Activity
In this lesson, students will be introduced to data collection, organize data, and show what they
have learned through observing, collecting, and organizing data. The lesson will begin with the
teacher explaining how to use a bar graph and its benefits. The teacher will provide an example
of a bar graph and go over all the key elements such as title, key, x and y axis. The teacher will
then ask the students if their favorite pizza topping is pepperoni, cheese, deluxe or other. The
teacher will record the data on the board. Next, the teacher will tell the students to pull out the
laptops provided and go to a graph making site where the students will create their own bar
graph using the information recorded about pizza toppings. The website the students will use is
https://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/createagraph/ . It allows students to input the information and
create a digital bar graph and allows them to utilize technology to their advantage. Relating to
the SOL standards, the students will learn how to organize the data into a bar graph.
