23. A steel rod 15m long is at a temperature of 15oC. find the free expansion of the length,
when the temperature is raised to 65oC. Find the temperature stress produced when (i) the
expansion of the rod is prevented (ii) The rod is permitted to expand by 6mm.

25. Derive the shear stress produced in a circular shaft subjected to torsion-
26. A cantilever 2 metres long is of rectangular section 100mm wide and 200mm deep it
ca:ries a uniformly distributed load of 2KN per unit metre length for a length of 1.25
metres from the frxed end a point load of 0.8 KN of the free end. Find the deflection at the
free end.

27. Calculate the safe compressive load on a hollow cost iron column (one end rigidly fixed
and other hinged) of l5cm external diameter, 10cm internal diameter and lOm in length.
Use Euler's formula with a factor of safety of 5, and E:95 KN/mm2 .

28. a. A steel rod 20mm in diameter passes centrally through a steel tube of 25mm internal
diameter and 30mm extemal diameter. The tube is 800 mm long and is closed by rigid
washers of negligible thickness which are fastened by nuts threaded on the rod. The nut are
tightened until the compressive load on the tube is 20KN. Calculate the stresses in the tube
and the rod. Find the increase in these stresses when one nut is tightened by one quarter of
a tum relative to the other. There are 4 threads per lOmm take E:2x105 N/mm2.

b. An element in a stressed
material has tensile stress of 500 MN/m2 and a compressive stress
of 350 MN/m2 acting on two mutually perpendicular planes and equal shear stresses of 100
MN/m2 on these planes. Find principal stresses position of the principal plane and
maximum shearing stress using Mohr's circle and check the answer analytically.
29. a. A simple supported beam of length 10m, carries the uniformly distributed load and trvo
point loads as shown in below. Draw the S.F. and B.M. diagram for the beam. Also
calculate the maximum bending moment.

b. A T-shaped cross section of a beam shown in below is subjected to a vertical shear force of
l00KN. Calculate the shear stress of the neutral axis and at the junction of the web and the
flange. Moment of inertia about the horizontal neutral axis is 0.0001134m4, also draw the
shear stress distribution.

30. a. A solid cylindrical shaft is to tansmit 300KW power at 100 rpm. (a) If the shear stress is
not to exceed 80 N/mm2. Find its diameter. (b) What percent saving in weight would be
obtained if this shaft is replaced by a hollow one whose internal diameter equals to 0.6 of
the extemal diameter, the length, the material and and maximum shear stress being the
same?

A hollow shaft of diameter ratio 3/8 is required to transmit 600KW at 110 rpm, the
maximum torque beng 20o/o greater than the mean. The shear stress is not to exceed 63
MN/m2 and the twist in a length of 3m not to exceed 1.4 degrees. Calculate the maximum
extemal diameter satisfying these conditions. (8 Marks)
11. A solid steel shaft has to transmit75 KW at 200 rpm. Taking allowable shear stress as
70 N/mm2, find suitable diameter for the shaft, if the maximum torque transmitted at each
revolution exceeds the mean by 30%. (4 Marks)

31. a. A cantilever of 3 metres length and of uniform rectangular cross section l50mm wide and
300mm deep is loaded with a 30kN at its free end. In addition to this it carries a uniformly
distributed load of 20kN per metre run over its entire length, calculate (i)Maximum slope
and maximum deflection (ii) The slope and deflection at 2 metres from the free end.

b. A beam of length 6m is simply supported at its ends and carries two point loads of 48KN
and 40KN at a distance of lm and 3m respectively from the left suppon. Find,
(i) Deflection under each load (ii) Maximum deflection and (iii) The point of rvhich
maximum deflection occurs. Take E:2xlF N/mm2 andl:lix106 mma.

32. a. A hollow cylindrical cast iron column is 4m long with both ends fixed. Determine the
minimum diameter of the column if it has to carry a safe load of 250KN witlr a factor of
safety of 5. Take the intemal diameter as 0.8 times the external diameter. Take
o"=550N/mmz *d o = I in Rankine's formula.

b. A cylindrical shell 90cm long and 20cm internal diameter having thickness of metal as
8mm is frlled with fluid at atmospheric pressure. If an additional 20cm3 of fluid is pumped
into the cylinder, find (i) The pressure exerted by the tluid on the cylinder and (ii) The
hoop stress induced.
