Safety first
Did you know that every year in the UK around 4000 people die in accidents in their own homes? Almost half of
these deaths are caused by falls. People should make sure that the stairs are well lit and that theyre always kept
clear of objects. Another 2 to 7 million people are taken to hospital for burns, sprains, cuts and other injuries that
happen at home. A lot of these accidents involve children and 477,500 involve children under five years of age.
These numbers are very high and there are several simple ways to avoid many common accidents.
Make sure heavy items are not kept on high shelves. Keep knives sharp, but make sure children cannot reach
them. Keep medicine bottles and chemicals on high shelves as well, so that children cant reach them. Wear
protective clothing when doing DIY.
