Gadadharam aham vande madhavacarya nandanam


mahabhava svarupa sri caitanyabhinna rupinam

I offer my salutations (I adore) Sri Gadadhara, the son of Madhavcarya.


He is the very form of mahabhava, non-different from Sri Caitanya
Himself.

pranam:
Gandharvika svarupaya gauranga premasampade
gadadharaya me nityam namostu hi krpalave

I perpetually offer my obeisances to the merciful Gadadhara, none other


than Gandharvika, the wealth of Gaurangas love.

dhyana:
Karunyaikamaravrnda padmacaranam caitanya candra dyutim
tambularpana bhangi daksinakaram svetambaram sundaram
premanandatanum sudhasmitamukham sri gauracandreksanam
dhyayecchrila gadadharam dvijabaram madhuryabhusojjalam

One should meditate on Srila Gadadhara, the best of the dvijas. His lotus
feet are fragrant with the unique aroma of mercy. He is the cooling light
of Caitanyas moon. He folds his right arm in the gesture of offering
tambula (pan). He wears white clothes. He is the best amongst the
devotees. His body is made of premananda. His face carries a nectarean
smile, while he glances at Lord Gauracandra. He is the brilliance of the
jewel of madhurya.

SriGadadharastakam:
sabhaktiyoga lasinam sada vraje viharinam
hari priya ganagragam sacisuta priyesvaram
saradha krsna sevanam prakasakam mahasayam
bhajamyaham gadadharam supanditam gurum prabhum (1)

I worship Sri Gadadhara, the best of the pandits, who is teacher and
master. Continually sporting in the land of Vraja he is radiant with the
lustre of his own devotion (bhakti-yoga). He is the chief among those
(gopis) dear to Lord Hari. His dear Lord is Saci-suta. Service to Lord Krsna,
in the company of Sri Radha, is manifested by him. He is called
mahasaya, one whose inner goal is great.

I worship Sri Gadadhara, the best of the pandits, who is teacher and
master. He is expert in the activites favourable to the flow of the various
rasas beginning with the ujjvala rasa (madhurya). Sporting in the of
ocean of devotion to Gaura, he exhibits such eager curiosity through a
myriad of dextrous poses while engaged in his divine dance. He shows
the excellent path of raga (anuga), thus confering the capacity to reside
in Vraja.

I worship Sri Gadadhara, the best of the pandits, who is teacher and
master. His greatness is worshipped even by the most intimate servants
(devotees) of Sri Sacisutas lotus feet. In his lotus heart, immersed in
gaura-bhava, his dearmost Dark Beloved dwells. He bestows the quality
of his inner nature (that of Sri Radha) upon Mukunda, Who has accepted
the form of Gaura.

I worship Sri Gadadhara, the best of the pandits, who is teacher and
master. He is the instrument for the performance of esoteric services in
the nikunjas; He eternally pacifies the rati (attachment) of the sakhis; he
is maha rasa incarnated. He provides the shelter of his lotus feet to the
devotees, being the perfect sat- guru.

mahaprabho vrajanganadi bhava moda karakam
bhajamyaham gadadharam supanditam gurum prabhum (5)

I worship Sri Gadadhara, the best of the pandits, who is teacher and
master. He is the dearmost of Mahaprabhu in that he is the blossom that
manifests Mahaprabhus maha rasa. His constant and inborn desire is to
produce other buds that will also blossom into this maha-rasa. He arouses
the bliss of the sentiments of the Vraja gopis in the most pleasing ways.

I worship Sri Gadadhara, the best of the pandits, who is teacher and
master. He increases bhakti in those lotus feet of the Object of prayer of
the best dvijas. He favours his confidential associates by disclosing his
inner nature as Radha. He gives the nectar of ujjvala rasa by teaching
from the unlimited bhakti-sastras.

I worship Sri Gadadhara, the best of the pandits, who is teacher and
master. Immersed in his own ecstasy, he is the bestower of the life of
devotion to his worshipable Gaura, who is an ocean of the spirituous
ambrosia of maha-rasa and whose lotus feet are his only possession,
dearer to Gadadhar than his most dear object. He is always experiencing
the eight sattvika bhavas. He bestows bhakti to his own ista (devata).

Though in the body of a male, since my mind has become besmeared


with deep attachment to the path of raga, while relishing the delectable
taste of (the Lords) amourous pastimes, I find that I have become
entirely possessed of the mood and sentiments of a female (asroy-
vigraha / the predominated moiety). In this condition I can only hope that
the intoxicated bumblebee of my mind will receive shelter within the
heart of he who is totally immersed in the Ujjvala-rasa (erotic sentiment).

He who reads regularly with devotion this Gadahara-astakam, the delight


of the vraja-gopis, the bestower of the nectar of maha rasa, shall achieve
the ability to serve the lotus feet of Sri Sacitanuja, through the service of
Gadadharas (Radhikas ) lotus feet.

PremVivarta(ofJagadanandaPandit):
Oneday,Prabhu,whileengagedinhisdivineplay,secretlystoleintoadeepforest,
takingmyselfandGadadharwithhim.There,Suka(theparrotcompanionofSriKrsna)was
happilysingingasong,sittinginaBakultree.PrabhuaddressedSuka,Youarethesonof
Vyasa!PleasebesokindastoincreaseourecstasybysingingsomethingofthegloriesofSri
SriRadhaKrsna.
Theparrotreplied,GauraHari!
WhileexpressingfeignedangerPrabhutoldSukatoflyaway.ButSukacontinuedtochant
Gaura!Gaura!whiledancinginjubilation,asthedawnofKrsnapremfilledtheskywith
itsbrilliantcolours.
Prabhusaid,OreSuka!ThisisBrindaban.ChantRadhaKrsna,sothateveryonemayhear!
Sukareplied,BrindabanhasbecomeNavadwip,andRadhaKrsnahavenowacceptedthe
formofGauraHari.IamSukaandinthisforestIsingthenamesofGaura.YouaremyKrsna
andRadhaishereasGadai.(Thus)GadaiGaurangaaretheLordsofmylife.Icantsay
anythingmorethanthis.
Prabhuanswered,IamtheworshiperofRadhaKrsna.IfIhearanynamesotherthanTheirs,
itonlybringsmesorrow(soka).
SosayingGauraHaritookthehandofGadaiandreturnedtoMayapur,leavingSukabehind.

SriGadadharwastheconstantcompanionofMahaprabhufromthetimeoftheirchildhood.
Themostconsistentopinionregardinghisbirthplaceisthathewasborninthevillage,
Belitigram,withintheDistrictofCattigram,inthepresentcountryofBangladesh.Another
opinionisthathisfamilyhailedfromBaliati,withinDhakadistrict(alsoBangladesh).His
father'snamewasSriMadhavMisraandhismother'snameSriRatnavatidevi.
SriMadhavMisrawasapanditinthecourtoftheKingofKandi,MaharajSurasena.Itisthe
opinionofsomethatthiskingbroughtGadadharfromBelitigramtoBharatpur(nearKandi).
InanycaseBharatpuristheSripatofSriPanditGosvamiandhisnephewanddisciple,Sri
NayananandaThakur.TheworshipofaBhagavadGita,writteninGadadhar'sownhand,and
aDeityofSriMeyoKrsna,wornbyGadadhararoundhisneck,iscarefullypreservedhereby
thedescendantsofNayananandaThakur.

InNabadwipthefamilyofGadadharlivedverynearthehouseofSriJagannathMisrain
Mayapur.RatnavatidevithoughtofSacideviasherownsister,andalwaysusedtovisither.

Duringtheirchildhood,SriGauraHariandGadadharwouldplaytogether,sometimesat
Mahaprabhu'shouseandsometimesatGadadhar'shouse.Theybothstudiedtogetheratthe
sameschool.Gadadharhowever,wasafewyearsyoungerthanNimai.Nimaicouldn't
remainwithoutGadadharevenforamomentandGadadharaswellcouldnotbeartobe
separatedfromNimai.

