Different Aspects of Contemporary Arts

Conceptual - focus is on the idea, which can be either abstract or social;


Social current social & political topics are dealt with, often from critical perspective
Expressive both content & form is meaningful & communicative
Popular culture - issues and aspects of popular culture are dealt with, either by conceptualizing or
criticizing;
Poetic - content or form is poetic in nature;
Biographical - means of expression can be social, poetical or expressive;
Documentary - approach is documentary or holds elements of research;
Sense related - total art work, installations which are often interactive and affect different senses.
Interdisciplinary - combining or involving two or more academic disciplines or fields of study into one
activity.

Materials used in Sculptural Processes


1. Stone can only be carved, drilled, abraded, and polished.
2. Wood lends itself to the same processes more easily although modern technology permits it to be
permanently bent and molded.
3. Metals can be cast, cut, drilled filled, extruded, bent, forged and stamped.
4. Bronze- has beautiful surface and color characteristics and is the most common casting material.
5. Terracotta or clay - is more responsive than wood or stone. It possesses little strength or tension or
compression and requires armature for support.
6. Wax it is not permanent and can easily be changed or damaged in handling.

Sculpture Process:
Subtractive where the material is removed or carved out until the desired form is visible
Additive wherein the material is added part by part until the form is completed.

The Four Basic Sculpture Techniques


Carving involves cutting or chipping away a shape from a mass of stone, wood or other hard
material.
Modeling are create when a soft or malleable material such as clay, is built using an armature
and then shaped to create a form.
Casting - a mold is used to form molten bronze(or other material) into a desired shape.
Construction - welding, gluing, nailing materials together
Assemblage - assembling found objects in unique ways.

Significant National Contemporary Artist

1. Abdulmari Imao - was named National Artist of the Philippines for Sculpture in 2006. A Tausg,
Imao is the first Moro to receive the recognition. His most remarkable sculpture is Sarimanok with 8
Fishes.
2. Ramon Orlina- Father of the Philippine Glass Sculpture. (Sumptuous in Amber is one of his
famous creation.).
3. Josephine is an interdisciplinary installation artist who incorporates video, sculpture,
performance and sound into her artworks. One of her most renowned creation is General
Mariana
4. Ohm David in his installation art The Grid he made a series of wire mesh that forms a
box structure and projected light onto it from different angles.
5. Roger Tibon His series of bamboo trumpets seems to be blowing their mighty sounds
towards infinite space. This installation art is known as Echoes Within

Local Materials in the Philippines


Materials Products

Abaca belongs to Banana family. Its fiber has a natural luster slippers, ropes
with colors ranging from pure white to ivory and dark brown.

Bakbak is the outermost covering or leaf sheath of the abaca mat, boxes
stalk. It is a flat thick durable sheath as twine or braided. The
strong brown fiber used to make furniture.

Tikog belongs to sea grasses. It is a native reed plant used as a bags, decorative mats
raw material for mat weaving.

Buntal is a cylindrically shaped fibers. The supple ivory white shoes, window blinds
strands are quite durable, pliable, and have good dyeing
qualities.

Buri is extracted from the matured leaves of the buri palm. The hats, baskets
fiber is durable and resistant to moisture.

Coir is the fibrous material surrounding the fruit of the coconut fiber carpets, wall covering
tree.

Nito is a plant belonging to the fern family that grows bread tray, lampshade
abundantly in the hinterlands of Mindanao.
Pandan is a tropical plant. It is processed and transformed into baskets, hats
splints that are being used as raw material.

Raffia is a fiber extracted from unopened buri leaf in 3 stages. It placemats, slippers
is loom woven into fabrics or used as wall coverings, upholstery
material, folding doors and window hangings.

Rattan belongs to the palm family. There are different types of picture frames, furniture
rattan palms, such as high or low climbers, single stemmed or
clustered rattan species.
