EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Social responsibility is an ethical framework which suggests that an entity, be it an organization or

individual, has an obligation to act for the benefit of society. Being Socially Responsible means that
people and organizations must behave ethically and with sensitivity toward social, cultural,
economic and environmental issues. Striving for social responsibility helps individuals,
organizations and governments have a positive impact on development, business and society with a
positive contribution to bottom-line results. It is considered a voluntary action on the part of an
individual or a business or an organization, who will take the decision whether to take up any such
responsibilities.

In the same line of context, members of Lions Club of Bangalore South is a fully dedicated team
that contributes to the society. This NGO is one of the biggest non-governmental organization
catering to the needs of the society. Lions Club of Bangalore South operates a Clinical service in
Gavipuram, Bengaluru. This service also provides Dental service. They mainly focus on serving
underprivileged families of ward 142 and 155 in Bengaluru.

This project is mainly concerned in increasing efficiency of the clinical service. The project
commences with the problem identification and then proceeds to solution delivery. The aim is to
implement lean concepts of management and reduce the non-value added activities in the clinical
service. The project also deals eliminating manual procedures and replacing them with digital
process. This has resulted in cost saving on unnecessary use of register books. Also extensive
trainings were given to the staff members. In addition to this, workshops on 5S implementation
followed by hands on training were provided to the staff. This project proved to be an immense
learning platform in terms of implementation of lean concepts and methods to overcome challenges.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

The project is related to societal concern, which was given for supporting the activities in the
organisation.

This deals with creating more awareness and helping such organizations to adopt better strategic
decisions. This has helped us to get some insights of NGOs as Strategic Business Unit.

Social Concern Project is related to knowing and improving the social issues or social conflict,
which influences a considerable number of the individuals within a society.

Social Concern Project is a collective social action given by the institution for the sake of providing
social benefit by the youth to the society by using his/ her own skills and also using management
skills for the better development and framing policies to the organisation so as to control the issues
and perform effectively for the betterment of the society.
1.1 NGO

A non-governmental organization (NGO) is a not-for-profit organization that is independent from

states and international governmental organizations. They are usually funded by donations but some
avoid formal funding altogether and are run primarily by volunteers. NGOs are highly diverse
groups of organizations engaged in a wide range of activities, and take different forms in different
parts of the world. Some may have charitable status, while others may be registered for tax
exemption based on recognition of social purposes. Others may be fronts for political, religious, or
other interests.

NGOs are difficult to define, and the term 'NGO' is not always used consistently. In some countries
the term NGO is applied to an organization that in another country would be called an NPO (non-
profit organization), and vice-versa. There are many different classifications of NGO in use. The
most common focus is on "orientation" and "level of operation". An NGO's orientation refers to the
type of activities it takes on. These activities might include human rights, environmental, improving
health, or development work. An NGO's level of operation indicates the scale at which an
organization works, such as local, regional, national, or international.

Although it is often assumed that NGOs are charities or enjoy non-profit status, some NGOs are
profit-making organizations such as cooperatives or groups that lobby on behalf of profit-driven
interests. For example, the World Trade Organization's definition of NGOs is broad enough to
include industry lobby groups such as the Association of Swiss Bankers and the International
Chamber of Commerce. Such a broad definition has its critics. It is more common to define NGOs
as those organizations that pursue some sort of public interest or public good, rather than individual
or commercial interests.

However, one characteristic these diverse organizations share is that their non-profit status means
they are not hindered by short-term financial objectives. Accordingly, they are able to devote
themselves to issues that occur across longer time horizons, such as climate change, malaria
prevention or a global ban on landmines. Public surveys reveal that NGOs often enjoy a high degree
of public trust, which can make them a useful - but not always sufficient - proxy for the concerns of
society and stakeholders. Not all NGOs are amenable to collaboration with the private sector. Some
will prefer to remain at a distance, by monitoring, publicizing, and criticizing in cases where
companies fail to take seriously their impacts upon the wider community. However, many are
showing a willingness to devote some of their energy and resources to working alongside business,
in order to address corporate social responsibility.
CHAPTER 2

PROFILE OF THE ORGANISATION

BANGALORE GAVIPURAM LIONS CLUB:

Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organization with more than 1.4 million
members in approximately 46,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas around
the world.

- to serve their community.

Lions have a dynamic history. Founded in 1917, we are best known for fighting blindness,
but we also volunteer for many different kinds of community projects - including caring for
the environment, feeding the hungry and aiding seniors and the disabled.
Lions give sight. By conducting vision screenings, equipping hospitals and clinics,
distributing medicine and raising awareness of eye disease, Lions work toward their mission
of providing vision for all. We have extended our commitment to sight conservation through
countless local efforts and through our international SightFirst Program, which works to
eradicate blindness.
Lions serve youth. Our community projects often support local children and schools
through scholarships, recreation and mentoring. Internationally, we offer many programs,
including the Peace Poster Contest, Youth Camps and Exchange and Lions Quest. Our Leo
Program provides the youth of the world with an opportunity for personal development
through volunteering. There are approximately 144,000 Leos and 5,700 Leo clubs in more
than 140 countries worldwide.
Lions award grants. Since 1968, the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) has

Lions Club of Bangalore South primarily offers two types of Clinical Services. These are:

1. The first type of clinical service is provided by Lions Club of Bangalore South to
underprivileged families in ward number 142 and 155. The facilities provided are general

Lions Club of Bangalore south conducts Blood donation camps, eye check-up camps, Health Check-
up camps etc. These activities are entirely dedicated to serve the nation at the best possible way.
Lions Club of Bangalore south recently conducted eye check-up camp at SOS Children village. It
also conducts immunization camps for children and awareness programmes.