IntheGaurganoddesadipika,itisdescribed:
"ThatpersonwhoinVrajawasthedaughterofSriVrishbhanuRaja,namelySrimati
Radharani,isnowcelebratedasSriGadadharPandit.
WhowaspreviouslythemostdearLaxmiofSyamsundor(SyamsundorVallabha),isnowSri
GadadharPandit,thewealthofloveofGauracandra.SheWhowastheembodimentoflove,
theQueenofVrindaban,SriRadha,hasnowbecomethemostbelovedofSriGauranga
(GaurVallabha),SriGadadharPandit.SriSwarupDamodarhasdescribedhimasthe
LaksmiofVraja.SrimatiLalitaDevihasbecomefamousasAnuradha,themostdevoted
followerofSrimatiRadhika.ConsequentlyLalitahasalsoenteredintothebodyofGadadhar
Pandit.
[ThishasbeendescribedinthethirdactofCaitanyaCandrodoyNatak,fiftyfirstverse,"This
GodoftheEarthSriGadadhar,appearsjustlikethedearestsakhiofSriRadha,Lalitadevi."]
ThisisacceptedasareasonableopinionsinceDhruvanandaBrahmacari(oneoftheprincipal
disciplesofGadadhar)isalsosaidtobetheselfsameformofLalita."

Saubhagyamanjari/ManjarisvarupofGadadhar(Dhruvananda?)

[Itissomewhatdifficulttounderstandhowonepersoncanbemorethanoneperson.Thisis
explainedbytheconceptofavesh.Somedictionarymeaningsofthewordaveshare:
obsessed,possessed,etc.Itmaybesaidofsomeonethat,bhutaveshhoyeche,theyare
possessedbyaghost.SoithappensthatLordCaitanyaandhisassociatesbecomeobsessed
withdifferentmoods,orthatthemoodsandsentimentsofdifferentpersonalitiestake
possessionoftheirbeing.
SriGaursundorisKrsna,butinthemoodofRadharani.Therefore,Gadadhar,thoughheis
Radharani,istheaveshofAnuRadha(Lalita).Thatis,themoodandsentimentsofLalita,in
consolingandofferingadvicetoSrimatiRadhika,takepossessionofGadadharsothathecan
helptheLordrelishecstaticmellows;relishthepositionofSriRadha,theselfsameposition
ofGadadhar.WhoismorequalifiedtoassistSriKrsnainrelishingthemoodandsentiments
ofSriRadha,thanRadhaherself;yetshedoessoasLalita.JustastheName,Form,Qualities
andPastimesofSriKrsnaarenondifferentfromHimself,similarlythemoodandsentiments
ofSriLalitadeviarealsonondifferentfromherveryself,soitshouldbeunderstoodthat
Gadadharis,(attimes),Lalita.]

SometimesitissaidthatweshouldnotdisturbLordCaitanyainhismoodofrelishingthe
positionofSriRadha.ThisisacriticismusedagainstthefollowersofSriNarahariSorkar
Thakur,whoworshipLordCaitanyaasGauranganagororNavadwipnagor(thegallantof
Navadwip).ItshouldberememberedhoweverthatSriGaursundoristheSupreme
IndependentPersonalityofGodhead.Hecan,accordingtohisownsweetwill,relishan
unlimitedvarietyofrasas,ordivinesentiments.Thoughhehascometorelishthepositionof
SriRadha,sometimesinfact,hebecomesabsorbedinhisidentityasKrsna.Thenhetakes
Gadadharbythehandandtheygoandsitatthebaseofatreewithinafragrantforest.

WithinHeisblackishbutofagoldenhuewithout,thedirectmanifestationoftheDivine
Couple."

Whoseworshiphehasbeencompletelysubjugated.Hepraysthathewilldesiretoserve
thembirthafterbirth."

"TheecstaticemotionsandexpressionsofPanditGadadhararenotpossibletodescribe.
AnothernameofLordGaurangaistheLordofthelifeofGadadhar.Whocanunderstand
whatmercytheLordhasbestoweduponGadadhar?Hisgloriesaresungbyeveryoneasthe

InSriCaitanyaCarit,secondcanto,itisdescribed:
gadadharomahaprajnobrahmanahsatkulodbhavah...
SriGadadharPrabhu,whowasborninarespectablebrahmanfamily,themost
intelligentscholar(mahapandit),andadevoteeimbuedwithKrsnaprem,continually
remainedwithSrimanMahaprabhu.

Onenight,astheywerelyinginbedtogether,MahaprabhusaidtoGadadhar,Inthe
morningyoushoulddistributethesegarlandstothedevotees.
Then,thenextmorning,afterdistributingthosegarlandstothedevotees,everyonewentto
takebathintheGanga.Havingcompletedtheirbaths,theyallreturnedtotheirrespective
residencestoworshiptheiristadevataandmakeanofferingoffoodstuffs.Thereafter,their
heartsfullwithjoy,theyallreturnedtothelotusfeetofSriGaursundor.
Eachmorning,GadadharwouldsmeartheLordsbodywithsandalwoodpasteandplace
flowergarlandsaroundhisneck.IntheSayanmandir(bedroom),aftercarefullyarranging
theLordsbed,Gadadharwouldhimselfdriftofftosleepwhilelisteningtothenectarean
speechofGaurahari.

IntheSriCaitanyaCaritMahakavya:
satugadadharapanditahsattamahsatatamasya...
Thebestofthebhagavatas,SrimadGadadharaPrabhu,alwaysremainednear
Mahaprabhu,thathemight,withgreateagerness,servehisdearmostworshipableobject,
moredeartohimthanhisownlife.Atnighthewouldsleepinthesameroomas
Mahaprabhbu,hismindfilledwitheagernessandsolicitude.Theywanderedabouttogether,
playedtogetherandalsotooktheirmealstogether.
GadadharwasdeeplyattachedtoSriKrsnaevenfromhischildhood.Hewasalwaysfondof
solitudeandwasthepictureofpatience,serenityandrenunciation.
DuringtheLordspleasurepastimesofscholarship,Gadadharaccompaniedhiminrelishing
themellowsoflearningandwasalwaysreadytoservehim.
InthetimeofHisprecociousyouth,NimaiPandit,wouldaskhisfellowstudents
meaningless,fallaciousquestionsinlogic.Gadadharsnaturewassuchthatheconsidered
thisalltobemostlyawasteoftime.ButNimaiwouldn'tallowhimtogetaway.Hewould
tellhim,"Gadadhar!InaveryshorttimeI'llbecomesuchaVaisnavathatLordBrahmaand
LordSivathemselveswillcometoMydoor."

DuringthetimewhenSriIsvarPuriwaspresentforafewmonthsinNabadwipatthehouse
ofSriGopinathAcarya,heaffectionatelytaughtGadadharfromthebookhehadcomposed,
SriKrsnaLilamrta.

OnedaywhiletheLordofVaikunthawasabsorbedinHispastimesofscholarshipHe
happenedtomeetGadadhar.CatchingholdofGadadharstwohands,Prabhusmiledand
inquiredfromhim,"Youareastudentoflogic,sopleaseimpartsomeofyourknowledgeto
Me."
Gadadharreplied,"Askme."(whateveryouplease)
Prabhurequested,"Tellmewhatthesymptomsofmukti(liberation)are?"
Gadadharquotedfromnyayasastra,"trividhaduhkhatyantanivrttiratyantapurusarthah,
[sankhyapravacansutra,1stcanto,1stsutra],
Accordingtosastra,thefirstsymptomofthemanifestationofmuktiistheeliminationofall
kindsofsuffering."
TheLordofSarasvatidevi,thesattvatasastravigraha(personificationofthescripturesin
themodeofgoodness),pointedoutthefaultsandutterworthlessnessofconclusionsbasedon
materiallearningbyquotingfromSriMadhvacaryapadsvaisnavasiddhanta,moksam
visnvanghrilabham.Presentingthisconclusionheestablishedthetemporalityofsuffering
andenjoymentingrossandsubtlesituationswhicharealsotemporary.Theeternal
predilectionandactualform(svarup)orintrinsicquality(dharma)ofthesoulisindevotion
toKrsna(krsnabhakti).Thisconstitutesrealliberation.
BythemercyofMahaprabhu,Gadadharandtheotherdevotees,thoughtheyweredefeatedin
argument,wereeagertoservetheLordinestablishingthehealthyandproperconclusionsof
alllearning.
Prabhutoldhim,"Gadadhar!Todayyoumaygohome.TomorrowyoucancomewhenIlet
youknow."
SoGadadharwenthomeafterfirstofferinghisnamaskars.

SriCaitanyaMahaprabhu,upongoingtoGayaDham,firstbegantomanifestsymptomsof
Krsnaprema.ThereHeenactedthepastimeofacceptingtheshelterofSriIsvarPuriandafter
returningtoHishouseHenowbegantoleadanewlife.DayandnightHeremainedtotally
immersedintheoceanofloveofKrsna.Uponseeingthisunprecedentedshoweroftearsof
loveforKrsna,Gadadharalsobegantocryinecstaticlove.FromthistimeGadadharPandit
wasalwaysatMahaprabhu'sside.

