Chicken Billy is an artist and designer Billy Hayes from Fort


Worth, Texas, U.S.A.
How he makes art: Keep it simple and real while being honest
and natural.

His recipe: Take Hanna Barbera, Hulk Hogan, James Brown, Fort Worth Zoo, B.B.
King, Hank Williams III, Jesus Christ, mix until the image is bright like an angel.
Add a pair of cowboy boots and a pair of jeans, some Mexican beer, your choice
and put them all on a surface only using flat vector shapes. Well then... there you
have it. Tastes like Chicken!

The first time I heard the expression la cscara amarga was


in the summer of 2005, I was speaking with my grandmother,
who is a right-wing person that goes to church, but she is a
gem. She mentioned that old expression referring to left-wing
people, the people with a critical thinking about establishment.

In those days I was finishing my first in the daily battle of earning money in
collage series and for me it was the this trade so close to devil. Although
most critical thing I ever saw, so I I didnt look for a name for my new
thought that la cscara amarga could studio, it had to be named somehow,
define very well the spirit of those col- and considering the way I wanted to
lages. Also, at that time I was going to focus my business on and the way of
begin to work by myself as a freelance my personal work, la cscara amarga
graphic designer, after ten years of sounded good to me. Now, after all this
working for others. And I wanted (and long story, many times Ive been asking
I still want) my professional activity myself if it could be more simple and
to be coherent with my way of under- logical to call me by my name, but the
standing the world, I didnt want that fact is that La Cscara Amarga is what
the essence of those collages got lost its written in my business cards.

Carlos
Alvarez Cabrero

Carlos Alvarez Cabrero is a 42-year old illustrator from Oviedo,


Spain. He earns a living from his paintings and engravings,
which allows him to do the kind of work he wants.

He makes low cost videofilms too, mostly for the fun of it, as it gives no money
(but not video art, that he dislikes). A lot of his paintings (drawings etc.) have
much to do with his home town and environment and there are often funny or
ironic texts in the pictures.

Melissa
Murillo
Melissa Murillo, also known under her alias Meyoko, is an art-
ist based in Berlin, Germany. Obsessed with details, ephemera,
nature, and dreams, she grew up on a visual diet of the strange
trips in her books from amazons. The relationship between
man and machine is another obvious fascination as she often
juxtaposes organic and mechanical images to form surreal and
whimsical narratives. Birds, insects and organisms are also a
common theme in her illustrations.
Her work has been exhibited in Berlin and featured in fashion
and lifestyle magazines in Paris, London, New York, Greece,
Rome, New Zealand...

When Im drawing, my mind and my soul begin to get lost, totally submerged
in the process and before long, hourshave gone by unawares. But to me, art, in
any form is what gives us a sense of who we are, a peak into our imaginations
and the passionate desires that make us individual. Its almost like a mold; as I
pour myself into it what comes out is a solid piece of who I am and the more I
develop in this area, the more expressive I become. It is akin to singing from the
depths of your soul. It flows in much the same way. I truly believe that when-
ever a person is born hes given the gift of creativity and an artistic ability (or
abilities) in which to express themselves in a way that no one else can precisely
duplicate.

Yamada

Yuji Yamada was born in 1985 in Kamakura, Japan. He lives


and works in Kawasaki city. He wanted to become a web de-
signer, so he studied at a professional school in Tokyo after
graduating from high school. But very soon he became sick
of digital design because all the work was done by PC. So Yuji
decided to become a painter or illustrator.

There is nothing but the reality of battling appearance of athletes. I do cut out
such scene, I want to keep drawing a picture of the planar yet realistic. I just like
sports. Sports is everything.

My worksare the best ones to comment on my personality,


thoughthey may not seem explicit from the first glimpse.
Everything inside me is reproduced through abstract forms,
therefore my works are slightly lacking straighforwardness.
Each and every new object I depict helps me to know myself
better. The art I am making at the moment is an attempt to
better comprehend my personal inner space. Through under-
standing the inner space I can better understand the world
surrounding me which corresponds with the intention to en-
trenchinto Art most deeply. And the Art, in its turn, isthe
most primordialthing Ive got into.

