Introduction
Approximately 44 cities and towns in India are
covered under City Gas Distribution System
presently. In order to facilitate the expansion of
cleaner fuel, the Government has allocated 100%
domestic gas supply for City Gas Usage. PNGRB
contemplated a phased roll-out for development of
city gas networks in the areas where gas and natural
gas pipeline connectivity is available. These
geographical areas will include the proximate small
town or village. Under the bid round ( 5th& 6th ),
PNGRB is likely to roll out City Gas Distribution
Network in 46 new districts in 2015-2016. Further
GAIL has announced its intent to establish a City
Gas Distribution (CGD) network in Patna and Gaya
during the rst phase of its Haldia - Jagdishpur
'energy highway' gas pipeline project as part of
Governments projection of CGD network in 200+
cities in another 5 Years.
Prioritising the CGD sector for gas allocation and the
latest announcements of network roll out plans have
enthused the investors and new entrants. However,
there remain the operational challenges like hurdles
to lay pipelines in crowded localities, current
regulatory and policy dynamics and pricing. These