InthecourtyardofSrivasThakurwasoneKundaflowertreewhichwasasthoughakalpa
vriksatree.NomatterhowmanyVaisnavascamethereinthemorningtopickflowers,they
couldn'texhausttheseeminglyunlimitedsupplyofflowerswhichthistreeprovided.
Onemorning,whileGadadhar,Gopinath,RamaiandSrivasThakurwerepickingflowers,
SrimanPanditarrivedtheresmilingradiantly.Whentheyaskedhimthecauseofhisgreat
happinesshenarratedtothemsomeincidentsconcerningtheecstatictransformationswhich
hadcometopossessNimaiPandit,afterHisreturnfromGaya.TheVaisnavaswerevery
enlivenedtohearthisnewsandthusfilledtheskywiththevibrationsof"Hari!Hari!"
SrimanPanditthenwentontoinformthemthatwhenPrabhuhadregainedHisexternal
consciousnessHerequestedthatthefollowingdayalltheVaisnavaswouldmeettogetherat
Suklambar'shouse.
Havingreceivedthisnews,GadadharimmediatelyproceededtoSuklambarBrahmacari's
house.Hewasveryeagertowitnesswhathehadjustheardadescriptionof.Withthisin
mindhehidhimselfwithinSuklambar'shouse.ShortlySadasiva,Murari,Sriman,Suklambar
andalltheotherVaisnavasarrivedthere.
Justthenthekingofthebrahmanas,DwijarajBishwambharappearedonthescene.The
VaisnavasallgreetedHimbutHewasnotinexternalconsciousness.Uponseeingallthe
VaisnavasHebegantoreciteaversedescribingthesymptomsofdevotion.
"Ihadobtainedtheobjectofmylife,butnowwherehasHegone?!"
WhilecallingoutinsuchfashionheembracedonepillarwithinSuklambar'shouseandthen
felltotheground.DuetotheintensityoftheLord'semotions,thatpillarbrokeandfelltothe
groundwithPrabhu,ashecalledout,"WhereisKrsna?!"
Lyingthereonthefloor,Hishairscattered,theotherdevoteesalsofadedandsankdownto
thegroundwhilewithinthehouse,Gadadharfainteddeadaway.Whocansaywhofellfirst
orinwhichdirectionsincenoonewasanylongerconsciousofthemselvesasaseparate
livingbeing.TheyhadallfaintedintheecstasyofloveofKrsnawhileJahnabidebi(Mother
Ganges)smiled,lookingoninastonishment.
UponattainingexternalconsciousnessSriBiswambharcriedexcessivelywhilerepeating,
"Krsna!OhKrsna!MyMaster,wherehaveYougone?!"
SayingthismuchHeagainfelltotheground.IntheecstasyofloveofKrsnaPrabhu
SacinandancriedHiseyesout,surroundedbythedevoteeswhoalsocouldnotrestraintheir
tears.ThoughHefelltothegroundagainandagain,nomarksorbruisesappearedonHis
body.BeingtotallyabsorbedinHisowninnerpleasure,Hewasnotawareofanykindof
externalpleasureorpain.FromwithintheoceanoftearsthesoundofKrsnakirtangradually
builtitselfupintoaroaringtumult,asSuklambarBhavanbecameimmersedinafloodof
ecstaticlove.
SriBiswambharsteadiedHimselfforamomentandsatup,buttheshowerofecstasy
continuedtopourincessantly.Hearingthesoundofcryingcomingfromwithinthehouse
Prabhuinquired,"Whoiswithintheroom?"
Suklambarreplied,"YourGadadhar."
Gadadharwassittingwithhisheadhangingdownandcrying,whichsightpleasedSri
Bishwambharverymuch.Prabhucalledtohim,"Gadadhar!Isthatyou?!Theemblemof
virtuouspiety.Fromyourchildhoodyouhavebeensteadfastlydedicatedanddevotedto
Krsna.Mylifehoweverhasbeenwastedinfutilepursuits.Then,justwhenIreceivedthat
pricelesstreasure,bychanceIagainlostHim."

coveredwithdustasHefelldownandrolledonthegroundwhilesobbingandutteringsuch
piteousremarks.InthehappinessofthistormentoffeelingsinseparationfromKrsna
(grievancesofHisheart),thespaceoftheentiredayelapsedasthoughitwasthepassing
awayofonlyamoment.PartiallyregainingsomeexternalconsciousnesstheLordbeggedto
takeleave,whileGadadhar,Sadasiva,SrimanPanditandSuklambarcouldsimplylookonin
astonishment.Everyonewassoamazedthatatfirsttheycouldn'tsayanything,butgradually
theybegantocommenttoeachotheraboutwhathadtranspiredtherethatday.

OnedaySriRatnagarbhacaryawasrecitingversesfromthetenthcantoofSrimad
Bhagavatam,hisheartfilledwithlove.NimaiPandit,inthecompanyofhisstudents,then
happenedtopassbythatway.Hearingtherecitationoftheseverseshepromptlyfaintedina
swoonofecstasywhilehisbodyexhibitedvariousecstaticsymptoms.Afterregaining
consciousnessheroaredloudly,Bol!Bol!Goon!Saymore!Againandagainhefelldown
androlledontheground.Thatbrahmanwasnaturallyinspiredandcontinuedtoreciteverses
asPrabhucametoembracehim.RatnagarbhacaughtholdoftheLordslotusfeetandbegan
tocryashecontinuedrecitingverses.TheecstatictransformationsofMahaprabhucontinued
toincreaseinintensity,somuchsothattheeternalcompanionofMahaprabhu,SriGadadhar,
consideringthetime,placeandcircumstances,hadtoaskRatnagarbhatodiscontinuehis
recitation.GadadharthentriedtograduallypacifyPrabhu.

OnanotheroccasiontheLordtookGadadharwithhimwhenhewenttoseeAdwaitaAcarya.
WhentheyarrivedtheretheAcaryawasengagedintheworshipofLordVisnu,offering
Tulasimanjarisathislotusfeet.Sometimeshewaslaughing,sometimescrying,sometimes
hewouldroarlikeagreatlion.Seeingtheseactivities,executedundertheinfluenceofa
strongdoseofKrsnaprem,SriVisvambharfaintedtotheground.TheAcarya,havingcome
torecognizehiseternalLord,camewiththeplateofTulasiandcandanandbegantoworship
thelotusfeetofSriVisvambhar.RecitingaversefromtheVisnuPuran,heofferedhis
salutations,namobrahmanyadevayagobrahmanahitayaca|jagathitayakrsnayagovindaya
namonamah||,alongwithofferingsofpadya,arghya,acamaniya,gandha,puspa,dhupaand
dipa.Finallyattainingthatobjectthathehadsoferventlyprayedfor,hebathedtheLords
lotusfeetwiththetearsofecstasythatfellfromhiseyes.
Gadadharhadremainedsilentlyobservingthisentiredisplayuntilnow.Inlightofthe
Acaryasageandstature,hisworshipofSriViswambhar,whowasmuchyoungerthanthe
Acarya,seemedoutofplacetoGadadharsohebithistongueandadmonishedAdwaita
Acarya,Acaryaji!Howisitthatyouareengagedintheworshipofonewhoissomuch
youngerthanyou,asisthisNimaiPandit?
AdwaitaAcaryareplied,Gadadhar!Afterafewmoredays,youwillalsobeableto
recognizewhothisboyis!
[Gadadharisaragatmikabhaktaandthepersonificationofworshipinmadhuryarasa,
whereastheAcaryasworshipwasinspiredbyaiswaryajnana.Therefore,thisworship
naturallyappearedinappropriatetoonewhoisaccustomedtoseeingNimaiashisfriendand
constantcompanion,asopposedtoseeinghimastheSupremePersonalityofGodhead.]

WhenMahaprabhubeganHispastimesinNabadwip,Gadadharwashischiefcompanion.
RaiKanai(RadhaKrsna)ofVrajaarenowsportingonthebanksoftheGangaas
GadaiGauranga(GadadharGauranga),andthecowherdboyfriendsofVrajaareassistingin
Theirpastimesofkirtan.