Kassan

My work is a way of meditation, a way of slowing down time


though the careful observation of overlooked slices of my
environment inhebited by my acquaintances and their subtle
emotions. My paintings try to mimic life in both scale and
complexity.

The viewer is given an eye level perspective of the subject. A view that is unbi-
ased and in its most raw condition. It is my intent to control the medium of oil
paint to the extent that the image stands alone without evidence of the artist.
I displace textures from their natural environment by moving them out of the
context. By turning an ordinary painting surface into a textured trompe loeil
documentation of the city or turning the surface into a life sized representation
of a figure in space that transmits feeling this technical process allows for the
viewers experience to be altered.
The thoughts behind my chosen subject matter. My effort is to constantly learn
to document reality with a naturalistic, representational painting technique
which allows for pieces to be inherent contradictions, paintings that are both
real and abstract. My influences are the work of life size old master paintings,
urban stencil and graffiti street art, Marcel Duchamps found objects, abstract
paintings by Robert Rauschenberg, and finally the sheer conceptual and execut-
ed realism of Caravaggio.

Ben
Alper

Ben Alper was born in Westerly, Rhode Island in 1983. He


recently moved to Brooklyn, NY after completing his BFA in
Photography from the Massachusetts College of Art & Design.

He is a founding member of The Exposure Project, a photo collective designed


to facilitate and nurture collaboration across the medium. With this group, Ben
has helped self-publish four photo books, has put on various group exhibitions
and, most recently, co-curated Graphic Intersections, a collaborative project
loosely based on the Surrealist game Exquisite Corpse. In addition, Bens work
has been featured in Humble Arts Foundations Group Show, the Photographic
Resource Centers Northeast Exposure Online, Wassenaar Magazine and Ahorn
Magazine.

Dido
Fontana

Born in Italy in the early 70s Dido Fontana grew up surround-


ed by his dads camera and art works, doing himself art with
different media, reading the big giants and looking at every
kind of imagery. In this way in his mind increased an extraor-
dinary heterogenic plethora of images you now can find in his
photos which represent not only a figure and where theres no
message but a world.

His soul is baroque and his eye is damned and voyeuristic but his style is raw
and sexy, fashion and anti-fashion at the same time. But first of all it is direct
and pure, without alternations or embellishments. You can have a taste of it in
his book just published: 160 color pages, on high quality shining paper, full of
references and links, deep and strong and that you can also leaf through only

Frederike
Wetzels

Frederike Wetzels was born in 1988 in North Germany. She is


a student of photography in Dortmund but started to work on
this series during her exchange to the University of Plymouth
in 2009.

Since that time she is interested in the idea of photography as a reality of the
second degree.Its closeness to the real and though the capacity to transform
the real into a new layer of narrative fascinates her a lot. Thus in her latest ar-
chitecture and landscape studies she considers any place a psychologically
charged space as much as she works with the portrait as philosophical construct
too. In this way her recent pictures seek and provoke questions about longing
and belonging and the balance between nature and the city.

Ian J.
Whitmore

Ian Whitmore was born and raised in Nebraska. He attended


the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and received his BFA in
2003. After a brief break he relocated and earned his MFA at
Indiana UniversityBloomington in 2007.

He has exhibited work nationally. More recently his work has been seen in the
HeyHotShot! list of Honorable Mentions, the 14th Annual Photo-Op Exhibition
at Photographic Center Northwest, Texas National 2007, Tacoma Contemporary-
Woolworth Installation Series, and the South Bend Regional Museum of Art
Biennial 24; winning a merit ward for images from his body of work Channels, as
well as a curators choice in the Chicago Art Open 2007.
He currently teaches part-time in the Photography Department at Columbia Col-
lege - Chicago while continuing his work as a Photographer and freelancing as
an Art Director.

Nowhere

Nowhere is an ambiguous yet ubiqui-


tous space. It exists in our civic decora-
tions and our commercial landscape as
irresponsible and irrelevant ornamen-
tation. We see these scenes every day
but rarely acknowledge their functional
purpose or aesthetic value.

Through these photographs I am seek-


ing answers to questions regarding
the psychology of our civic landscape.
Critically, I want to examine the ironic
and garish nature of the spaces that
surround us and better understand
the attenuated value of such places.
By drawing the viewer into the banal I
wish to confront the illusion that these
environments are important and of
interest. This frail illusion is meant to
dissolve quickly; unveiling impotence
and benign decoration.

