Social media use had an increasingly significant influence on multiple facets of modern
life beyond online communication. Online social networking sites, such as Facebook, Instagram,
and Twitter, have become increasingly popular and almost an integral part of everyday life.
Unfortunately, young adults, the most active social media users, have a predominantly high risk
for developing different health issues, making this connection particulary concerning.
Few ressearch studies, have examined the total effect of periodic social media use on the
mental health and well being of its users. This limited understanding is specifically concerning in
the context of teens and young adult users, as these groups tend to spend the most time
socializing online and are therefore at the greatest risk of experiencing potentially negative
effects.
Around the world, internet users grew by 10 percent, or an additional 354 milliion
people, while active social media users jumped to 21 percent, or an additional 482 million. The
total internet penetration rate stood at 50 percent or 3.77 billion people, the Digital in 2017 report
showed.
In the Digital shift, the Philippines has taken the global lead in at least one measure: time
spent on social media. That is according to the closedly followed internet trends report released
by Social Media Management platform Hootsuiti and United Kingdom-based consultancy we are
social Ltd. on Tuesday. The report, called Digital in 2017, showed that Filipinos spent an average
of 4 hours and 17 minutes per day on social media sites such as Facebook, Snapchat, and
Twitter. The data were based on active monthly user data from social media companies as recent
as Jan. 2017.
There are many conflicting views on the effects of frequent use of social mediasome
findings suggest positive effects while others suggest negative effects, although most studies
suggest health effects on the users. To help address this knowledge gap, a quantitative study was
conducted to explore the relationship between social media use and health effects within a
college population.
This study aims to determine the health effects of prolonged social media use. It seeks to