EverydaytheLordwouldengageinkirtanwithHisdevoteesandinthiswayexperience
ecstaticlove.ThetransformationswhichtookplaceinHisbodycanonlyproperlybe
describedbyAnantaSeshHimself.
Hepleadedwitheveryone,"WherecanIgotofindthatdarlingWhoplaysHisfluteso
sweetly(MuraliVadan)?"Sayingthismuchhesigheddeeplyandbegantocry.After
calminghimselfherequestedhisdevotees,"Pleasehearthecauseofmydistress.Thereisno
endtomysufferingbecauseofthis.EvenafterobtainingHeWhoisdearertomethanmy
ownlife(Kanhaiya),IlostHimagain."Beingentreatedinthiswaythedevoteesgathered
aroundtohearhisstory.

"ThereisavillagenamedKanaiNatsala.WhenIwasreturningfromGayaIhappenedto
cometothatplace.ThereIsawoneverybeautifulyoungboy,asdarkasatamaltree,with
beautifullocksofhaircurlingaroundhisearsandeyebrowsandwearinganecklaceofnew
gunjaberries(hard,redberrieswithablackspotononeend).Hisappearancetotally
captivatedMymind.GaylycolouredpeacockfeathersadornedHisheadandthejewelsand
gemstonesonHisbodygleamedandglitteredsomuchthatIcouldn'tevenfixmygazeinHis
direction.InHishandwasaverybeautifulflutewhichwascapableofbewilderingthe
greatestascetics.HislotusfeetwereadornedwithjewelledanklebraceletsandHisarms,
whichweredecoratedwithjewelledornamentsdefeatedthebeautyofbluesapphirepillars.
HischestwasadornedwiththemarkofSribatsa,aswellasnecklacesofjewelslikethe
Kaustubha.HowcanIpossiblydescribethebeautyoftheyellowclothwhichHewas
wearing?Hisearsweredecoratedwithsharkshapedpendants,enhancedbythebeautyofHis
eyes,likethepetalsofalotusflower.Hecamebeforemesmilingsocharmingly,butthen
afterembracingmeHefledaway,towhereIdonotknow."
SriGaursundorwasspeakinginsuchawaythatonlythosewhohavebeenblessedbyHis
mercycouldunderstandwhatHewassaying.SpeakinginthiswayHecalledout,"Ha
Krsna!"andthenfaintedandfelltothefloor.
Thedevoteespickedhimupwhilechanting"Krsna!Krsna!"andbrushedthedustoffhis
body.Hetriedtocalmhimselfbutitwasnouse.
"WhereisKrsna?!WhereisHe!!?,hepleadedwithtearsinhiseyes.
Foramomenthebecamestill,havingregainedthegentlenaturewhichwaspreviouslyhis
normaldisposition.Thedevoteesweredelightedbeyondsatiationtohearofthedevotional
ecstaciesofSriViswambhar.Theyaddressedhim,"Wecannotevenimaginewhatpious
creditwehaveaccumulatedtogetsuchassociationasyours.Howfortunatewehaveactually
becomeisbeyondexpression.Forthosewhohaveattainedyourassociation;whatis
Vaikunthatothem?!Byevenabriefmomentofyourassociationonecanreceivethefruitof
devotiontoKrsna.Wenowbelongtoyou.YouareourMaintainer.HavingbecomeourHero
assuch,pleaseengageusinyourpastimesofsankirtan.Ourbodieshadbeenburnedbythe
wordsoftheatheists.Now,bythewatersoflove,flowingfromyoureyes,pleaseappeaseus
andcoolourscorchedsouls.
Prabhuwasverysatisfiedbytheirwordsandthusencouragedandconsoledthemtothebest
ofhisability.Thenhe,whohadbecomehimselfaslikeamadlion,returnedtohisown
home.
Uponreturninghome,however,hisbehaviourwasnotresolved.Heremainedcontinually
obsessedandpossessedbytheappearanceofevernewerwavesofecstaticlove.Thestreams
ofecstasywhichflowedfromHiseyeswereasliketheappearanceoftheGangesriver.His
onlywordswere,"WhereisKrsna?!WhereisKrsna?!"NomatterwhatanyonesaidtoHim,
thiswashisonlyreply.WheneverandwhicheverdevoteecametoseeHim,hesimply
pleadedwiththeminbetweensobs,"WherehasKrsnagoneto?!"Theycouldonlytryto
consolehimasbestastheycould.
OnedayGadadharcametoPrabhu'shouseinahappymood,bringingwithhimsometambul
(pan&betel)forSriGaursundor.AshecameintotheLord'spresence,Prabhuaskedhimin
anexuberanceofemotion,"Whereisthatdarling,darkcomplexionedboyWhowearsbright
andshiningyellowgarments?!Afteraskingthis,hebegantoshedtearsprofusely.
Toseehisafflictedanddistressedconditionwasenoughtorendone'sheart.Gadadhar
thoughtaboutwhathecouldpossiblysaybutnothingcametohim.Finallyherespectfully
submitted,"Krsnaiscontinuallypresentinyourheart."
WhenPrabhuheardthishebegantotearathisbreastwithhisnailsbutGadadharquickly
grabbedhishands.
Prabhuimploredhim,"Gadadhar!Letgoofmyhands.Icannotremainamomentmore
withoutseeingKrsna."
Gadadharreplied,"Justtrytobealittlepatientandcalmyourself.Krsnawillcomeany
minutenow.Pleaserelax."Hearingthis,Mahaprabhubecamesomewhatcomposed.
Sacimatawaslisteningtoallofthisfromadistanceandsocamerunningthere.Beingvery
pleasedwithGadadhar,shedeclared,"Thoughheisjustaboy,heisveryintelligent.Iam
frightenedtogobeforemysonwhenheisinthesemoods.ButGadadharhasverycleverly
pacifiedhim."

[Whootherthanthemahabhavaswarup,couldunderstandtheecstaticmanifestationsofSri
Viswambhar,whowashimselfundertheinfluenceofmahabhava,thatmahabhavawhichis
onlyexperiencedbythecrestjeweloftheasrayatattva,SriRadhaThakurani.Onlyby
remindingViswambharofhisswarup,asthevisayavigraha,couldGadadharalleviatethe
ecstaticemotionsbroughtaboutbypremvaicittyaintheasrayavigraha.]

DuringthefirstmeetingofSrimanMahaprabhuandSrimanNityanandaPrabhuinthehouse
ofSriNandanAcarya,NityanandaPrabhubecamesooverwhelmedbyecstaticsymptoms
thatMahaprabhuhadtotakehiminhisownlapinordertopacifyhim.Gadadharsmiledto
seethischarmingsceneandexclaimed,
yeanantaniravadhidhareviswambhar|ajitargarvacurnakolerbhitor||
TodaytheprideofSriAnantadeva,whocontinuouslybearsSriViswambhar(themaintainer
oftheuniverses),ishumbled,sittingthereinhislapnow.
Baladeva,inhismanifestationasAnantadeva,servestheLordinthecapacityofhisasana,
bed,slippers,etc.However,inthisincarnationthemostworshipfulSupremePersonalityhas
takentheroleofservitor,andsoservestheservant,SriAnanta,ashissupport.
WhileSrimanNityanandaPrabhuremainedseatedinthelapofSrimanMahaprabhuthe
devoteesgatheredtherecametovariousrealizations,comparingthisscenetoprevious
pastimesoftheLord.SrivasPanditremarkedthattheyappearedtobeSriHariandHara
(Mahadeva),mutuallyengagedineachothersworship.Gadadharreplied,SrivasPandithas
verynicelysumarizedthisscene.Icanthinkofnothinginthisworldtocomparewiththis
rarevision.Iamonlyremindedofthemutualexchangeofaffectionandservicebetween
Ramandhisbrother,Laksmana.
WhenLaksmanawaswoundedonthebattlefieldinLanka,RamheldLaksmanasheadinhis
lapandbathedhimwithhistearsofaffection.Gadadharwasremindedofthiswhilelooking
atMahaprabhuandNityanandaPrabhu.
SrilaGadadharPanditwascontinuouslypresentwithMahaprabhuinallofhispastimesand
alwaysrenderedthemostintimateandappropritateservice.DuringtheperformanceofSri
Vyasapujaheofferedtambula(pan)totheLord.

