PRESENTER: With resentment, strife, hate came this exceptional
gift to the music world. The creation of this album was
overcast by break-ups however, the band kept fighting
and stayed together for one sole reason, the music.

Welcome to Fleetwood, Rumours. Today we cast our minds

back to the making of one of the most influential
albums of all time. Fleetwood Macs Grammy award
winning Rumours is still today a much-loved album
boasting some ground-breaking tracks in music.

Fleetwood Mac first formed in London in 1967, They were
founded by guitarist Peter Green, drummer Mick
Fleetwood and guitarist Jeremy Spencer. Who were all
looking for a new feel and path to take in their music.
As the band lacked a bass guitarist, John McVie was
convinced by Green that he should join. In 1969, Danny
Kirwan joined as a third guitarist and by 1970,
Christine Perfect had joined the band and later married
John McVie.

Throughout this time, the band had quite a British
blues feel to the music with hits like Albatross and
Oh Well Quite different from the pop/rock feel we
associate them with today. This is how the original
members had intentionally pictured the band but with
the unexpected departure of guitarists Peter Green and

Jeremy Spencer and the adding and losing of guitarists
Bob Welch and Bob Weston the bands direction swerved a
little.

It wasnt until early 1975 when the band was introduced
to folk-rock duo Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks in
Los Angeles that the tides really turned for them and
an interesting, fresh new sound was brought to the
band.

Mac aspired to add Buckingham as their new lead
guitarist, who agreed under the condition that Nicks,
his singing partner and girlfriend at the time, also
would join.

This addition rocked the band and completely flipped
the style of their music from a melancholy British
Blues feel to a pop, soft rock arty explosion. With
Stevie Nicks, strange theatrical performing and
Buckinghams rock feel the band really changed and took
on a new form. Not only did Buckingham and Nicks write
songs, but they brought distinctive talents the band
had been lacking.

PRESENTER: The new Fleetwood Mac line up, released their debut
album together with the new members on the 11th July
1975. This album was their tenth studio album and was
called Fleetwood Mac this was a huge success and
would go on to sell over 5 million copies in the US
alone.

But, it was Rumours their next record that really

defined this eccentric line up and really brought them
to fame. However, this wasnt an easy road. During the
making of the album, tensions ran high with break ups
and heartache. The McVies divorced in 1976, they being
bass player John McVie and keyboardist/vocalist
Christine McVie. This shook the band as Buckingham and
Nicks broke up shortly afterward, this was after being
together for 8 years. The soul of Fleetwood Mac, Mick
Fleetwood was also going through a divorce at this
time.

This is the sort of pain and resentment that split and

break bands but, Mac put all that energy and emotion
into their songs. It was this focus and drive on just
the music that allowed them to release their feelings
and make a masterpiece.

Rumours was then released in the spring of 1977 and

was an instant success, rising straight to the top of
both British and American charts. Generating many top
ten singles including Go your own way, Dont stop,
You make loving fun and Dreams

Singles were written by the bands three writers in

their line-up, Lindsay Buckingham, Stevie Nicks and
Christine McVie. And the songs were almost letters to
each other about the pain they were going through
especially between Nicks and Buckingham who through
this emotion delivered tracks like Go your own way
from Buckingham and Dreams from Nicks.

Rumours would eventually sell over 17 million copies

and win best album of the year at the Grammys. It
would also become the second biggest-selling album of
all time.

The band went on to do a huge world tour to support the

album.
