Computers or tablets
8 beach balls
Clear Tape
8. Procedures:
Day 1 10minutes: Ask students what they know and want to know about the solar system.
With the student responses, create a class chart to capture the information (tell students these
thoughts can be used in their essay for the end of this unit)
o Pass out student grading rubrics so that each student knows what they will be
graded on
5 minutes: Explain to the students that there are eight planets and today you will be
measuring the relative distance between them to get a visual and learn more about them.
5 minutes: Next divide the kids into groups of eight and give each of them a bouncy ball
(to be used as there planet). The newly formed group will be even depending on class
Day 2 30 minutes: Each group will be assigned a planet and will as a whole create a short

10 minutes: Each group will be given a toilet paper roll for measuring distance. The class
as a whole will adopt a distance to use per toilet paper squares. For example 20 toilet
paper squares will represent 1000 miles each so you would have 20,000 miles.
Day 3 45 minutes: In an open area such as a hallway have each group measure the
distance with the toilet paper squares representing the miles the class decided on. At the
end of each toilet paper trail the bouncy balls they were given at the beginning of class
will represent each groups planet; they should tape down the toilet paper trail. This
visual will allow the entire class to as a whole visualize the distance of the planets from
10 minutes: After this has been have all groups clean up any toilet paper and materials.
Day 4 40 minutes: Lastly have the entire class return to their seats and work individually
for this part of the project. Each student is to write a 3 paragraph essay about what they
learned from, Our Wonderful Solar System Unit. This day will allow time for each
student to start their rough draft of their essay. Allow each student to look at the class and
group posters from earlier to regather information and to jog their memory.
Day 5 40 minutes: Have students finish up their rough draft and peer check with each
