Lesson Plan for Beginning Trombone

Goal: Produce first sound on trombone
Objectives:
1. After a brief explanation of trombone assembly student will assemble their trombone.
2. After a few short lessons student will demonstrate their knowledge of slide positions and
embouchure by performing Jingle Bells.
Materials:
1. Two trombones (one for the teacher, one for the student)
2. Trombone sheet music (Jingle Bells)
3. Trombone fingering chart
4. Piano
Prior Knowledge: Student has basic understanding of rhythm. Student has basic aural skills.
Student can read music in bass clef.
New Vocabulary: slide, bell, slide positions, mouthpiece, buzzing,

Process: (about 25 minutes)


Buzzing / Embouchure (5 minutes)
1. Teacher grabs mouthpiece and instructs student to grab theirs too.
2. Teacher explains how to place mouthpiece on lips to produce sound (say the letter M,
place mouthpiece on the center of the mouth, buzzing)
3. Student practices buzzing with and without teacher.
4. Teacher and student place mouthpieces down.
Assembling the instrument (5 minutes)
5. Teacher grabs slide and instructs student to grab theirs too. During this teacher explains
how to hold and place slide on ground when assembling the trombone.
6. Teacher and student grabs bell and teacher explains how to put it on slide. (make L shape,
bell on left side)
7. Teacher and student put mouthpiece on trombone.
Playing Bb and F (5 minutes)
8. Teacher plays Bb
9. Student plays Bb
10. Teacher plays F
11. Student plays F
12. Teacher and student plays four Bb and four F Quarter notes.
13. Student plays four Bb and four F Quarter notes.
Slide positions (2 minutes)
14. Teacher and student go through the seven slide positions.
15. Student does the slide positions in order and out of order.
Jingle Bells (8 minutes)
16. Teacher and student work through Jingle Bells slide positions.
17. Teacher and student sing Jingle Bells with slide positions.
18. Student sings Jingle Bells with slide positions.
19. Teacher and student play Jingle Bells.
20. Student plays Jingle Bells.
21. Student plays Jingle Bells with piano accompaniment.
