Problem 2: 20 points
The beam shown in Figure (1) is to support a total factored load of 6.2 t/m (own weight is included).
Knowing that the beam width, b = 30 cm and its height, h = 90 cm, do the following:
(1) Check flexural design of the cross-section at maximum positive moment.
(2) Design a square tied column to support the loads coming from 5 stories, at one of the two
supports (neglect own weight of column and using 16 mm bars).
Provided Data:
- Use f 'c 240 kg / cm 2 .
- Use f y 4200 kg / cm 2 .
- Design is to be according to ACI 318-14.

Solution (Column):
1- The factored load Pu 37.2 5 186 tons . (2 points)

2- The reinforcement ratio g is assumed to be equal to 1%.

3- Determine the gross sectional area Ag of the concrete section:

Pu 0.52 Ag 0.85 f 'c g f y 0.85 f 'c
186,000 0.52 Ag 0.85 240 0.01 4200 0.85 240 (1 points)
Ag 1466.19 cm 2
4- Choose the dimensions of the cross section based on its shape:

Section dimension = b h 1466.19 38.29 cm , taken as 40 cm. (1 point)

5- Calculate the needed area of longitudinal reinforcement ratio:
As g Ag = 0.01 (1466.16) = 14.66 cm2 (1 point)
6- From reinforcement tables, choose the number and diameters of needed reinforcement:
Try 8 16 mm A 16.08 cm

7- Check clear spacing between bars:

40 2 4 2 0.80 3 1.60
S clear 12.8 cm 1.5 1.60 cm 4.0 cm (1 point)

8- Design the needed ties: (2 points)
The spacing between ties is not to exceed the smallest of
16 (1.6) = 25.60 cm
48 (0.80) = 38.40 cm
40 cm
Use ties 8 mm spaced @ 25 cm (one set, since clear spacing between bars is less than 15.0 cm).

9- The designed cross section together with needed longitudinal and lateral reinforcement is shown
in the figure below. (1 point)
