Basket Weaving

Objectives:
Learn about baskets from various cultures.
Learn the different stitches used in coil basket making.
Develop designs for a 3-Dimensional form that is at least 4 inches tall and 3 inches wide. If
going wide it must be at least 6 inches wide and 2 inches tall.

Materials:
Cording or plastic bag scissors
yarn or natural grasses masking tape
tapestry needle

Directions:
1. Get a 2-foot piece of coil, tape it and then cut end on a diagonal..

2. Select color of yarn and cut a 2-3 foot piece.

3. Lay yarn along length of coil starting from the diagonally cut end.

4. Start about an inch from the end by wrapping yarn around the coil. Stop wrapping at the diagonal
cut. Wrap tightly around the coil.
5. Continue wrapping and wrap over the end of the cord, covering up the cut end, and about 1/2
inch along the leading end of the cord.

6. Thread the other end of the yarn thru the tapestry needle.
7. Curl the wrapped coil onto itself.

8. "Anchor" by passing your needle through the coil. The loop is the previous coil.

9. Continue to wrap 3-4 times then anchor, repeat for a few coils. Switch to 5 times then anchor
again. Repeat
10. When ending a color, pull color thru a few wrapped strands and cut off. (option #1)

10 b. (Option #2): When changing colors (must use at least 3 different colors) overlap the new
color with the coil (just like at the beginning), then wrap around itself.

11. To end, tape and cut the end on a diagonal (slop side up). Anchor the end so the cord is
completely hidden. Angle the needed back towards the wrapping and tuck yarn under
wrapped coil and cut.
Challenge Yourself:
Create a non-traditional basket
Think LINEAR (long lines instead of solid
mass).
Have it be ORGANIC (think ameba
shapes).

Embellishments:
-- Thread embellishment item onto the yarn, continue to wrap around coil and anchor.
