Instructional Objectives:

Knowledge:
Students will...
1. Learn about Oral Tradition and how it is important to Aboriginal Culture
2. Deepen understanding about significance of Caribou to communities in North

Skill:
Students will...
1. Create a drawing to illustrate a key theme they draw from reading

Key Questions:
What is the significance of Caribou to aboriginal communities?
Was this a true story or a fictional story?
What is bannock?
What is the significance of the dance that the brothers performed?

Materials:
Crayons, Paper, Caribou Song book,

Preparation:
Record Caribou Song book on SeeSaw so students can listen whenever they
want/appropriate

Lesson Procedure:
Intro/Review
1. Its that time once again my friends, here we go with social! Im super excited!
Lets start by doing a real quick review of what we talked about last week in
social studies. I missed it on Thursday, but I heard you guys had an awesome job
at the games! What did you guys think about all those different games? (Discuss)
Wow, awesome! Do you guys know why those games are important to the Inuit
people? Can anyone guess? Turn to your elbow partner and talk about some ideas
you have! (Let them talk for a little bit, bring it back) 5-7 Min
2. So, those games were developed by the people to help them to form survival skills
when they lived out on the land and in the bush! For example, the kneeling jump!
That was so you could get out of the way quickly if a predator snuck up behind
you. 1 Min
Transition
3. Ive got something a little bit different planned for you guys today. I brought a
very cool book from the university to read to you! Its relates really closely to a
lot of the things weve been talking about in Social these last few weeks! So, lets
all move over to the carpet and sit so you can see the pictures in the book! 2 Min

4. (Read Caribou Song: Stop at multiple points along the way to answer questions
and illustrate what certain unfamiliar terms and concepts mean/represent) 10 Min
5. Okay, what an awesome book! What do you guys think the main message from
this book is? What was the theme? What is the author trying to say? (Facilitate
discussion, if students are restless, back to table spots) 5-7 Minutes
6. Okay, heres what we are going to do next! (Write directions on board) I want you
guys to draw me a picture that represents what you thought the theme/message
from the book was! Just like we just talked about! You can use pencil crayons or
wax crayons, make sure you write your name on the back. Green and Yellow
tables can go get their pencil boxes now, Red and Blue can go when they get
back. (Circulate and assist as needed) Post to SeeSaw as they come up and Finish:

Assessment:

Formative Assessment: Review Material from prior lessons, check that students can
recall information and concepts critical to learning

Formative Assessment: Monitor discussion and pay attention for critical information and
concepts, discussion will be clear indicator of whether or not students grasp concept

Formative Assessment: Check that students comprehend key themes and are able to
articulate them through drawings
