LESSON AIMS: - to identify the global meaning of a message


- to teach vocabulary associated with shopping
- to talk about shopping in a corner shop compared to a department
store

SKILLS: listening, speaking


METHODS: brainstorming, group work
MATERIALS: textbook, whiteboard, tape recorder, flipchart

POSSIBLE DRAWBACKS:
- Ss may find it difficult to understand the whole message of the text just
listening to it
- Ss may have some problems in understanding the new words
- Ss may find it difficult to contrast the two types of shops: corner shop,
department store

Time: 2 minutes
Introducing T announces the title of the lesson: When T Ss Speaking Whiteboard
of new shopping is a problem and writes it on the Ss - T
activity whiteboard
Time: 3 minutes T asks Ss to look at the images in the book (page
108) and say what the people in the image are
doing.
T asks Ss two questions: T Ss Speaking Textbook
Pre-listening 1. Do you enjoy shopping? Why/Why not? Ss T Flipchart
activities 2. What do you think a shopaholic is?
Time: 5 minutes Ss will answer them giving their own views.

T writes some sentences on the flipchart and Ss T - Ss


must guess if they are true or false.
eg: Everyone loves shopping

While-listening T asks Ss to listen to a person talking abut T-Ss Listening Tape recorder
Time: 7 min. Shopping Textbook
Ss can also follow the text in the book and
underline the new words while listening to it
Ss also have to think of a suitable heading for
each paragraph of the article

After-listening T writes the new words on the whiteboard and T-Ss Speaking Whiteboard
Time: 8 min. translates them or gives synonyms for them: Ss-T
tedious - boring, addiction dependenta

T asks Ss the following question: What pieces of


advice would you give a shopaholic?

T writes some types of shops on the whiteboard


and Ss have to say what one could find in these
shops. Ss also have to come up with some other
items that they can find in these shops.
Eg. fishmonger: cod
chemist: aspirin
newsagent: TV guides
Notebook
Group T will ask the Ss to divide into two groups: Ss - Ss Writing
Activity - one group will write in their notebooks
Time: 10 min. advantages of going shopping to a corner shop
and disadvantages of shopping in a department
store
advantages: - close to your house
- open long hours

disadvantages: - crowded
- noisy

- the other group will write in their notebooks

Acquiring T asks Ss to read in turn what they wrote in their Ss T Speaking

Time: 10 min. Group A will present the advantages of going
shopping to a corner shop and group B will
come up immediately with some disadvantages
of going shopping to a corner shop.

Group B will present the advantages of going


shopping to a department store and group B will
say some disadvantages of going shopping to a
department store. Ss - SS Speaking

Finally they will draw a conclusion expressing


their own views about shopping to a corner shop
and shopping to a department store
Assigning T tells Ss to write about going shopping alone vs. T - Ss Writing Textbook
Homework going shopping with one of their friends or with