4.2 PROCEDURE DETAILS

The process for the Clinical Service at Lions Club of Bangalore South is as follows:

1. Firstly, the patients come and waits at the waiting lounge. Upon their turn, they proceed to
towards the Doctor for Check-up.
2. If it is a general check-up, then they are given an OPD (Out Patient Department) Card which
contains details such as Name, Age, Gender, Address, Medical History, Prescription details
and Visit Date. Each OPD Card has a card number. This OPD card is taken by the patients.
3. For Pregnancy check-up, Antenatal Card is given. Each card has its own card number. The
card contains details such as Order of Pregnancy, age, abortion premature, F.T date, general
information of the patients etc. This card is used for three visits which are pregnancy,
delivery and pure perium. The cards are taken by the patients and it is necessary for them to
bring this during their re-visit.
4. For Immunization, children immunization card is provided. In this case also, each card has
its own unique number. Immunization of the children are done in four sessions after birth.
The first session is held at 6th Week, then at 10th week followed by 14th week and 9 months.
This card contains vital details such as THAYI card number and Hepatitis details. It is
important for the parent to bring this card in each session.
5. Once the check-up is done, patients proceed towards the Pharmacy to receive the medicine
as prescribed by the doctor. Mostly the medicines are received from the government of India.
6. In case of Dental Clinic, same procedure is followed but there is also a cash counter for the
payment of the prescribed fees.

Lions Club of Bangalore South handles a large number of patients. The patients generally belong
from the nearby slum areas. The peak times are from morning 10:0 am to 1:00 pm and 2:30pm to
4:00pm. The clinical service operates from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. The clinical service is closed on
Second Saturday of every month.
4.3 PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION

During the visit at this NGO, certain problems were identified. These problems are stated as follows:

1. Lack of Awareness about the free health check-up facility available at Lions Club of
Bangalore South.
2. No online presence of Lions Club of Bangalore South.
3. No proper Social media page.
4. No Facebook presence.
5. No awareness about the free Vasectomy and Tubectomy Surgery available at Lions Club of
Bangalore South.
6. No awareness about the vaccination and immunization facility available at Lions Club of
Bangalore South.
7. No awareness about the affordable dental facilities available at Lions Club of Bangalore
South.
8. The clinical service at the NGO lacked proper sign boards and thus at certain times it was
difficult for the patients to identify the proper area.
9. No awareness about the Eye check-up facility available at Lions Club of Bangalore South.
4.4 SOLUTION DELIVERY

The solution delivery was basically conducted in the following manner:

4.4.1 Eye Check-up Camp at SOS Village.

As a part of the awareness campaign, we conducted Eye check-up drive at SOS children Village.
4.4.2 Layout Planning and Sign Board Design

The following medical signboards were designed by us:

4.4.3 Online Presence

To cater the need of the online presence, I developed a website for Lions Club of Bangalore South.

A website is a great medium to have an online presence.

Communication is THE most important tool in promoting the cause(s) represented by any civil
society organization(CSO), the internet is the fastest growing means of communication. The
power of the Internet as a means of communication which has now becomes an integrated part of
our society can be largely harnessed by an NGO which has a website. The ability to spread your
ideas, tell the how you do what you do, why you do it, where youre doing it, why you need
assistance in doing it is key to the survival of any CSO and a website provides you with that
opportunity to a limitless audience, unhindered by distance and time, a websites have become one
of the most effective means of communication.
NGOs and CSOs should take advantage of this modern and effective means of communication.

Heres a list of benefits of a website to NGOs and CSOs

A website is an avenue to create awareness about your organization, its mission, vision
beliefs and efforts
A website is a Billboard without the limitation of location and space where you could tell
anyone with Internet access whatever you please
A website would provide your organization the avenue to showcase what it has done, what
it is currently doing, this could go a long way to help get new grants
A website would provide the world with your contact information, the fastest means of
research now is the Internet, but organizations without websites would not benefit really
from such research. Say a donor organization was looking for NGOs in your geographical
area that do what you do, how would they find you?
A website could serve as a proof of legitimacy and functionality in some scenarios
A website would increase public respect and trust for your organization
A website would provide your organization with reliable custom email address, unlike yahoo
and Gmail, your email address would be yourname@yourorganization.org

A website is also deemed to be an environmentally friendly way of carrying out a campaign as it

reduces waste, could reduce travel, reduce postage. So, if you are a socially and environmentally
conscious organization, it becomes unimaginable to think that you can continue to do your
operations without owning a website!
Blogging is extremely useful for building and maintaining your brand identity and brand awareness
online. Incorporating a business blog in your marketing plan will provide instant exposure to your
brand on various platforms especially with search and social media.

