playing the title role in The Mummy (2017) opposite Tom
Cruise. Most recently, she burned up the screens in Atomic
Blonde (2017) alongside Charlize Theron. Theres something
about the Algerian bombshell her unique features, striking
physique and exotic accent is
now drawing all eyes on her,
even after initially not being
able to find her niche. Casting

Sofia, you seem to be making one big
Hollywood movie after another. How working with.
does it feel?
Its pretty phenomenal and it feels like
I havent stopped working over the past two years. It s exciting for me to suddenly
be on a set with some of the top people in the business and find myself doing
scenes with people I once dreamed about working with as a teenager.
How was it playing opposite Charlize Theron?
It was mind-blowing to work with her. She made things very comfortable for me
especially in those intimate scenes and it wasnt that hard to work with someone
whos so gorgeous. She is such a great actress and I really appreciated being
able to have the chance to work with a woman who has accomplished so much
and is both a very strong and generous woman.
In Atomic Blonde , you and Charlize share some very torrid scenes
together. What was it like doing that very intense scene? Was it awkward
at all for any of you?
I was very nervous at first and it took me a bit of time to get comfortable. But
Charlize was so cool about it that I was able to relax pretty quickly and just be in
the moment. You crack a few silly jokes to loosen the tension but you also need
to pay attention to a lot of the technical aspects of shooting a scene like that
which is not sexy at all.

How does it compare to your experience on
The Mummy ?
The biggest difference is not having to spend four hours
in makeup every morning to become that character. It
was a pretty intense process but it also added so much
depth and feeling to the way you become this monster.
You needed to have all that makeup and clothing to get
you into that kind of a character. The worst part was when
I had to be buried in the coffin. It was not the greatest
experience while they were wrapping me and I couldnt
move or speak it was frightening.
Is it odd to play a monster, especially since you
havent had that many acting roles before?
One of the main reasons I wanted to do the film was
because they made the Mummy a woman. That was a
first and even though it scared me at times to transform
into that kind of personality it was also what appealed to me
about her. I think its important to explore why a woman like this
becomes a monster and understand the terrible f**ked-up things Alongside Charlize

that turn some people into monsters. Shes a metaphor for what can
happen when people suffer through very bad things we all have sides
of us that are ugly and monstrous. That was why having a lot of backstory
to her was important to explain what happened to her that she turned into

You grew up in Algeria before your family moved to Paris while
the Algerian Civil War was raging. What was it like adapting to DID YOU

It was difficult at first but then I grew to love French culture and start to get
involved in gymnastics and dance. I loved expressing myself through that

little crazy and

How difficult was it to make the switch to acting after ten years as
a professional dancer?
I studied acting for six years and during that time I was also going on many
auditions and getting rejected a lot. That s part of what you have to go through
but I didnt allow myself to get discouraged... Acting was always enticing me.

to-earth woman. Shes taught me so much about the world, about myself. Shes
shaped a lot of who I am today.
Did Madonna help you in terms of your desire to break into acting?
She knew I wanted to go into acting, and always encouraged that. She
personally introduced me to Marion Cotillard she really cares like that. A lot
of my success in acting so far is down to learning and working with Madonna.
She wanted us dancers to create a story with our movements and really believe
