Service Learning Summary
I served as a volunteer assistant coach for a local youth soccer team. The team is called
JUFC which stands for Juventus United Futbol Club. I served for head coach Gennette Martinez
and her assistant coach Cesar Martinez. My duties as the volunteer coach were fairly simple, but
I do feel that I helped both the coaches and players during my ten hours. I had to arrive about
fifteen minutes before practice started. I helped coach Martinez set up her field with numerous
cones, and I helped coach Cesar put nets on each of the two goals.
During practice, I helped keep the players in line by checking their behavior and making
sure their focus was put onto coach Gennette when she was speaking. I was also, due to my
sixteen years of playing experience, able to help coach Martinez come up with drills to help her
players learn a skill she wanted to teach. When it came to practice, coach Cesar and I always
demonstrated the new drills to the players so that they could see how to do it correctly. Coach
Martinez loves to teach her players visually instead of just talking out the drill. Another duty I
had was to check on each player if they were injured to make sure they were okay. Luckily no
I feel I learned a lot during my ten-hour service learning assignment. Coach Martinez
showed excellent classroom management by keeping her players on task during every practice.
I feel that will prepare me for my future classroom setting. I also got to feel the responsibility of
being in charge of other parents children, which a teacher feels every day. The best thing I may
have learned from my hours is probably how to interact with kids. I am passionate about soccer,
and being able to pass that passion on to the players was such a great feeling. Hopefully I will be
able to pass the passion I have for my subject to my students when I am a teacher.
