1.0 Introduction

This project is an integration project with Design Studio 5. We are assigned to design a
community library in Medan Pasar, Kuala Lumpur and we are required to integrate our
understanding regarding the principles of lightings in relation with the context of our
community design which is an urban infill site. The objective is to show our understanding
about the principles of artificial lighting and daylight strategies (PSALI) in our final design,
also to prove our ability to solve problems in relation to sustainability issues during our
design process.

3.0 Space A: Window Seat Reading Area

Space A is located at the west side on the first floor. The space is open at the back and
flank by 2 walls by side. While exposed to sunlight during daytime, timber claddings are
added to filter the sunlight entering the space. Illuminance condition is suitable for
viewing and casual reading, but improvement can be made to improve the overly
exposed condition.
3.1 Daylight Calculation

Area of the windows (m2), W 9.9

Total area of the internal surfaces (m2), A Floor area + Wall area, Window area
=(11.8x5.1) + (20.4+12.4+14.4) + 9.9
=117.28
Glass transmittance corrected for dirt, T 0.6
Visible sky angle in degrees from the 60
center of the window,
Average reflectance of area A, R 0.5
Average Daylight Factor, DF WxT
A (1-R)

= 9.9 x 0.6(60)
117.28 (1-0.5)

=0.084x72

=6.048

Zone DF (%) Distribution

Very bright >6 Large (Including thermal and glare problem)
Bright 3-6 Good
Average 1-3 Fair
Dark 0-1 Poor

Daylight Factor (DF) = Internal Illuminance, Ei x 100%

External Illuminance, Ee

6.048 = Ei x 100%
20000

Ei = 1209.6 lux
Luminance Level (lux) Example
120,000 Brightest sunlight
110,000 Bright sunlight
20,000 Shade illuminated by entire clear blue sky, mid-day
1000-2000 Typical overcast day, mid-day
400 Sunrise/sunset on clear day (ambient illumination)
<200 Extreme of darkest storm clouds, mid-day
40 Fully overcast, sunrise/sunset
<1 Extreme of darkest storm cloud, sunrise/sunset

Analysis
The selected space which is the window seat reading area on first floor has daylight factor
of 6.05% which is consider fairly good distribution of light due to the large window facing
the front faade to provide natural lighting for better reading condition.
3.2 Lumen Method Calculation
The sun shines in the morning from the east and in the afternoon, the sun will be at
above of the building. The chosen space located at the west part of the building, thus
the natural in the light would be insufficient for reading activities. To improve this
condition, recessed LED luminaire can be installed.

3.3 Lighting Design Proposal

PSALI Light Contour

There are 20 light fittings in this space to achieve 400 lux which are required by
MS 1525. The lights are controlled by 2 switches, where row 2 can be switched off
during the day to reduce electricity usage.
4.0 Space B: Reading Lounge

Space B is located at the center part on the first floor. The space is partitioned by walls
and book shelf at 4 directions. Due to the location of this space, bringing in sufficient
natural light for reading activities are difficult if simply rely on the skylight, thus artificial
lighting fixture are required.

PSALI Light Contour

The reading lounge have opening however it is

not sufficient to bring in enough sunlight
especially the back area of the space. Hence,
the PSALI scheme here is to light up the inner
part especially on a gloomy day to achieve
comfort level for reading activities.
