BRITISH

STANDARDS AND
AMERICAN
STANDARDS
STANDARD

A standard is a published
document that contains a
technical specification or
other precise criteria
designed to be used
consistently as a rule,
guideline, or definition.
STANDARD

Standards all have the same

basic purpose of setting out
agreed principles or criteria
so that their users can
make reliable assumptions
about a particular product,
service or practice.
STANDARD

In essence, a standard is an
agreed way of doing
something.
STANDARD

It could be about making a

product, managing a process,
delivering a service or
supplying materials
standards can cover a huge
range of activities undertaken
by organizations and used by
their customers.
BRITISH STANDARDS

British
Standards are the
standards produced
by BSI Group
BRITISH STANDARDS

BSI Group, also known as

the British Standards
Institution (or BSI), is
the national standards
body of the United Kingdom
BRITISH STANDARDS

BSI is obliged to adopt and

publish all European
Standards as identical
British Standards (prefixed
BS EN) and to withdraw pre-
existing British Standards
that are in conflict
BRITISH STANDARDS

However, it has the

option to adopt and
publish international
standards (prefixed BS
ISO or BS IEC).

BRITISH STANDARDS
Formal British Standards are
titled BS (for British Standard)
XXXX[-P]:YYYY where XXXX is
the number of the standard, P
is the number of the part of
the standard (where the
standard is split into multiple
parts) and YYYY is the year of
publication.
BRITISH STANDARDS

BSI Group currently

has over 30,000
standards.
BRITISH STANDARDS
BSI Group began in 1901 as
the Engineering Standards
Committee, led by James
Mansergh, to standardize the
number and type
of steel sections, in order to
make British manufacturers
more efficient and
competitive.
BRITISH STANDARDS

Examples of British Standards

BS 0 A standard for standards specifies Development, Structure and Drafting of

British Standards themselves.
BS 1 Lists of Rolled Sections for Structural Purposes

AMERICAN STANDARDS

American National
Standards Institute (ANSI)

Founded: 1918
AMERICAN STANDARDS

ANSI is a private non-profit

organization that oversees
the development
of voluntary consensus
standards for products,
services, processes,
systems, and personnel in
the United States.
AMERICAN STANDARDS

Prior to 1918, these were the five founding

engineering societies:
American Institute of Electrical
Engineers (AIEE, now IEEE)
American Society of Mechanical
Engineers (ASME)
American Society of Civil
Engineers (ASCE)
American Institute of Mining Engineers
(AIME, now American Institute of Mining,
Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers)
American Society for Testing and
Materials (now ASTM International)
AMERICAN STANDARDS

ANSI's members are

government agencies,
organizations, corporations,
academic and international
bodies, and individuals. In
total, the Institute represents
the interests of more than
125,000 companies and
3500000 professionals.
AMERICAN STANDARDS

Though ANSI itself does not

develop standards, the
Institute oversees the
development and use of
standards by accrediting the
procedures of standards
developing organizations.
AMERICAN STANDARDS

ANSI accreditation signifies

that the procedures used by
standards developing
organizations meet the
Institute's requirements
AMERICAN STANDARDS

Through ANSI, the U.S. has

immediate access to the ISO
and IEC (International electrotechnical
commission) standards
development processes.
AMERICAN STANDARDS

ANSI currently provides a

forum for more than 200 ANSI-
accredited standards
developers representing
approximately 200 distinct
organizations in the private
and public sectors.