SriGadadharPanditwasveryaffectionatetowardsMukundaDattaandthedearmostfriend
ofMukunda.WheneveranyVaisnavacametoNabadwip,MukundawouldinformGadadhar
andtheywouldbothgotohavedarshan.
OnetimePundarikVidyanidhicamefromCattagramtoNabadwipsoMukundainvited
Gadadhartocomealongandmeethim.Gadadharwasveryexcitedtomeetsuchavaisnava
andthusthetwoofthemhappilysetouttogethertotakeadvantageofsadhusangawiththis
newcomertoNabadwip.
However,whenGadadharsawthatPundarikVidyanidhidressedandactedlikeawealthy
materialist,helostwhateverreverencehehadpreviouslyfeltbeforemeetinghim.Gadadhar
thoughttohimself,"Howcanavaisnavalookandactasifheissoaddictedtosense
enjoyment?"
Nevertheless,MukundaknewtherealcharacterofPundarikVidyanidhiandcouldaswell
sensethedoubtsinthemindofGadadharPandit.TorevealtherealnatureofVidyanadhi
MahasoyhenowrecitedsomeslokasfromtheSrimadBhagavataminhisverysweetvoice.
PundarikVidyanidhi,hearingthebeautifulrecitationoftheseversesglorifyingdevotion,
begantocryinafitofecstasywhilecallingout,"Krsna!,Krsna!",Atlasthefinallyfainted
deadawayonthefloor.
Gadadharnowfeltveryremorsefulinhismind.Hethoughttohimself,"BecauseIhave
ignorantlyconsideredthishighlyadvancedsoultobeanordinarymaterialist,agreatoffence
hasbeencommittedbyme!InorderthatImightbesavedfromthereactiontothisoffence,I
thinktheonlysolutionistoacceptinitiationfromhim."
GadadharsubmittedhisproposaltoMukunda,whointurnpresentedittoPundarik
VidyanidhiwithafullaccountofthePandit'shighqualifications.Hearingthisproposal,
Pundarikbecameveryhappy."Providencehasbestoweduponmeagreatjewel;certainlyI
willaccepthim.Youshouldn'thaveanydoubtaboutthat.Itistheresultofmanylifetimesof
goodfortunethatonegetsadisciplelikethis."
Onanauspiciousday,SriGadadharPanditreceivedthedivinemantrafromPundarik

[SrilaGadadharPanditGoswamiisthenonmaterial,internalpotencyofSriKrsna.
Thereforeitisnotpossiblefortheexternalpotencyofmayatohaveanyinfluenceoverhim.
Duetotheinfluenceoftheexternalpotencyofmayaonemaybeunabletounderstandthe
transcendentaltruthsregardingVaisnavatattva.mayikdhan,kul,vidyamade,vaisnavana
cine.Intoxicatedbyillusorywealth,aristocraticbirthandlearning,oneisunableto
recognizeatruevaisnava.Inthisinstance,however,sinceSrilaGadadharPanditwas
completelyfreefromanyillusoryinfluence,theonlyexplanationforhisinabilityto
recognizethetrueidentityofVidyanidhiMahasoy,wasthatitwasallduetotheinfluenceof
yogamaya.Thiswasallamanifestationofsvarupsakti,inorderthatthelilabenourishedin
aparticularway;topointoutthetranscendentaltruthsregardingthevaisnavas,thatthey
cannotberecognizedaccordingtoanyexternalsymptoms.Withoutthemercyofapure
vaisnava,itisnotpossibletohavehisdarsan.Thenonmaterialname,abode,lust,pastimes,
associates,etc.oftheSupremeLordcannotbeunderstoodwithmaterial,intelligence,
education,scripturalevidence,experience,ordeliberation.Ifonetriestomeasure
transcendentalsubstancebyanymaterialmeanshecheatshimselfandbecomesanoffender.
Offenseatthelotusfeetofapurevaisnavaislikeneduntoamadelephant,whodevastates
thebhaktilata(devotionalcreeper).Ifoneshouldcommitanoffenseatthelotusfeetofa
suddhabhakta,thenhemustsearchouttheremedy,byappealingtothemercyofthat
vaisnava,andbegginghisforgiveness.Feelinggenuinelyrepentent,hemustfollowthat
devotee,obedientlydedicatinghimselftohisorder.Thisistheonlyretributionforsuchan
offender.
Withoutbecomingthededicatedfollowerofapurevaisnavaandwithouthismercyone
cannothavethedarsanofBhagavanandhisbhaktas.Thesearethelessonstobelearnedfrom
thispastime.]

OnedayafterroamingthroughoutthetownofNabadwip,Mahaprabhucametoaforestand
seatedHimselftherein.SittingthereinthatforeststimulatedtheremembranceofHis
pastimesinVraja.Mukundabegantosingthepurvarag(courtship)songsinaverysweet
voicewhileGadadharcollectedsomeflowersfromthecreepersandbushesthereandafter
stringingagarlandplaceditaroundPrabhu'sneck.
InthesamemannerthatSrimatiRadharaniusedtopreviouslydecorateSriKrsna,Gadadhar
similarlydressedMahaprabhu.Someweresingingbeautifulsongs,whileothersdancedina
verygracefulstyle.SriGaursundortookGadadharbythehandandseatedhimbyHissideon
adiasatthebaseofatreewhileAdwaitaAcaryaofferedarati.NityanandaseatedHimselfon
Prabhu'srightsideasSrivasPanditdecoratedeveryonewithflowergarlands.Narahariwas
fanningtheDivineCouplewithawhisk(camara)madefromthetailhairsofforestcows.
SuklambardecoratedthemallwithsandalwoodpastewhileMurariGuptarecitedthe
premdhvani.AllthewhileMadhava,Vasudeva,Purusottam,Vijay,andMukundacontinued
tosingsongsinthevariousragas.

PanditGadadharistheabodeofallauspiciousqualities.Heremainscontinuouslyinthe
companyofPrabhu,andceaselesslyutterstheholynames.
GadadharstayedwithPrabhu,eventhroughoutthenight,lyinginthecoolingshadeofhis
lotusfeet.Seeinghimreposedthere,PrabhuspoketoGadhadhar,hismindfullwith
satisfaction,YouwilldefinitelyattainthatmostrareobjectofPrem,withthecomingofthe
dawn.ThenheplacedhisgarlandaroundGadadharsneck.
Inthemorning,whenallofthedevoteescametoseePrabhu,hetoldthemhowhehadpassed
thenight.WhilehewasspeakingGadadharbecameoverwhelmedwiththesymptomsoflove
ofKrsna.Hisheartoverflowingwithecstasy,GadadharthenwenttotakebathintheGanga.
HisbodytrembledandthrilledwithdelightduetotheinfluenceofKrsnaprem.Returning
fromMotherGangesheworshipedJagannathdeva,inaccordancewiththescripturalcodes,
andthenagainperformedthesameworshipinthepresenceofhisownPrabhu.Hesmeared
thelimbsoftheLordwithsandalwoodpasteandplacedacelestialgarlandaroundhisneck,
allthewhilerecitingprayersandhymns.Inthisway,hewouldservetheLordeveryday.
IntheSayanMandir(sleepingroom)hearrangestheLordsbed,andthenhimselfliesdown
attheLordslotusfeet.ThemindofGadadharistheabodeofreverentialdevotion.His
sweetspeechdelightsthemindofMahaprabhuViswambhar.Hisheartsprinkledwiththe
dropsofnectarfromthespeechofGadadhar,Prabhudesirestodance.
TakingGadadharbythehand,heplaceshisotherhandinthehandofNarahari.Inthe
courtyardofSrivasa,theEnjoyeroftherasadance(RasVinodiya),dances.Atthattimethe
devoteesseethathisgoldenbodyhasbecomeblackish.Gadadharhasacceptedtheformof
SriRadhaandNarahariappearsasMadhumati.Seeingtheseunprecedentedpastimesthe
devoteesfilltheskywiththeresoundingsoundsofHari!Hari!ThecourtyardofSrivasais
transformedintoVrindabanandSacinandanisnowinthecompanyofhiscows,gopisand
gopals.Thedevoteeshaveallacceptedtheirpreviousidentitiesassakhasandsakhisinorder
torelishtherasaofthispastime.SriNandanandanappearsasanewCupid,the
transcendentalMadan(abhinavaKamadeva,aprakrtaMadan).Thedevotees,allnowintheir
previousbodies,surroundhimlikethepetalsofalotusflower,engagedinecstaticchanting
anddancing.TheassociatesoftheLordsotherincarnationsallbegintocry,seeingthe
dawningoftheVrajacand(MoonofVraja)inNavadwip.
AtonemomentGauraharienjoyshispastimeswithGadadharandthenextmomentShyamis
abosorbedinthemellowsoftherasadancewithSriRadha.Seeingthismostwonderful
pastimethedevoteesmaketheskyrumblewiththethunderoussoundsofHari!Hari!Joy!

