INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION ESSENTIAL VI

The topic regarding incorporating professionalism plan ties in with the baccalaureate

Essential VI because professionalism goes further than ones personal appearance, it involves

communication skills that are effective, positive attitudes that are non-judgmental and

interpersonal as well as intra-personal interactions that are effective in order to build effective

health care. As discussed in this essential #5 nurses have to demonstrate appropriate

teambuilding and collaborative strategies when working with inter-professional teams. Among

the specifics of baccalaureate essential VI is an understanding that communication and

cooperation among health professionals is important in providing high quality patient care. As

inter-professional collaboration between specialties grows, patient outcomes improve, portraying

the role of the baccalaureate prepared nurse as integral to the healthcare team

Positive attitude can improve relationships between colleagues, managers and other team

members. In order to achieve collaboration with others time management, building clinical skills

and advancement in education play a big roll in the nursing career, as these help to optimize

patient outcomes and help in building the nursing profession. Giving patient centered care that

includes the family and being the patient's advocate is vital as this shows the essentials point

from #6 that discusses importance of being an advocate for high quality and safe patient care as a

member of the inter-professional team.

Exampler

In the professionalism incorporation plan it was discussed the importance of inter-

personal and intrapersonal communication in enhancing the health care team building and

empowering nurses as advocates. When colleagues can understand each others cultural and

spiritual views, learning to respect boundaries will facilitate more open conversations by

avoiding personal bias. Effective communication empowers the health care team to deliver

patient focused care. I believe ongoing education supports skills and improves knowledge in

order to maintain professional environment that provides quality care for broader patient

population. Being aware of one's limit and knowing the difference of compassionate care to

professionalism is very difficult.

Inter-professionalism and intra-professionalism gets affected when the balance has been

lost leading to more communication breakdowns and medication errors (nsna.org).

Professionalism in nursing does not only impact communication regarding skills and knowledge

but also impacts the view of the public. Recognizing inter-dependency while sharing

responsibility and accountability will improve the health care system and improve patient out

come (nsna.org). Learning to advocate for one another as we advocate for patients by being

leaders will allow nurses to view ourselves as professionals and not just caring people.

Professionalism in nursing also affects the relationship between colleagues by allowing them to

learn from one another and create understanding of the nursing role. It enhances the bond even

outside of the workplace.

Reflection

Portraying positive attitude and having an open mind for change can help provide best

health care to broad patient population. It was shown that gaining knowledge about patient's and

their family's spiritual and cultural views of health and sickness can improve the communication

skill one holds. In order to display an exceptional skills and give effective care understanding

ones background plays a big roll. Positive attitude can enhance the acceptance of other's opinions

and allow better learning of new methods in order to strengthen collaboration among different

team members.

Discussing the changes in health care, government, laws and how all of it impacts our

practice vs our cultural views can be a grounding factor in the professional journey of nursing

and can help in team building. It is essential to review one's own belief regarding ethics and legal

issues as it relates to patients and co-workers. Nursing is an ongoing profession is always

changing in practice and it's views (nsna.org). As a professional nurse I believe in pulling all the

resources in order to enhance my clinical and personal skills in order to increase my knowledge

base as informed advocate. It is important for the patients and families to view the nursing team

as critical thinkers that are educated and competent, who want to add to the community's health

by standing next to them and advocating for them. Nursing has opened opportunities to meet

people from various back grounds and cultures. Holding an open mind and a positive attitude

will allow better communication and bring improved collaboration among team members

(aannet.org). Effective communication can enhance the interpersonal and intrapersonal teams in

health care by providing clear information that will enhance the patient's out come and improve

the health care system and support the issues discussed in the baccalaureate Essential VI.
