Social Studies 8 Course Outline: 2017

This course is designed to introduce students to the concept of Worldview through the
examination of the Italian Renaissance, and a critical exploration of current events. Critical
thinking and skill building in the academic humanities will be an additional, yet major, theme of
the course to develop a well-rounded skill set and prepare students for high- school social studies
curriculum.

Timeline (Approximate)
Worldview Introduction: 2 Weeks
Chapter 1: What were the factors that shaped the Renaissance worldview?: 2.5 Weeks
Chapter 2: How did the ideas of the Italian Renaissance spread throughout Europe?: 3.5 weeks
Chapter 3: How did the Western Worldview grow out of the Renaissance?: 5 Weeks
Unit Test Review: 1 Week
Worldview in Canada: A study of diversity and multiculturalism & Introduction to Japan: 1
Week

Expectations:
1. Students are expected to follow school-wide principles of respect and mature conflict
resolution. Respect for each other, our classroom, our school, and ourselves.
- Dont cause problems for anyone else
2. Students are expected to raise their hands to ask questions, questions are highly
encouraged, and Im happy to answer but raising your hands lets me keep track of things.
3. All students will be in class on time with the appropriate learning materials (a writing
utensil, any note sheets, paper work, assignments, and a binder)
4. Students are expected to use their class time wisely, and in a manner that supports their
learning.
5. Students are expected to hand in all assignments and projects on their assigned due dates.
If you are unable to hand an assignment in on time I may choose to give an extension but
this will have to be discussed with me prior to the due date.
Assessment
Assessment of student learning will be a mix of projects, chapter quizzes, daily assessments,
current events, and a final unit test. Students will have time in class to complete each project but
if this class time is not used appropriately it is expected that students will complete their projects
at home to have them in on their assigned due date.
