Sterilizing capacity max. 15 m/h
issued by the WHO.

HYDROPHORE
Picking up the thread from the CARTOON at http://marine.ppeg.co.in/hydrophore
Hydrophore is one of the most important equipments on board a vessel. It is responsible to make
available drinking water in the entire accommodation.
It basically consists of Pressure vessel which contains water and pressurized with air. It is the AIR
pressure which propels the water to the UPPERMOST deck on the ship.
Naturally this Hydrophore needs to be CHARGED with air at regular intervals ( which the watchkeeping
Engineers keep doing ).
The fundamental principle is thus very SIMPLE to understand. Having said that, there is also slightly
more than the apparent simplistic logic.
--CUT IN Pressure ---Example --Hydrophore needs to CUT IN at say at 2.5 barThis 2.5 bar should be a
pressure which is SUFFICIENT ENOUGH to push water upto THE HIGHEST DECK when people generally
Retire for the Day and Take BATH ETC. This pressure would ofcourse vary from vessel to vessel
depending upon the number of Decks and the number of CREW WHO TAKE BATH .:-)
---CUT OUT PRESSURE The pressure at which the pump should cut out. Let us say this is 5 bar.
Now we have a look at the IMPLICATIONS of charging the hydrophore with these two PARAMETERS .
Observe fig 1 water level when the pressure is 2.5 bar. The volume of Air available is V1
When the pump cuts in and pumps water into the hydrophore Air gets compressed till 5 bar
and the pump Cuts Out.Observe that V2 amount of water GOT PUMPED between the two
operating pressures of 2.5 bar and 5 bar
Observe Fig 3 Compare the same with figure 2 and observe Volume of Water Pumped
=V3.You can easily see that a VERY SMALL Volume of water got pumped between the same
operating Operating pressures of 2.5 bar and 5 Bar.

It is not very difficult to visualize that If hydrophore operates as per Fig 3 ..the pump will
CUT IN AND CUT OUT very frequently and the MOTOR CAN GET BURNT OUT.
DO YOU charge the hydrophore to 5 bar CUT OUT pressure or to 2.5 bar CUT IN
Pressure at a particular Water level????
If you charge Hydrophore to 5 bar You cannot ANTICIPATE the level of water at 2.5
bar CUT IN pressure, once water gets consumed. So there is a RISK of the water level
dropping BELOW the outlet pipe and air will find its way through the outlet pipe..
Obviously charging to CUT OUT pressure is a BAD WAY to operate a hydrophore.
So the Best way is the KEEP water Level comfortably ABOVE the OUTLET PIPE and
charge it to the CUT IN PRESSURE of 2.5 bar. This will ensure maximum volume of
water per cut-in cut-out cycle.
Again ,If you keep it too close to the OUT LET PIPE and there is some AIR LEAK into the
vessel through the Charging Valve the water level will gradually fall below the outlet
pipe .
I assume this hint is good enough and you can catch on and build it up .. All
the best for those who will venture into figuring it out