totallysubjugatedbyyourlove,Ojewelofthetwiceborn.IamyourLordandyouaremy
life.Allofyoupleaselistentothenectarofthesesoundsasyousaythem,GadaiGauranga,
GadaiGauranga.
Gadadhar,thereisnofeeling,thoughtoremotion(bhav)ofminethatisbeyondyour
perception.Yourbodyisnothinglessthanmyinternalpotency.Nightanddayyouremain
withme,notforsakeingmeforevenhalfamoment.Whoistherewhounderstandsmeasyou
do?PleasebringalloftheVaisnavas,mydearestfriends,tomenowsothatImayseethem.
HavingreceivedtheorderofhisLord,GadadharPanditthenproceededtobringallofthe

classofmen,theireyesfilledwithtears,overwhelmedastheywerebythesighttheysaw

AsthesacrificeofthecongregationalchantingoftheHolyNamesofSriHariismanifested
fromthefifthVeda,SriSivacontinuouslysingsthegloriesoftheLordwithhisfivefaces
(mouths).Naradasingswhilevibratinghisvinaanddancingandthedevoteesheadedby
SukaandSanakaalsodancealongwithhim.RadhaandKrsna,raptintheirownlove,enter
theforestsofVrndabaninthecompanyoftheothergopis,takingthisVedawiththem,and
dance,wanderingfromoneforesttothenext.SinceitisthatthisfifthVedaissituatedinthe
eternalVrndaban,LordSivabecomesoverwhelmedbysentimentsofintenseloveashe
sings,yetheisunabletofindoutthelimitsofthislove.SuchaVedahasmanifestinthisKali
Yuga.ThismostmercifulVedaisvibratedasasongbyhewhoisvigilantenoughtosingthis
song.

Themultitudeofpeople,inalltheordersoflife,constitutethewidthandbreadthofthe
sacrificialfirepit.Thetongueisthesacrificialladleandthemostcaptivatingmellowofthe
soundistheghee.Theflamesoftranscendentalemotionspenetratetheheartandburnthere.
Theflamesofthisfirearemanifestashorripilation(hairsstandingonend)andtremblingin
thebody.Freedfromtheirsins,everyonedances.Thefivekindsofliberation,beginningwith

allkindsofyajna.Hereinwasbornthislove,thegreatestwealththisworldcanknow.The
masterofthehouseinwhichthisyajnatakesplaceisNityananda,disguisedasa
householder.GadadharPanditisthehousewifeweddedtothislove.Thejewelsamongstthe
deardevoteesareallconversantwiththistruth.AdwaitaAcaryaGosainbroughtmehereto
verysteadfastlyestablishthissankirtansacrifice.ThushaveIcometoinstitutethisyajna,in
thecompanyofthedevoteesheadedbySrinivasandNarahari.Performthissacrificeineach
andeveryhomeduringthisageofKali,sothateveryone,includingthemostfallenandsinful
people,willbedelivered.

WhenSriVishwambharHaridancedinthehomeofCandrasekharAcaryaduringthe
dramaticperformancethattookplacethere,Srivas,intheguiseofNaradaMuni,offeredhis
pranamstoPrabhuandthenhumblyofferedthefollowingwords,afterfirststatinghis
positionasaninsignificantservant.ThatMahamuniaddressedGadadharthusly,
PleasehearmeOhGopika!WhateverIhavetosayaboutyourpreviousexistenceI
foundoutfromadivinesoothsayer.Theseunprecedentedwordsofmineareonlytheresult
oftherarityofsuchpersonsasyourselfinthisworld.Carefullyheedthesewordsabout
yourself.ListenaswelltowhatIhavetosayaboutalltheothers,Iamjustsingingafew
stanzasoftheirwonderfulqualities;theyhavealltakentheirbirthinGokul.
Renouncingthevowofchastityandsteadfastnesstooneshusband,youservedanother
ceaselesslyandthusacheivedyourultimatedesireinVrindavan.YouarethePrincipal
Nature,thepotencyofKrsna,SriRadha.WhatdoIknow,toelaborateonthis?Youarethe
crestjewelamongstthemostdelightfuldamsels,themostaffectionateobjectofKrsnaprem
(Krsnaslove).WhatdoIknowtosayregardingthetranscendentaltruthsofyour
personality?Thereisnowheretobefoundanycomparisontoyourdevotion,themost
esotericsecretinallthethreeworlds.Brahma,Mahesvaraandallofthedevas,whattospeak
ofunlimitedLakshmis,orgoddessesoffortune;fieonthemall!Theultimatemercy(prasad)
iswithyouonly.ThedevoteesheadedbyPrahladandNarada,SanatanaandSuka,know
nothingofevenoneinfinitesimalparticleofyourdevotion.Thehusbandofunlimited
Lakshmisinallthethreeworlds,gazesaffectionatelyatyouandpullsyourbodytohis,as
themostexcellentbenedictiontoclotheHimselfwith.TheseLakshmisareyourservants.
Desiringtopossessthelovethatyoudo,affectionandattachmentdawnintheirhearts.The
Masterofalltheworldsisseducedbyyouraffection.Isthereanytreasuremorevaluable
thanyourlove?ThedevoteesheadedbyUddhavaandAkruraareallservantsatthelotus
feet.Pleasecontinuetoshowusyourfavour.
Pleasehearme,OhDevotees!Allofyouarenowawareofthesetruths,thegloriesofthe
mysteriesintheheartofourPrabhu,andasaresultofknowingthis,thetasteofaffectionand
lovehasincreasedsosumptuously.

InSriCaitanyaCaritamrta,Antyalila,Chapterseven,SrilaKrsnadasKavirajaGoswamihas
describedLordCaitanyaspastimeswithVallabhaBhattacarya.Inthiscontextitismentioned
thatSriGadadharPanditsmoodandsentimentsweresimilartothoseofSriRukminiDeviin
Dvaraka.However,intheGauraGanoddesaDipikaitissaidthatPanditGoswami1isthe
svarupaof(hastheselfsameformas)SriRadha.ThisisalsocorroboratedbySrilaSwarup
DamodarGoswami.SriVrndabandasThakur,inhisSriCaitanyaBhagavata,duringthe
descriptionofthedramaenactedatSriCandrasekharBhavan,hasdepictedSriGadadharas
appearingwiththeformofSriRukminidevi,rukminirkackaciyachilen.Thusitappears
thatthereissomeanomaly,sincethenatureofRukminiisrightwing,asopposedtothe
natureofSriRadha,whichisleftwing.Weseefromthispastimethatitwasbythe
influenceofSriGadadharthatBallabhaBhattaacquiredatasteforworshippingKishor
Gopal,insteadofBalaGopal,againpointingtoasharedsimilaritywiththemoodand
sentimentsofSriRadha.WealsohearthatsomeofthefollowersofSriAdwaitacarya,who
wereabsorbedinthemellowsofservitorship,friendshipandpaternallove,laterontook
shelterofSriGadadharPandit,thattheymightworshiptheLordinMadhuryarasa.Srila
GadadharPanditisthechiefamongstthedevoteesoftheLordabsorbedininternalmellows.
Theoutstandingorprimaryindicationsuggestshisidentityasbeingnondifferentfromthat
ofSriRadha,theacmeofperfectionintherealmofmadhuryarasa.Howisthisreconciled
withSrilaKavirajaGoswamisdescriptionofPanditGoswamiassharingthesame
sentimentsasRukmini,whoworshipstheLordinaiswaryajnana(knowledgeofhisfull
opulences)?

