Grade 5/6 Course Math
Title/Focus

PROGRAM OF STUDY OUTCOMES

3. Demonstrate an understanding of factors and multiples by:
determining multiples and factors of numbers less than 100 identifying prime and composite
numbers
solving problems using multiples and factors.
[CN, PS, R, V]

9. Explain and apply the order of operations, excluding exponents, with and without technology
(limited to whole numbers).
[C, CN, ME, PS, T] [ICT: C62.4, C62.7]
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson students will be able to:
1. Communicate using a mathematical vocabulary.
2. Follow a list of steps to solve two digit problems using the box and lattice method.

Create a worksheet

PROCEDURE
Introduction Time
Get someone to hand out math books when we get back from gym.
Put your hand up if you can do double-digit multiplication?
Write out on the board _ x _ + _
What is a factor: any whole number that divides exactly into it.
5 min
Multiple: Is the result of multiplying that number with a whole number.
(11:20)
Product: when two factors are combined to give a product.
Show them 2 multiplication examples using the style they (and I) have done.
(Hand out rulers during this time)

Body Time
Box 1) On a new page in your notebooks write the title multi 15 min
multiplication digit multiplication (11:35)
2) Introduce the box multiplication.
Do an example with them and show them on the
overhead. With the steps.
When drawing a box use your rulers and go 6 rows
down and 4 fingers wide. (Have notes already written
out and hide it)
2
3) Do 2 where we work together on the overhead.
4) Do these 3 on your own and in 5 minutes we will go over
them as a class.

Lattice 1) Introduce the lattice multiplication.

multiplication Do the steps and explain it out to them
2) Do 2 where we work together on the overhead. 15 min
3) Do 3 on your own and in 5 minutes we will go over it (11:50)
together as a class.

Worksheet Students will complete the worksheet. If there is

extra time
Conclusion Time
We will continue this afternoon with the worksheet.
