Dear University Club Members,
Not only was the Board impressed
On behalf of your Board of Direc-
tors, Im thrilled to announce Ms.
Marifrances Mimi Fahy as our
new General Manager. We ask
for your support as she settles in
and gets to know all of us and our
Club family.
Finding an individual to manage
our Club, following our previous
managers dedicated half-century
at the helm was no small
feat. Board members conducted
extensive interviews with many
impressive and qualified candi-
dates from across the state, all
eager to bring their talents to the
Club. Ms. Fahy stood out to the
Board as an individual with wide-
ranging experience, enthusiasm,
and warmth.
Ms. Fahy joins the Club family
after an impressive career in res-
taurant management and beverage
expertise, along with over 30
years of experience in an area so-
cial club. Most recently, Ms.
Fahy held the position of Wine
Advisor for a local restaurant
products company. Previously,
after managing the Londonderry
Caf, she purchased and operated
the popular local eatery. An in-
trepid restaurateur at a young age,
she taught herself all aspects of
the business even in the kitch-
en, becoming an accomplished
chef. Simultaneously, at the
Polish American Club, Ms. Fahy
gained three decades of experi-
ence in social club management,
including large banquets and
events.
Take a Moment to Say
with Ms. Fahys professionalism
and experience, but we were tak-
en by her desire to seize untapped
potential for the University
Club. As General Manager, Ms.
Fahy strives to preserve our tradi-
tions, all while exploring new op-
portunities to share the Club with
members and guests. Youll find
her to be an enthusiastic and posi-
tive ambassador for the Club in
our neighborhood and business
community.
Members, please visit in the
weeks ahead for a meal and bev-
erage, and introduce yourself to
Mimi. She is eager to learn from
us how she can best serve the
membership and enhance club
life.

Our organization is fortunate
to have a very generous and
talented staff.
The University Club has come
through several challenging
weeks thanks to the enormous
efforts and good will of our
amazing team of employees.
Please join me in contributing
to the the Employee Holiday
Fund as we show our gratitude
to those who quietly keep our
Club running on a daily basis
throughout the year.
You can do so by filling out a
pledge card (enclosed with this
months bill) and returning it
to the Club. Pledge cards are
also available at the front desk
of the Club.
This is the time for us to ex-
press our gratitude to those
who keep the Clubhouse clean
and comfortable, pay the bills,
keep the bowling alleys in
working order, prepare deli-
cious meals, and a whole host
of other vital unseen
tasks. These employees are not
part of the weekly service
charge distribution.

 Whats Important To You?
As members of the University Club,
whether we know it or not, we are
stewards of the historic, built envi-
ronment of our city and of civic and
civil discourse in the Capital Region.
Our National Historic Landmark-
registered Club has a long history of
being a welcoming destination to
members. In more recent times our
club has played host to a wide variety
of talks, lectures, performances, art
installations and meetings that would
otherwise not be possible, were our
Club not available to host.
These events have added to the desir-
ability of living and working in Alba-
ny and the region.
The simple truth is that in order for
our club to be a viable and reliable
destination for hospitality and the
exchange of ideas and discussion, we
need members who share those same
values and are willing to demonstrate
their commitment with their wallet to
support worthy institutions like ours.
The University Club Foundation has
also played a critical role in support-
ing the ongoing needs of our Club.
But it is dues-paying members that
allow the Club to thrive.
And as a member of the Club, you
have access to all the facilities
Dining Room, Grille Room, Bowling
alley (yes a functioning bowling al-
ley!), Living Room, Billiards Room
and overnight accommodations.
So as we welcome Mimi Fahy as our
new General Manager, let us also
take this opportunity to remind our
friends, relatives and colleagues who
care about civility and the historic,
built environment of Albany, that
now is the right time to become a

BAAD: Big, Allied and
Dangerous
On Tuesday evening, January 23,
two UAlbany professors will speak
about their terrorism database, Big,
Allied and Dangerous, or
BAAD. Karl Rethemeyer, Interim

Dean of Rockefeller College, and
political science associate professor
Victor Asal, will talk about their
work tracking hundreds of terrorist
groups, their alliances, and the nature
of those alliances.
Journalists, academics, and govern-
ments are interested in BAAD ear-
lier this year, Rethemeyer spoke to
South Koreas National Assembly
and intelligence agencies about how
North Korea might use terrorists.
Some of BAADs information is
sure to surprise you.

RAILROAD HISTORY
PROJECT

Mary Liz and Paul Stewart Speak on
their Educational and Historic
Preservation Work.
Paul & Mary Liz Stewart have been
exploring the history of the Under-
ground Railroad in Albany for the
past 25 years, and are co-founders of
the not-for-profit Underground Rail-
road History Project of the Capital
Region, Inc.
In 2003 the organization acquired the
Stephen & Harriet Myers residence
on Livingston Avenue, which was
the focal point of the Underground
Railroad in this area. The organiza-
tion is now working on restoration of
the home and presents a wide variety
of programs and activities including
youth programming and an annual
conference to provide information to
educators and researchers.

At this time of year individuals are
making plans for year-end charitable
contributions.
We are fortunate that years ago, The
University Club Foundation was
formed with the express purpose of
supporting the ongoing needs of our
historic club as a non-profit organiza-
tion. It is a recognized 501(c)(3) that
can accept donations in support of our
Club for year-end giving as well as
estate planning purposes.
Throughout the year The University
Club Foundation sponsors a variety of
community events, lectures and art
exhibits in our Club that are open to
the public. This cooperation has al-
lowed many people to enjoy the am-
biance of our beautiful, historic build-
ing over the years. With your tax-
