GOLD COAST

SQUADRON
TERM 4, 2017
NEWSLETTER

OCs REPORT
Welcome to the final newsletter for 2017, hard to believe that another year has
concluded it seems to have just raced by.
Presentation evening for 2017 was again well attended by parents, friends and invited
guests. This is a good indication of the strong support that exists for the program and
activities being offered to cadets.
A huge thank you to our distinguished guests who attended our awards night and
presented the various awards;
-Mr. Mark Boothman, State Member for Theodore;
-Mr Michael Powell, Secretary Nerang RSL Sub-branch;
-Mr Peter Nicol, Commissionaire, Corps of Commissionaires;
-Ms Helen Pullin, Commissionaire, Corps of Commissionaires;
-Warren and Shirley Rhone, RAAF Association;
-Lieutenant Commissioner Todd Oakley, (GEXC AAL Qld);
-Group Lieutenant Aaron Loeken, Air Activities Officer AAL Qld.
Support from these community and organisation leaders significantly adds to the
significance of the awards night and we are grateful for them taking time out of their
busy schedules to attend and participate in the presentations. (Details of award winners
are shown separately in the newsletter).
Ms Helen Pullin from Corps of Commissionaires who was attending our parade night for
the first time offered very favourable comments on the conduct and appearance of our
cadets. An invitation to provide a Flag Party for a Remembrance Day service at St
Peters church in Southport also provided a unique experience for our cadets and a host

of congratulations was received from many of the congregation members. These
positive comments make me very proud to be associated with such a fine group of
young boys and girls.
Seven members of the squadron attended the NCO training camp in October and
embraced a weekend of drill training, education and leadership principles. I look
forward to being able to consider some promotions from this group in 2018.
This term we welcome new members, Thomas Boyd, Marshall Jaket and Bradley
Bremner into the cadet ranks. While we strive to expand our numbers, the squadron
officers still strive to maintain a strong sense of family within the squadron. As is the
case with most families, a feeling of sadness occurs when members have to move on.
At the end of this term we are farewelling four of our cadets for a variety of reasons.
The squadron is also losing two of its longstanding officers who have had to move on
due to pressure of work commitments and career objectives. We wish all the departees
every success with their moves and hope that we can catch up some time in the future.
We will continue to explore a variety of activities that will maintain cadets interest and
complement the aviation based theme of our organisation.
I have had preliminary discussions with Peter Long, General Manager of Air Gold Coast
with a view to organising another Trial Instruction Flight for cadets during Term1 or 2.
Prospect of a Squadron/Wing camp is also being considered. With Group Review in
early May 2018, practice in drill and preparation for more entries in individual
competitions will also be a major part of our program for Terms 1 and 2.
We finished the 2017 year off with a fun activity at the Parkwood Mini Golf which was
enjoyed by cadets and officers who tried hard to master the challenging course. A
sample of photos from the day can be viewed on the squadron facebook page or our
squadron website.
I want to thank all the officers, branch committee members and parents who have
generously volunteered their time to contribute to the squadrons operations in 2017.
I wish all cadets, officers and their families a safe and Merry Christmas and look
forward to seeing you all again in 2018 refreshed and enthusiastic and ready to meet
the challenges ahead.