SrimanMahaprabhuwantedtoprovokeGadadhartoexhibithisangerinecstaticlove.
However,Gadadharwasinsteadmovedtopanicinfearratherthanfeelanger,similarto
RukminisreactiontoLordKrsnasteasingher.
InSriNilacalaKsetra(JagannathPuri)theatmosphere,theworshipandthefestivalsall
correspondtothemoodsexhibitedinSriKrsnasDwarakapastimes.YetSriman
MahaprabhuandhisassociatessawLordJagannathinHisthreefoldbendingformas
VrindabansMuralidhar.ThoughSriPanditGoswamiistheselfsamepersonasSriRadhika,
certaindevoteessawhimasexhibitingthesamemoodandsentimentsasSriRukminidevi.
SinceSrimatiRadharaniisthesourceofalltheothermanifestationsoftheunlimited
Laksmis,orGoddessesofFortune,itisnotsurprisingthatwithinheralsoaretobefoundthe
moodsandcharacteristicsofSriRukminidevi.
WhenSriKrsnawasteasingRukminishefaintedduetofearoflosingherPranPati,thinking
thathewasgoingtoabandonher.InthispastimewithSriGaursundor,GadadharPandit
becamesimilarlyagitatedduetofear,butthisfearwassimplyoneoftheornaments
decoratinghismostexemplaryhumility.
MahaprabhusmercyuponSriVallabhacaryawastoneglectandinsulthim.Allofthe
followersofSriGaurangaDevadesirethatalllivingentitiesintheuniversemightobtainhis
mercy.However,thepastimesofSriGaursundoraresodeepandunfathomablethattoenter
thereinisaveryrarepriviledge.Thereforethenecessityoftheappearanceofhisassociates
andcompanionsthattheymightenableotherstoreceivehismercy.
[DinaKrsnadas,inhisprayerstoTulasidevi,requeststobemadeahandmaidenofthe
sakhissakhiranugatyakaro.ThisanugatyabhavisthesecrettoenteringintoSri
ShyamsundorsVrajapastimes.Thefamousdevotee,Mirabai,thoughshelivedandservedin
BrindabanfortwelveyearswasultimatelyinspiredtoleaveBrindabanandgotoDwaraka
fromwheresheeventuallyleftthisworld.HermoodwastotryandapproachKrsnadirectly
andtohavehimasherhusband.However,inVraja,thismoodisnotauthorized.Without
receivingthemercyofthepreviousacaryas,withoutreceivingtheblessingsoftheLords
associates,thereisnochanceofapproachinganywherenearhim.Noamountofsadhana,
whattospeakofpiousactivitesorausterities,canenableonetoapproachthismostsacred
realm.Allsadhana,allservicerenderedissimplyforthepurposeofpleasingtheassociates
oftheLordthattheymightbestowuponustheirglanceofcompassion.Onlybyconvincing
themofoursincerityisthereanyscopeforenteringintothecircleoftheLordsaccociates.]
Gadadharwasconfidentintherolehewastoplayinthispastimeandhewasalsoconfident
thatAntaryamiPrabhu(SriGaursundorsParamatmamanifestation)couldnever
misunderstandhisgoodintentions.Whathewasafraidofwas,nottheLordsreactiontohis
behaviour,butthepossibilitythatMahaprabhusassociateswouldmisunderstandhis
purpose.ThatpersonwhomtheLordhadneglectedandinsultedwasnowbeingindulgedby
PanditGoswami.InotherwordsPanditGoswamiwasnowpreparedtoexceedtheLordin
hisabilitytoshowVallabhacaryadivinemercy,bybehavingwithhiminafashionthat
contradictedtheLordsdealingswithhim.Thattheotherdevoteesmightthinklikethiswas
thereasonforGadadharsfear.
GadadharsdealingswithVallabhacaryawerenotcontradictorybutrathercomplementary.
Forthisreasonhesimplytoleratedanybackbitingandrumourmongeringthatmighthave
beengoingonwithouttryingtoexplainhisactivities,knowingfullythatSriGaursundor
understoodhisinnermostmotives,ifeventheotherdevoteesdidnot.Hedidnttrytodefend
hisactivitiesorshowanyangerduetothefactthathehadbeenmisunderstood.Hedidnt
exhibitanythingresemblingtheleftwingnaturethatJaganandaPanditwaswontto,by
stormingoffinaragetogoandlockhimselfinhisroomoranyothersuchbehaviour.
ThisisnotamatterofRukminiorSatyabhamascomplementaryorcontradictorybehaviour.
Itisthemanifestationofthemostsublimemagnanimityinbestowingthesupraeminent
qualityofVrajaPrem.

IamtheservantofKrsnaslotusfeetandHeisthereservoirofthehappinessofloving
mellows.If,byhisembrace,hemakesmehisown,orifhedeniesmehisdarsanwithout
knowingmymindortheconditionofmybody,still,heistheLordofmylife.Ohsakhi!
PleasehearthedoubtlessdecisionIhavemade.Whetherheisaffectionatetomeorwhether
heonlygivesmepain,KrsnaistheonlyMasterofmyheart,therecanbenoother.Idont
considermyownsuffering,Ionlydesirehishappiness.Hishappinessisthepurportofmy
life.If,bygivingmepainhegetsgreatpleasure,thenthatpainismybesthappiness.

ThesymptomsofpurelovepossessedbySrilaGadadharPanditGoswamiwerevery
relishabletoSriGaursundor,thushebecameverypleasedbytastingthemoodsofthislove.
TheinterestandeagernessofSriGaursundor,whowasimmersedinthemoodand
sentimentsofSriRadhainrelishingthesweetnessofVrajaPrem,toappreciatetheloveof

Oneday,ontheeveofSriRadhastami,SrimanMahaprabhuinstructedSriPundarik
VidyanidhithattheywouldbecelebratingtheappearancedayofSrimatiRadhikaathis
housethenextday.Dressingthemselvesascowherdboystheybeganthefestivities.AsSri
GaursundarlookedatGadadharoutofthecornersofhisreddisheyes,tearsofecstasybegan
tostreamdownhischeeks.Mukunda,MadhavaandVasusangsongsdescribingthe
wonderfulqualitiesofSriRadhikaasherAbhishekwasperformed.Theworldfilledwiththe
auspicioussoundsofthekhol(mrdanga)andkartalswhilePrabhudanced,andDharanidevi
(MotherEarth)swayedunderhisfootsteps.Therestofthedevotees,headedbyGauridas,
werealldancingaswell.Whocouldretaintheircomposureseeingthemdanceastheydid,
alldressedascowherdboys?PundarikVidyanidhidanced,hisheartfilledwithintense
desire,asbutter,yoghurtandmilkcolouredwithturmericwerethrownonthedevotees
bodies,enhancingthebeautyoftheirecstaticornaments.Seeingthesepastimes,Prabhu
Nityananda,AdwaitaandSrivaswereallfloatinginanoceanofjoy.Thegentlemenand
gentleladiesallcamerunningtoseethefun.Enteringthecourtyardtheylookedallaround,
drinkinginthatcelebrationoftranscendentalmerrymakingwithalloftheirsenses.The
ladiesyodeledasthedevasinheavendancedandraineddownflowerpetals.Someone
remarked,Whoisthatdancinginthecenter?Agoldencupid?!Narahari(Cakravarti/
authorofBhaktiRatnakar)alsodancedasPundarikVidyanidhishouseshonewiththesame
splendorasSriVrsabhanupur.

Aftercausingthedevoteestoheartranscendentaltruthsfromthemouthofthedeadsonof
SrivasPandit,Prabhucamebacktohishouse,andafterbathing,satdowntoworshipLord
Visnu.However,withinamomenthisbodyandclotheshadallbecomewetbytheincessant
flowoftearsfromhiseyes.Thushecameoutsideandputonafreshsetofclothes.Thesetoo,
wereveryquicklydrenchedbyhistearsandso,onceagain,heputonfreshclothes.Asmany
timesashechangedhisclothes,theystillbecamesoakedwithhistears.Finally,theLord
requestedGadadhar,YoupleaseworshipLordVisnu.Iamnotsofortunate.

WhenMahaprabhurevealedhisdesiretoNityanandaPrabhu,toaccepttheorderofsannyasa,
Nityanandafaintedstraightaway,thinkingoftheintensesorrowthiswouldbringto
SaciMata.ThenPrabhucameandinformedMukundaofhisdesire.Mukundarequestedhim
towaitsomedaysfurther.WhentheLordexpressedhisdesiretoGadadharitwaslikeabolt
oflightningthatstruckGadadharonthehead.Mortifiedtothequick,Gadadharreplied,I
wasntawarethatbysimplygivinguponessikhaandsutra(upanayansacredthread)Krsna
isattainable.SoamIthentounderstandthatonecannotbeaVaisnavaandremainathomeat
thesametime?Whatisaccomplishedsimplybyshavingthehead?Thiskindofactionisnot
sanctionedbythesastras.Howcanyouleaveyourmotherwhohasnooneelsetoprotect
her?Youwillsimplybecomeanaccomplicetoherdeath.Ifyougothenherlifewillalsogo,
sinceherlifeisonlyinyou.IsitthattheSupremeLordisnotsatisfiedifoneremainsat
home?Actuallythehomeofahouseholderistheplacewhereallpeoplecanbecome
satisfied.Anyway,ifyouthinkthatitisahealthyandwholesomethingtoshaveyourhead,
thenfine.Dowhateveryouwish;goaheadandleave.

