Observation:

The experiment is based on the circuit of Figure 26-1. The starting current of the DC compound
generator is at 1.8A with a high speed of 1612 and 0 torque. The trend of the values for current
are increasing and increasing values of torque as well. However, the speed of the motor is
decreasing. As observed on the graph, it has a slope going down since the relationship of torque
with speed is inversely proportional. When the motor was set to 3A, the motor slowly moves
and develops a 45V voltage and torque of 12.5 lb-in. from the values gathered, the full load
current is at 2.8 A, speed of 1195rpm and a torque of 9.

Conclusion:

The starting current for a DC compound to move is 1.8A and a full load current of 2.8A. DC
compound motors have both series as well as shunt winding. A compound wound DC motor or
rather a DC compound motor falls under the category of self excited motors, and is made up of
both series the field coils S1 S2 and shunt field coils F1 F2 connected to the armature winding.
Compound-wound motors are used whenever it's necessary to obtain a speed regulation and
torque characteristic not obtainable with either a shunt or a series motor. The compound
motor has a normal shunt winding and a series winding on each field pole. As in the compound-
wound dc generator, the series and shunt windings may be connected in long shunt, or short
shunt. In a compound motor, it has both series winding and parallel winding. A winding is
connected in series with the armature as in a Series DC motor. Another winding is connected in
shunt with the armature as in a Shunt DC motor. This combination presents double advantage
of having the torque characteristics of a series motor and the constant speed characteristic of a
shunt motor in one compound wound motor. A DC compound motor is more stable than a
series motor because it has both the characteristics of a shunt and series motor. Some of the
industrial applications include drives for passenger and freight elevators, stamping presses,
rolling mills, and metal shears.