Start with creating content that is of interest to your audience. Your blog articles should be about
things that are relevant to the services or products you offer. This way the consumer understands
who you are, connects with you on a deeper level, recognizes your work and seeks it out from others.
The idea here is to ensure that you are creating great content that is helpful by providing answers to
the questions your targeted consumers are asking. By doing this you will begin to establish your
business and brand authority.
4.4.4 Awareness Posters and Banner Designs

A vasectomy is a procedure
that makes a man permanently
unable to get a woman
pregnant. It involves cutting or
blocking two tubes, called the
vas deferens, so that sperm can
no longer get into the semen.
Vasectomy may be the safest,
most effective kind of birth
control. Only about 1 or 2 out
of 1,000 couples get pregnant
the first year after a vasectomy.
A vasectomy is usually done in
your doctors office or in an
outpatient surgery centre. The
operation takes about 30
minutes. Youll be awake
during the procedure. Your
doctor will give you a local
anaesthetic to numb your
scrotum. After youre numb,
your doctor will make a very small puncture (hole) on one side of your scrotum and pull out part of
the vas deferens on that side. You may feel some tugging and pulling. He or she will then remove a
small section of the vas deferens, and seal it with small clamps. Your doctor will then do the same
thing on the other side. The puncture is so small that it heals without stitches.
Tubectomy also referred
to, as Tubal Sterilization is
a surgical procedure done
on women as a permanent
method of contraception.
Gynaecologists, general
surgeons and laparoscopic
surgeons perform
tubectomy. The Fallopian
Tubes are two in number
and are attached on either
side of the uterus at one
end and the other end is
open in the abdomen. The
length of each Fallopian
tube is about 10cm.When
the ovum or egg is
released from the ovary, it
is picked up by Fallopian
tube through which it
moves into the uterus. If
sperms are present in the
Fallopian tubes, the ovum
is fertilized and the
resulting embryo is transmitted to the uterus where it is embedded. In short, we can say that
Fallopian tubes are channels through which the eggs from the ovaries travel to the uterus. In
Tubectomy the tubes are blocked or divided to prevent the eggs from entering the uterus. This
prevents any future pregnancies to occur after the surgical procedure.
Even if you follow a
diligent home care
routine, regular
check-ups with a
dental professional
are still a must. Your
dentist can watch for
early signs of decay,
gum disease, oral
cancer, or other
dental problems and
take appropriate
action. In addition,
professional
cleaning rids your
teeth of calcified
plaque, called
calculus or tartar,
that can build up in
hard-to-reach places.
Finally, your dentist
can spot clues to
whether oral problems are actually symptoms of other diseases in the body. For most people, two
check-ups per year are sufficient. But if you have special problems or if youre at high risk for
conditions such as periodontal disease, your dentist may recommend that you come in as frequently
as every three months. A routine visit will include a professional cleaning, an exam, and possibly
X-rays. Your dentist should also discuss your health history, asking about your past dental problems,
allergies, medication use, drug reactions, recent illnesses, and chronic diseases.
While for most of us
getting a health check-
up is on us to do list, its
often lost on us for one
reason or another, until
we fall sick and the
doctor asks us to
undergo one. We
believe individuals
should get a health
check-up done on a
regular basis to solidify
their good health and
wellness. Let us
elaborate our
perspective with the
following reasons.

Many Diseases do not

have major symptoms
until its too late. The
mild symptoms might
get ignored in our busy
lives. Getting a health check-up is like looking for that first mouse in the house before it breeds
and lays havoc to hygiene at home. As we will not ignore the first mouse in the house when we
see one, similarly potentially high risks to our health, might not be visible until we get experts to
look for them. These are the three key advantages of getting a health check-up

You know the condition or state of your health. Health check-up clears the ambiguity
around status of your health, in a way empowering all of us with the information.
You can prevent diseases that may be in their early stages
You can get a preventive treatment/ care to of a disease whose symptoms might not have
shown up yet
4.4.4 Social Media Presence

We designed the Facebook page for Lions Club of Bangalore South and created a social media
awareness campaign for Free health check-up, Vasectomy, Tubectomy etc.

Why use social media to promote your

work?

It will help you reach out to potential

donors, social workers and other users.
Prompt action to user feedback

Increases Website Traffic
CHAPTER 5

CHALLENGES
5.1 CHALLENGES

During the project duration certain challenges were faced. These were:

1. The major challenge was communication. The Staffs in Lions club of Bangalore South could
communicate only in Kannada. This caused a lot of hindrance for requirement elicitation.
2. The next challenge was the work timings. The work timings were from morning 9:00 am to
4:00 pm and Sundays were holidays. The work timings clashed with college hours.
3. Another challenge faced was people resistant. The Staffs were not comfortable to accept the
changes or transformation of the processes.
