Background
magic

Magic, a concept used to describe a mode of rationality or

way of thinking that looks to invisible forces to influence
events, effect change in material conditions, or present
the illusion of change.

Magic, is a theatrical art in which a magician

performs illusions that make the impossible seem
possible.

In this type of magic as entertainment, the spectators

know that the magician is not actually using supernatural
powers. Nevertheless, even though they may try to watch
the magician's every move to discover how the magic is
done, in a successful trick they are amazed, unable to
discern the secret.
history

Magic as entertainment also has ancient roots. There are

Egyptian records, for example, giving details of magic
performances before Pharaoh Khufu (Cheops), who died in
the 25th century BC. In various places through out the
history the art in some form or the other have been
practiced for various purposes. Traveling entertainers, such
as jugglers and other wonder workers, were able to
perform before royalty, nobility, and even bishopsif not
always for the public. By the 16th century professional
Architectural thesis
magicians were doing card tricks, reading minds, and
making objects disappear. Public performances of magic
took place outdoors at carnivals, fairs, and markets. By
the 18th century magic as entertainment was well
established.

Asian religious traditions such as Hinduism, Buddhism,

and Daoism teach that material life is illusory. This mode
of rationality focuses on understanding the principles and
spiritual forces that lie behind physical experience.

The point of demonstrations by street magicians

and snake charmers in India is to show the illusory
quality of material reality in order to draw
attention to the universal, timeless, and cosmic.

Purposeful deception in magic is thus used to illustrate

the deceptiveness of human apprehensions of reality.
conclusion
The study of magic as a distinct cultural phenomenon has
a long history in anthropological, sociological, and
historical studies.

Magic, like religion and science, is thus a part of a

cultures total worldview.India bestowed with many
magicians who have made distinction in the field world
wide eg.

P.C.Sorcar, GopiNath Muthukad, Asim Khan etc.

methodology

school of magic-proposed by Gov. of

Kerela.

The art of magic as taught at the School of Magic will be

purely theatrical. Any other connotations that the word
magic may have do not apply to the entertaining art
form which comprises the basis of the innovative
education.

The school will provide a place where magic theatrical

performing arts are taught as an extracurricular activity.
But at another level, the School of Magic is so much more
than this.

It will be a place where young people are:

Nurtured in a positive, uplifting, caring environment

Educated not only in the magic theatrical performing
arts, but also in social and life skills.
Inspired by amazing magicians, performers and other
students.
Empowered to use their unique set of skills to open
new horizons.

It also provide a safe, supportive, and inspiring place to

work on magic with students of all skill levels and
interests. The unique education offered will benefit in

Background education system and

environment for children

The Government of India has envisaged to establish quite

a number of school in various parts of the country. There
are various schemes floated providing education for all.
But the monotonous pattern of teaching and learning has
not given much stimulus in the over all development of
the child.
Many philosophers, educationist, professors have written
about the incompleteness in the education system of
India.
So what does it lack???
The early teaching Tradition of learning followed was the
Gurukul System . Where the child was made to learn in
an open environment under the tree, into the field
observing and embibing the the knowledge bestowed by
the nature.
But the pattern gradually changed with course of time
due to political and social issues. And the kids were made
to focus and learn within the boundaries of the
classroom.
The building of todays school offers nothing to develop
the child holistically. Has there been any measures
taken to design the school buildings such that it
too teaches..???
The human brain is divided into two parts- one concerned
with logic and reasoning and the other with Creativity
and imagination.
Children are being taught more purposely to
develop the logical side of the brain but what
about the other part..???
Architectural thesis
Isnt there any need to make child creative along with
intelligence..?? More over ,World is facing so many
problems be it terrorism ,Pollution , Conflicts, depletion of
energy resources, Shouldnt we instill the concern and
care for society ,environment among children from the
aim very beginning..???

to provide environment to
children for their holistic
development

To instill in them the concern and care for

Society Humanity
Harmonious living Environment

To develop the logical and creative side of the brain.

To set an example of better education.
The building to act as a teacher for students.
objective

to implement the methodology of

BUILDING AS THE LEARNING AID for
the holistic development of child
The building would be design such that it itself
becomes the sourece of learning. Some projects in India
have been executed based on this concept, but it mostly
offers the knowledge of Mathematics, science and
environment, but my project will serve the purpose of
development of the creative side of the brain too.

thrust

BUILDING AS THE LEARNING AID

requirements
Building as learning aid (BALA) is about maximising the
learning value of the school space. A range of learning
situations and materials can be actively used as a
learning resource by innovatively treating school spaces
(classroom, circulation spaces, outdoors, natural
environment) and their constituent built elements (floor,
wall, ceiling, door, windows, furniture, open ground).
This resource can complement the teaching process and
supplement textbook information. A three-dimensional
space can offer a unique setting for a child to learn
because it can introduce a multiple sensory experience
into the otherwise black and white world of textbooks
and blackboard. It can make abstract concepts more

real for the child. Dimensions, textures, shapes, angles and
movement can be used to communicate some basic
concepts of language, science, mathematics and
environment and to make learning a truly memorable
experience for children
