History
Before talking about the channel, its important to talk about the history between South Korea
and the UK and the Hallyu Wave, and how these connect to the channels purpose.
Today, United Kingdom and South Korea are moving into a new era. In 2015, Britain has
exported 4.5 bn pounds of goods to South Korea. South Korea is one of the largest trading
country partner with the United Kingdom and its the third largest in Asia.[6] Many goods
labeled as Made in Britain attract more Korean customers, since its a foreign brand. Many
Korean customers like foreigners brands as it heighten their social status. Likewise, Britain also
has many South Korean brand that also are household names. From Samsung to Hyundai
products, you will not find a home without them.
Korean Englishman
As said before, Josh and Ollie also manage another Youtube channel called Korean Englishman.
This channel is similarly formatted to Jolly, but instead of talking about English culture, they
talk about Korean culture. In one of their most popular videos, Josh and Ollie are seen to attempt
to do the spicy noodles challenge, with intentions of describing their reaction to Korean culture
and Korean food.[11] On February 9, 2014, the challenge video was posted and within hours of
release. The video currently has over 8.4 million views.[11]

Birth of Jolly
According to Josh, the reason why him and Ollie continue to create videos about Korean and
English culture is that they just want to break down some boundaries.[7] To accomplish their
goal, Josh and Ollie create videos about English and Korean culture with both Korean and
English subtitles, in hope, to break down stereotypes South Korea and the United Kingdom
has of each other and find commonality between both cultures.[7] Ollie states, its going to be a
diplomatic mission, because they are making videos targeting both countries audience to
mediate the relationship between South Korea and the United Kingdom.[7]

Channel Content
As mentioned, the channel focuses on four aspects: Ollies Korean Lessons, English Food,
Korean Fusion Foods, and Ollies Personal Life. There are multiple episodes of each aspect
in each season.
English Food
On Season 4 Episode 17, Josh and Ollie presented a video on the national dish of the United
Kingdom. The guest for this episode was Gabie. The dish was Indian curry. Its said to have been
made by first and second Indian immigrants because they wanted to have their homeland food in the
United Kingdom, but found that locals are not fond of the spiciness. This lead to the Indian curry of
the UK, which is less milder than Indian curry.[16] In the video, Ollie states, So Korean pizza is
nothing like Western pizza. But it is very good in a Korean way. If you go in expecting proper
Western food like you get in London, you will get so disappointed. But if you embrace
that fact that its the Korean version,
its really good.[3]
All guests of the channel are friends of Josh and Ollie, except Gabie. Following, is a short
biography of each guest.
Joel - He studied abroad with Josh back in their college days. He knows how to speak Korean.
He likes spicy food. He used to live with Josh before Josh got married. Gabie - She is Joshs
