DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
FINALS QUIZ 2 Due: December 12, 2017 Fluid Mechanics

NAME: ______________________________________
SCHED: ________________

PROBLEM SOLVING (100 pts): Solve for the required values. Round-off only your final answers up to 4 DECIMAL PLACES. (Do not round-off values when solving).
SHOW COMPLETE SOLUTION. USE BLACK or BLUE Pens ONLY! Write your final answers on the box provided for. No erasures for the final answers.
1. Two pipes 1 and 2 are in series. If the roughness coefficients n 2 = 2n1 and the
diameter D1 = 500 mm, find the diameter D2 if the slope of their energy grade lines
are to be the same.
2. A pipe network consists of pipeline 1 from A to B, then at B it is connected to pipeline
2 and 3, where it merges again at joint C to form a single pipeline 4 up to point D.
Pipelines 1, 2 and 4 are in series connection whereas pipelines 2 and 3 are parallel to
each other. If the rate of flow from A to B is _______ liters/sec, and assuming that
f = 0.02 for all pipes, determine the flow in each pipe and the total head lost from A to
D.

Pipelines Length (m) Diameter (mm)

1 3000 200
2 2200 300
3 3200 200
4 2800 400

***NOTE: _USE THE LAST 2 DIGITS OF YOUR ID NUMBER FOR THE RATE OF FLOW, IF THE LAST 2 DIGITS
ARE BOTH ZERO, USE 10.
For example, if your ID number is 2157788, then the flow rate is 88 liters per second
If your ID number is 2157700, then the flow rate is 10 liters per second

3. Water is flowing at the rate of 300 liters/second from A to B as shown in the figure.
Compute the flow in each pipe in Liters/Sec and the total head loss. Assume f = 0.025
for all pipes.