Those long, promising paths that once


led us into the horizon have been
cleared, leveled and paved repeatedly.
Following the rhythm of progress our
civic body ceaselessly expands. The
horizon draws near collapsing in on
usand it is becoming more and more
clear that we have arrived nowhere in
particular.

Channels

This work is a visual inquiry into the


personal spaces where our televisions
reside. This point of contact between
the viewer and the world has become
customary in contemporary culture,
facilitating the exchange of information
and the satisfaction of certain desires.
In recent years we have developed a
collective and public eagerness to peer
into each others lives; we see this in our
entertainment, news and the Internet.

If we view these spaces passively and


voyeuristically, the way we view the
world through the television, certain
questions arise. How are we viewing
one another and through which lenses?
Through which lens do we find greater
authenticity, honesty and clarity? This
developing dialogue between the
perspectives of the viewer, the photog-
rapher are intriguing and revealing. As
these lenses are realized, and then fold
into one another, the viewer can make
discoveries of their ownperspectives
and criticisms that illuminate truer and
more honest forms in these portraits
where the television is not longer the
crux of our understanding.

Leninbk

LENINBK is a photography studio + painting + design + video.


Created by a photographer and visual director, and a plastic
artist and graphic designer. Originated from the need to in-
tegrate everything we do and want to say. The starting point
of each work is a concept, aesthetic and theoretical. The form
justifies the content and the content justifies the form.

Leninbk is a commercial project with a not-so-classic aesthetic criteria.


They love Terry Richardson, Hedi Slimane and Juergen Teller. Also i-D Mag, PIG
and Juxtapoz. But they live in Latin America.
They do everything: idea, production, photography, design, painting, directing,
video and extras.

Valerie
Phillips

I met Amber when she was 15. She came to my studio for a
casting. She was quiet and feisty at the same time, and kind of
bratty and fascinating. I loved her slow-paced, drawn out Ken-
tucky sentences, so perfectly out of place in East London. And
I really liked how she didnt seem to give a shit.
She was just Amber and that was good enough.

I met her again when she was 18. She was back in London running around being
a model. She showed up to meet me one morning looking wrecked and glow-in-
the-dark pale. You could just about see through her. She looked like the star of a
70s horror film, harrowed and mesmorisingly beautiful. I walked her to her first
casting of the day. On the way she cashed travellers cheques to buy cigarettes,
Dr. Pepper and a tuna sandwich. At the casting six grown ups sat around a table
eating crisps and flicking through Ambers model book, saying nothing to her the
entire time.

Amber is 19. She used to be a model. her head, or taken out her cheek
Earlier in the year she quit to become piercings, or dyed her hair green, or be

+Noah
For Winkler+Noah photography was the most fitting point of
arrival for an artistic itinerary that they began instinctively
from childhood, exploring all the forms of expression that they
encountered painting, drawing and sculpture amalgamat-
ing them and trying out blends between different media.

This creative need for self-expression matured over the years, first becoming
curiosity and then a strong will to create and to photograph. After a professional
detour as an illustrator and graphic designer, Noah met Winkler and this acted
as a detonator, producing a mixture fusing traditional photography with experi-
mentation.
What their pictures reveal is a sensation of hyper-reality: the protagonists of
their portraits appear in a real context, but they stand out from it as if highlight-
ed by reality itself. They are stark, intense photos because each single picture
encloses an idea and conveys powerful emotions to the observer. The artists
deal personally with post-production so that the creative process joins up with
itself like a circle.
They have received recognition all over the world and their works are been ex-
hibited in New York, London and Milan.

Hey

Easy Hey is a 26-year old illustrator and designer. He was born


and raised in Rennes in Western France. Growing roughly in
the jungle, big fan of Johnny Weissmuller, his work is principal-
ly connected with nature. In 2004, with Josh Hayes and Oktus,
he founded the DELKOGRAPHIK collective, then in 2007, they
created the DELKOGRAPHIK STUDIO (www.delkographik.com)
which is a design office, a shop and a gallery. They will cel-
ebrate the sixth anniversary of the Label this year.
