Marks
(a) State two (2) main effects on the gain (magnitude) and the phase-shift between the output
and input signals that resulted from increasing the operating frequency of an amplifier.
(2 marks)
(b) Figure Q1(b) shows a voltage-follower large signal pulse response of an op-amp.
Determine the approximate slew rate of this amplifier.
(2 marks)
Figure Q1(b)
(c) The op-amp which has the slew rate as calculated in Figure Q1(b) above is connected
as a noninverting amplifier with a gain of 20 and must have a flat response up to 30 kHz.
Determine the maximum peak-peak input signal, Vi(p-p) that can be applied without
distorting the output. Assume that input is a sinusoidal signal and the op-amp is initially
nulled.
(3 marks)
(d) The 741C op-amp is wired as noninverting amplifier with these parameters: break
frequency, f o = 5 Hz , dc open-loop gain, AOL = 2 10 5 and closed-loop gain, ACL = 20 .
Determine the closed-loop bandwidth, f F and also determine the stability of this circuit
by filling up Table Q1(d). Write the completed loop gain magnitude, AOL B and phase
shift, mathematical expressions that are used to calculate the results. Assume ideal
op-amp is available.

(e) The frequency response of a certain op-amp is shown in Figure Q1(e). Write the open-
loop gain expression, AOL(f) for the op-amp as a function of break frequencies and dc gain
AOL. Determine the magnitude of the open-loop gain and phase shift between the input
and output of the op-amp if the frequency of operation is 10 kHz.

QUESTION 2
(a) Differentiate the characteristics of three types of practical active filters, namely
Butterworth, Chebychev and Elliptic.
(3 marks)
(b) Design a first-order high-pass Butterworth filter to have a gain of 16 in the passband and
a low cut-off frequency, fL of 10 kHz.
(5 marks)
(c) For the designed circuit of part (b) above, determine the output voltage peak amplitude,
Vo(p) at frequencies of 5 kHz, 10 kHz and 20 kHz, if an input voltage peak amplitude of Vi(p)
= 2.2 mV is applied.
(4 marks)
(d) A low-pass Butterworth filter is to be designed to pass through speech signal consists of
300 Hz to 4 kHz frequency components. This speech signal is corrupted by high frequency
noise signal consists of frequency components greater than 100 kHz. The filter should be
designed to have a unity gain and provides attenuation of the noise components by at
least 70 dB. Determine the number of poles required in this design. Sketch the frequency
response of this filter design with appropriate details.

QUESTION 3
(c) Determine the condition for sustained oscillations for the maximum oscillation frequency
as in part (b) above.
