Cutie Lewie

in the
Jungle

By: Simmi Kaur

How do acids and bases affect our daily
life?

Cutie Lewie grew up in the jungle with his acid and base
friends Lily Lemon, Dannie Dandelion, and Charlie Coco.
Lily and Lewie are an acid because they donate protons
(a.k.a Lowry-Bronsted definition) or accept lone pairs of
electrons (a.k.a Lewis Definition), and also when shes
added to water then she increases the concentration of
H+(a.k.a Arrhenius Definition). Because theyre acids,
they have sour personalities. Charlie and Dannie are
bases because they accepts protons, donate lone pair of
electrons, and a substance that when added to water
increases the concentration of OH- ions present. They
both are more on the bitter side, and they are also
slippery.
Lewie and his friends were racing through
the forest and the litmus leaves were
changing colors as they flew by. Anything
that Lewie and Lily touched would turn red
because theyre acids based on their pH
which is below 7 and anything that Charlie
touched would turn blue because hes
a base since his pH is above 7.
As they raced along, they found a swamp
and decided to jump in for a swim. Lily is a
strong acid and Charlie is a strong base, so
when they jumped in the swamp, they
completely ionized and disappeared under
the water. Lewie is a weak acid and
Dannie is a weak base which made it so
they made it through the dreadful swamp
without completely ionizing.
With their friends gone, Lewie and Dannie
go on to find more acids. As they went
along they ran into a strong acid friend,
HCl, and a strong base friend NaOH. As
they visited, Lewie and Dannie got into an
argument about whether acids or bases
were better, and they started to fight.
Neither could win because they neutralized
each other.
Then they sat down and resolved their conflict
by talking about why acids and bases are both
good. Lewie talked about how themselves,
acids and bases affect the way their food
friends taste. He talked about how he himself
usually makes their friends sour. Dannie agreed
and noted how bases like himself makes their
friends bitter.
They accepted that theyre also both useful
around the house, such as when Lewies acid
pals are in cleaning solutions and Dannies
base buddies are in toothpaste. They decided
that they work really well together to form
buffers, like our blood that enables us to live.
They came to an agreement that both acids and
bases are very important and went home after
an eventful day.
THE END!
