Getting there
Professional qualification is a combination of your academic achievements,
your work experience and an assessment.
And whatever stage youre at, we make your path as straightforward as possible.
Academic qualifications
To become an incorporated or chartered engineer, youll normally need an accredited qualification. This ensures that you
have an appropriate level of academic learning.
You can find out if your course is accredited for the level you want using the course search tool on our website.
ice.org.uk/coursesearch
If your course isnt accredited, dont panic there are lots of other options. Our membership support team will help you
choose the right one and let you know what to do next.
Work experience
Initial professional development (IPD) is where you develop the work-based experience you need for IEng MICE
or CEng MICE.
The quickest and most effective way to complete your IPD is on an ICE Training Scheme. This is a structured training
programme run by your employer that will set you on the fast track.
You can check if your employer runs a scheme using the approved employer search tool on our website.
ice.org.uk/approvedemployers
If it doesnt, you can sign up for ICEs unique mentor-supported training. This is similar to the ICE Training Scheme,
except you manage your own training with support from a mentor.
Whichever option you proceed with, well provide support throughout your training and a handy online tool to
record your progress.
Of course, you may already have the work-based experience you need. If thats the case, you wont need any more
training to progress.
Professional Review
The Professional Review is the final stage in your professional qualification. Its an assessment where you demonstrate
that you have the attributes of either IEng MICE or CEng MICE.
The review is made up of two main parts a report and a review day.
The report goes into detail about your professional experience, including the work youve done and the responsibility
youve had.
Then its your review day. This includes an interview with experienced civil engineers (your reviewers),
where you discuss your report and demonstrate your abilities.
Were here to help you prepare for every aspect of your review. We run special workshops, seminars and training
courses, many of which are available as webinars.
You can find out more about the Professional Review on our website.
