RAK 232- PRINCIPLES OF ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

ASSIGNMENT 1

CUBE, SPHERE, CONE, CYLINDER, and PYRAMID are some of the

basic geometric forms that could be adopted and transformed into
various architectural creations in which we live to admire through
times.

The adoptions of a Single Form or combination of Forms, create

Spaces for various functions and purposes.

Spaces are created with different sizes, scale, area and volumes,
solid and voids, positive and negative, through and
anthropometrical references.

Balance, harmony, rhythm, pattern, hierarchy, repetition and

symmetrical are references methods used in connecting and
combining spaces whilst, references base and datum, scale, color,
texture, light and shadows, focal and vanishing points, Lines, Planes
are some design references.

The words such as Transformation, Collusion, Monolithic, Bionic,

Organic, Symbols and icons, Metaphoric and indigenious, are some
of the vocabulary used in the Architectural Design output.

The Modular system and post and lintel are the common reference
to the construction techniques.

1. You are required to produce a built form, a shelter for a certain

purpose, using any basic geometric forms (max 2 types) and
combination of planes. This humanistic form should translate
the above vocabulary as much as possible for any end user to
have a renowned experience of being in and outside the
spaces of the built form.
Grid need to be drawn on the built, for case of
translating scale, and construction methods
A scale model of a base A3 size (hard board or plywood)
and built form of height max 20cm.
Materials to be used for the built form- balsa wood and
Perspex sheets only.

2. You are also required to produce:

An understanding of each of the terms above
A written philosophy of your built- form on an A3 size
mounting board (Potrait orientation), that refers to the
vocabulary use in the Design Principles. Good graphic
illustrations are required.
3. For documentation and save keeping purposes, you are
needed to record on CD your model and the written
philosophy.
4. This whole exercise is to be done in a group of 6 persons,
sharing opinion, labour and cost.
