CoolTan Arts Sponsored Walk – Be part of the Story of London


Join the fun, celebrate Mad Heritage and World Mental Health Day *SIGN-UP NOW*
Saturday 9th October 2010
11.30am for a 12noon start
Where: Maudsley Hospital, Denmark Hill, SE5 8AZ (by the main entrance)
Finish: Tate Modern, Bankside, SE1 9TG
Join CoolTan Arts Largactyl Shuffle, celebrate mad culture and help us raise money to enable CoolTan
Arts to move to a much needed new building and continue running our high quality arts activities!
Celebrate mad heritage, explore the past, present and future of madness and psychiatric innovation. We
will be celebrating World Mental Health Day and ‘mad’ culture by placing disposable public sculptures,
produced in our Sculpture Workshop, along the route of the walk.
Last year 90 people joined the walk, and we raised £3,000. Let’s make it £6,000 this year!
From the Maudsley Hospital to Tate Modern, a sponsored walk to raise money and challenge stigma

‘Anthropology’ launch at Liberty festival


Saturday 4th Sept 2010, 1pm-5pm, Trafalgar Square
CoolTan Arts launches its poetry book ‘Anthropology’, produced by CoolTan Arts’ poets in our workshop,
at the Liberty Festival on 4th September 2010. CoolTan Arts will have a stall where you can buy the
poetry book and our poets will also give you a flavour of their poems in a short performance/poetry
reading in the Comedy & Cabaret space at .50pm and the Red Jesus Tent.
The Liberty Festival celebrates the contribution of Deaf and disabled people to London's culture. It will be
a great chance to meet the poets, buy to poetry book and enjoy performances from a wide range of UK
artists and companies as well as workshops, stalls, food and much more.
Liberty welcomes everyone and is friendly and accessible. Complete programme on

Largactyl 2 Go: Olympic-inspired urban exploration walk
Saturday 11th September 2010, 2pm, Hackney Marshes
Join CoolTan Arts for an urban exploration walk of the area where the Olympics and Paralympics will
take place in 2012; find out about the place, people and local community, and how the Olympics /
Paralympics affect the everyday lives of Hackney community. Experience the clash between the former
industrial area and the funky artistic area Hackney has become, and how it changed with the
preparations and constructions for the Olympics. It will be entertaining, with lots of quirky details and
facts you never knew before!
Walkers meet at 2pm at Hackney Marshes in Homerton Road, London, E9 5PF! The walk will end at
Pudding Mill Lane by View tube; some of the walk leaders will be able to take you back to the main
Two2Go event at Hackney Marshes.

Largactyl Shuffle: Artist Austin Spare – The 20th Century Blake?


Saturday 18th September 2010 12pm
Where: Maudsley Hospital, Denmark Hill, SE5 8AZ (by the main entrance)
Finish: Tate Modern, Bankside, SE1 9TG
Discover artist Austin Spare, whose first exhibition was at a place called Walworth Town Hall, explore
the local history of Southwark, and uncover the history of mental health in the borough.
CoolTan Arts Largactyl Shuffle is a guided cultural walk from the Maudsley Hospital to Tate Modern
designed to encourage mental and physical wellbeing, through art, exercise, humour and history, de-
stigmatizing mental distress.
Come along and add to the discussion and exploration, share your thoughts and ideas, enjoy the
company of others and have fun.
Walkers meet at 12 noon at the main entrance of Maudsley Hospital, Denmark Hill, SE5 8AZ. Call

CoolTan Arts AGM


Monday 20th September 2010 6pm - 9pm
You are invited to join our AGM on 20th September 2010 starting at 6pm and finishing at 9pm.
All are welcome.
CoolTan Arts will present their annual report and discuss current and future activities. Your chance to get
involved. Join us for a social and informative evening! We hope many volunteers and participants will be
there.

Ruby Wax – Losing It

A new show from Ruby Wax, performed at CoolTan Arts!
Ruby Wax’s acerbic wit and worldly wisdom combined with Judith Owen’s touching and poignant songs
create a show that is at once vulnerable and surprisingly thought-provoking as well as being laugh-out-
loud funny.

An exhibition with the Together Our Space Gallery


CoolTan Arts participants from the Visual Arts group (William Ball, Howard Luke, Graeme Newton and
Alusine Shuma) have been selected to exhibit their creations alongside other artists in the ‘Non-Fiction’
exhibition at the Together Our Space Gallery. The oncoming exhibition features the creative narration of
facts and accounts of life, events and experience though art.

WORKSHOPS AND ACTIVITIES – OPEN TO PEOPLE EXPERIENCING MENTAL DISTRESS
Join a regular workshop at CoolTan
Do you need to get out of the house? Come along to one of CoolTan’s workshops to meet people,
learn new skills, have fun, and break out of isolation with like-minded people. Our workshops are
open to any adults experiencing mental distress with access to direct payments or Community Care

Self-Advocacy Training Skills Programme – August / September 2010


Self-advocacy skills training can assist in knowing and accessing your rights and getting your

Why volunteer? – Need help getting back into work, want to give back to the community
Volunteers do a wonderful job and CoolTan couldn’t exist without the work they do. Volunteering at
CoolTan Arts can help you gain confidence and new skills, get work experience, make new friends.

Event volunteers and event photographers
Do you want to help out at an event or with exhibitions? There’s a lot happening at CoolTan and we
need as many helpers as possible. No matter how much or little time you have, please drop us a line if
you are interested in volunteering at an event!

Web and IT volunteer


Are you good with IT and have knowledge of WordPress content management software, HTML and
photoshop? We are looking for a reliable volunteer that can help with uploading text, documents and
images to CoolTan Arts’ website.

Walk Leaders Wanted - The Largactyl Shuffle Group is looking for new walk leaders
Meeting Time: Thursdays 2.00 – 4.00pm at CoolTan Arts
If you enjoy our walks, why not help us with the next walks?
If you are interested in volunteering on the walk, either as a steward, contribute to walk leading or the
research please get in touch. Learn about local history, go on trips, learn new skills, get fit and have fun!

Services for Health and Social Care Organisations, mental health practitioners, GPs,
social workers, key workers…
CoolTan Arts can work with GPs and other health professionals to meet the social care needs of their
clients. We are very keen to meet you and your teams and tell you more about the services CoolTan Arts
offers.
