Title: Keeping You Safe: A Book about Police Officers

Author: Ann Owen

Summary of Book: This book is about the many ways police officers keep us safe.

Book Introduction/ Before the Read Aloud

Below are different ways to introduce your book to the students. Choose one or a combination of them for the book
you are reading.

1. Activating prior knowledge. For example, you may start with:

Does anyone know... or Do you remember the time
Has anybody heard of a ____? Tell me what you know about ____.

Do you know what are the duties of a police officer?

2. Plan a teaser of the text. For example, you may say:

In this story, we will learn about
Today we are going to read a book called What comes to your mind when you hear about the word?

Today Im going to read a book called, Keeping You Safe: A Book about Police Officers and we are going to find
out how police officers keep us safe and their duties.

3. Attend to the cover. For example, you may say:

What do we see on the cover? then followed by
What could this book be about?
*Encourage students to notice and use visual features to make predictions - plan a think aloud.
**Encourage predictions and model them by thinking aloud a prediction sentence. I predict that this book will be
about ___ because ____.

What picture do you see on the cover? By looking at this picture, what could this book be about? It is very
important to look at pictures because not only are they fun to see, but they also help us figure out what the book
could be about. So be sure to always look at the pictures on the cover and in the book. Before reading a book, you
should always try and make predictions of what the book will be about. So you could say, I predict the book will
be about ______ because______.

4. Set a goal for reading. For example you may say:

Lets find out if the ____ and if your guesses are right!
See if you notice .
Pay attention to
Lets find out if ____ and if your guesses are right. Pay attention to the job duties of officers and how they keep us
safe.

Write how you will you introduce your book here:

The book I will be reading is called, Keeping You Safe: A book about Police Officers and it is about how police officers
keep us safe and their job duties. Do you know what are the duties of a police officer? What picture do you see on
the cover? By looking at this picture, what could this book be about? It is very important to look at pictures
because not only are they fun to see, but they also help us figure out what the book could be about. So be sure to
always look at the pictures on the cover and in the book. Before reading a book, you should always try and make
predictions of what the book will be about. So you could say, I predict the book will be about ______
because______. Lets find out if ____ and if your guesses are right. Pay attention to the job duties of officers and
how they keep us safe.

During the Read Aloud

A. Vocabulary- Give the word you selected; provide the meaning; talk about how you will explain (through context,
through props, through examples, or through demonstration)

1. Community
Meaning of the word: A group of people of who live in the same area
How will you teach this word? What examples can you find from the book to help us understand what community
means? Have any of you heard of the word community?

2. Patrol Car
Meaning of the word: The type of car police officers drive
How will you teach this word? Lets look at this page. What do you all notice? Yes, an officer is driving and it says, or
drives a patrol car, so what could we say about a patrol car? Yes, its a car police officers drive.

3. Scene
Meaning of the word: A place where an incident occurred
How will you teach this word? What do you all think the word scene means? It says, A police officer speeds to the
scene and then it says and catches people who break laws. So it sounds like scene could mean a place right, but
what about the place? Remember it says and catches people who break laws so scene could be a place where what
happens? Yes, were crime or incident occurs.

B. Comprehension/schema building question(s): 5 comprehension questions, combined with response questions

Ideas for questions: 1. On the page where I will ask. 2. I will then ask why or why not or why do they think that. 3. I
will encourage the students to support their predictions, etc.

1. On the second page, I will refer to the picture and ask, What is going on in this picture? Why do you all think the
officer is talking to the children? Before answering, think about how and why you came up with your prediction.
Think about what you see in the picture that helped you make your prediction.

2. On pages 3,4,5 &6 what do you notice about the police officers? Can you tell me why do they think the police
officers are using different forms of transportation? Do you think a police officer has to only drive a patrol car? Why
or Why not. Be sure to include support for your prediction.

3. Lets look at pages 3, 6, and 9. What do all of these pages have in common? Yes, the children are talking to police
officers? So is it okay to talk to a police officer whenever you see one? How do you know? What support do you have
for your prediction?

4. On pages 10 and 11 what do you notice? Yes, there was an accident and the police officers are helping the people.
Would this be a good time to go up to a police officer and talk to them? Why not? Make sure to support your
prediction with evidence from the text?

5. On page 14 whats going on in the picture? Yes, the police officer is speeding trying to get to the scene. Are there
any other cars around the police officer? Why not? Where did the other drivers on the street go? Remember before
answering make sure to support your prediction.

After the Read Aloud (WRITING ABOUT READING)

Steps to guide you:
1. Focus on a specific genre/ example based on the Writing About Reading document by grade level. Keep in
mind the writing genre you select is most likely the same as the genre of your RA book. For example, if you
read aloud a fictional piece, then most likely you will have your CSS do narrative writing such as plot
summaries. If you read aloud nonfiction, your CSS will most likely will do informational writing such as listing
facts from a text. (See the Writing About Reading document by grade level in Activity 2 Part B in Module 13.
Since this is a nonfiction book, Im going to have you draw and write a brief description of at least three job
duties of a police officer, from the book.

2. Quickly show an example of that genre of writing by using a touchstone text or your own writing.
I will show an example of my drawing with brief description of job duties of a teacher.
3. Have your CSS write for about 10 minutes (this is not a long piece of writing).
CSS will write for about 10 min.
4. Referring again to the Writing About Reading document that matches the grade level of your CSS,
identify one area you would like to target AND TEACH from the THINKING WITHIN THE TEXT list.
I would like to target and teach my CSS how to reflect on both prior knowledge and evidence from the text in
responses to text. I can do this by revisiting my CSS predictions he made before reading the book as to what
he thinks police officer duties are and then making connections to the book.
Take a picture of your CSSs writing for later analysis and sharing.
I will take a picture to reflect on and share.

"Thank you for reading with me today. I like how you came up with great predictions and we were able to
find out what the duties of police officers are, how they keep us safe, their forms of transportation, and
when its a good time to talk to them.

Conclude by saying something like, "Thank you for reading with me today. I like how you and how we. I will be
back next week with

1. Read clearly and with expression! Pause to interact at appropriate spots (predictions, connections). Mark spots
with sticky notes.
2. Please bring this lesson plan with you to work with students. Underline key terms and jot down extra notes for
yourself. You do not need to have this memorized but use this as a guide for the read aloud.