WhenPrabhuclosedhispastimesinNadiya,HetookupresidenceatNilacal,asperHis
mother'srequest.Gadadharalsowenttolivethere,wherePrabhuengagedhimintheservice
ofSriTotaGopinath.MahaprabhuwouldveryoftenvisitHisdearfriendGadadharandlose
HimselfindiscussionsonthetopicsofSriKrsna,asGadadharrecitedtheSrimad
Bhagavatam.ThetempleofSriTotaGopinathjiislocatedneartheoceanatJameshwar.

WhenLordCaitanyatravelledtoSriVrindaban,Gadadharcouldnotbeartobeseparated
fromHimandwantedtogoalsobutMahaprabhuremindedhimofhisvowofKsetra
sannyasa(bywhichhewastoremainconstantlyinSriKsetraintheserviceofSriGopinath).
Somehoworotherhewassentback,afteralongstruggle.Thispastimeisverynicely
describedintheSriCaitanyaCaritamrta.

AftermeetingwithMahaprabhu,NityanandacametohavedarshanofLordJagannathand
afterenjoyingsomeecstaticpastimesthere,HecametoseeGadadhar.Theloveandaffection
whichNityanandafeltforGadadharcanonlybedescribedbytheSupremeLordHimself.
WithinGadadhar'sresidencetheenchantingfigureofGopinathwaspresent.Heappearedto
benoneotherthanthesonofNandaMaharajaHimself(NandaKumar);somuchsothatone
dayLordCaitanyapersonallyembracedHim.Eventhegreatestatheistforgetshimselfupon
havingdarshanofSriGopinathji.AnunlimitedflowoftearscameoutfromLord
Nityananda'seyesashegazeduponthethreefoldbendingformofSriGopinathji,withHis
flutepressedtoHislips.
WhenGadadharcametoknowthatNityanandaPrabhuhadarrivedhelefthisreadingofthe
SrimadBhagavatamandrushedtoreceivehim.Assoonastheireyesmettheybegantocry
astheyembracedeachotherfirmly.Whilemutuallyofferingtheirnamaskars,eachbeganto
praisetheother,"Todaymyeyeshavebecomepurified.""Todaymylifehasbecome
successful."
Theylostexternalconsciousnessastheybegantofloatintheoceanofecstaticlove.Such
manifestationsofdivinelovecausedthosepresenttoalsoshedtearsofecstasy.Therewasso
muchaffectionbetweenthemthattheywerebothcarefulnottoutteranywordswhichmight
betakenbytheotherasunpleasant.Gadadharhadafirmresolutionnottoseethefaceof
anyonewhocriticizedNityanandaPrabhu.PanditGosai(Gadadhar)refusedtoseeeventhose
whohadnoloveforNityanandaSwarup.
FinallytheycomposedthemselvesandsatdowntodiscusstheauspiciousqualitiesofSri
Caitanya.GadadhardevarequestedNityanandatotakehismealtherethatday.Nityananda
hadbroughtforSriGopinathveryfine,whitericefromGaurdeshwhichwasofexcellent
quality.HehadalsobroughtaverybeautifulcolouredclothforGopinath.Bothofthesehe
nowpresentedtoGadadhar.Nityanandatoldhim,"PleasecookthisriceforGopinath."
Gadadharreplied,"Ihaveneverbeforeseensuchriceasthis.Haveyoubroughtthisricefor
GopinathfromVaikuntha?OnlytheGoddessofFortuneLaksmidevicookssuchriceasthis,
andonlyKrsnaistheenjoyerofsuchdelicaciesasthis.OfcourseHeisverykindinthatHe
keepsHisprasadamforHisdevotees."
IngreathappinessGadadharpraisedthisriceandthenwenttopresentthenewclothto
Gopinath.AfterputtingthatdivineclothonGopinath'sbodyhefeltextremelydelightedto
seeitsbeautifulappearance.
ThenhewenttocookforGopinathafterfirstgoingoutintothegardentopicksomespinach.
Thisspinachwasnotplantedbyanyonebutgrewtherewild.Healsobroughtsomesoftnew
tamarindleavesandafterpreparingthemintoapaste,placedtheminsaltwater.Withthese
hepreparedonevegetablecalledamla.
InthiswaythehighlyfortunateGadadharcookedforLordGopinath.Justashebroughtthe
bhogabeforeSriGopinathtoofferit,SriGauracandraarrivedthere.Whilerepeating"Hare
KrsnaKrsna",Hesmiledbrightly,inanenlivenedmood.
SriGauracandracalledout,"Gadadhar!Gadadhar!"
GadadharcameandrespectfullyofferedprayersatHislotusfeet.Prabhulaughedandspoke

ThustheLordsatdowntohonourthatprasad,beinghighlypleasedwiththericebroughtby
NityanandaSwarup.ThetwoPrabhussatdownsidebysidewhilecontinuing,ingreat
satisfaction,topraisethericeandvegetablesthathadbeenpreparedbyGadadhar.
Prabhusaid,"SimplythesmellofthisriceissufficienttoawarddevotionofKrsna.Don't
takeitotherwise.Gadadhar!Yourcookingissocharming.Ihavenevereatenspinachas
goodasthisbefore.Itisverywonderfulthatyouhavepreparedthisothervegetable
preparationsimplyfromtamarindleaves.NowIhaveunderstoodthatactuallyyouarethe
onewhodoesthecookinginVaikuntha.Whyareyoutryingtohideyourtrueidentity?
InthiswaythesethreePrabhusacceptedtheirlunch,enjoyingthemellowsoflovewhile
jokingtogether.Thisgreatlysatisfiedallthosepresent.Whobutthethreeofthemcan
understandtheaffectiontheyfeelforeachother?SriGauracandraneverspokeneglectfulor
insultingwordstoanyone.
AfterashortwhilePrabhufinishedHismealandthedevoteesthenplunderedHisremnants
afterHegotuptowashHishands.
WhoeverhearsorreadsaboutthisecstaticluncheonthattookplaceatGadadharBhavan;
whattospeakofdevotiontoKrsna,hewillattainKrsnaHimself.Whoeverreceivesthe
auspiciousglanceofGadadharbecomesabletoknowsomethingaboutNityanandaSwarup,
andwhoeverfeelsaffectionforNityananda,Gadadharrecognizesandtakesintohispersonal

ofMahaprabhuwasfoundlyingontheground.Aslight,goldenhuedcrackwhichisstillto
beseenneartherightkneeofSriGopinathjiisthespotwhereMahaprabhuissaidtohave
enteredtheDeity.]

WhenSrinivasarrivedinPuri,Gadadharwasstilltherebutinnameonly.Srinivasofferedhis
obeisancesbuttherewasnovisiblesignthatGadadharwasawareofhispresence.Gadadhar
lookedlikethefullmoonduringaneclipse.Hisclothwasdrenchedfromhistears.Thehairs
onhisbodystoodonendasheroaredveryloudly.Sometimeshisbodytrembledand
appearedveryfrail.Hehardlyateanything.Sometimeshelookedverypaleandtriedto
speaksomethingbutthewordsgotcaughtinhisthroat.Sometimeshelaughedand
sometimesitseemedthathisbreathinghadstopped.Hegotupandwalkedhitherandthither
lamentingallthewhile.Hewasnotawareofthecomingsandgoingsofanyone.
Srinivaswasastounded.Hewantedtosaysomethingbuthejustcouldn'tfindthecourage.
Thatdayheremainedtheresilently.Thenextdaywhenhesawwhathethoughtmightbean
opportunity,hespoketoPanditGosvami.AtthesoundofhisvoiceGadadharregainedsome
externalconsciousness.
HetriedtorecitetheBhagavatamforSrinivasbutthisfilledhimwithsomuchremembrance
ofMahaprabhuthathecouldn'tgoon.HehandedthemanuscripttoSrinivassothathemight
recitesomethingbutSrinivassawthatmanyofthepageswereillegible,thewordshaving
beensmudgedbeyondrecognition.Gadadharexplainedthatasheusedtoread,thetearsof
Prabhufellonthepagesandcausedtheinktorun.Nowitwasnotpossibletoreadmanyof
thewords.HewentontosaythathewasencouragedbySrinivas'sassociation,after
practicallyhavingdrownedhimselfinhistearsofseparationfromMahaprabhu,soifSrinivas
wouldbringanothercopyoftheBhagavatamfromBengal,thenGadadharwouldtryhisbest
toinstructhimatthattime.
BythetimeSrinivashadreturnedhowever,Gadadharhadalreadyleftthisworld.
