Physician Assistant

The career I have chosen to research is physician assistant. I have an interest in this Commented [1]: This should not be capitalized
throughout your essay unless.... see this link

career because I like and want to help others. I feel like this career would be a very rewarding job assistant-the-definitive-guide/

with doing so. According to Physician Assistant Edu, the duties of this career would consist of:

ordering and interpreting tests, getting the patient's medical history, conducting physical exams,

diagnosing and treating illnesses, and assisting in surgeries. However, these duties depend on the

setting, their experience, their speciality, and state they work in. Physician Assistants can work in

many practices such as: family medicine, pediatrics, geriatrics, oncology, emergency medicine,

and many more. Most PAs work full time in physicians offices, hospitals, outpatient clinics,

and other healthcare settings. Physician assistants may work nights, weekends, or holidays. They

may also be on call, meaning that they must be ready to respond to a work request with little

notice(BureauofLaborStatistics).

To become a Physician Assistant (PA) you need to attend an undergraduate and graduate

school. You typically need to complete at least two years of college coursework in basic and

behavioral sciences before applying to a PA program. According to the APAA website, the

majority of PA programs have the following prerequisites: Chemistry, Physiology, Anatomy,

Microbiology, Biology. PA school is highly competitive. Many PA schools require prior

healthcare experience such as, a paramedic, phlebotomist, registered nurse, emergency room

technician, surgical tech, certified nursing assistant (CNA), etc. Most students going into PA
Downing 2

school have a bachelors degree and about three years of healthcare experience before entering a

program. Most PA programs are around three years and youll receive your Master's degree.

These programs will include classroom instruction and clinicals. Youll complete more than

2,000 hours of clinical rotations, with an emphasis on primary care in ambulatory clinics,

physician offices and acute or long-term care facilities. Once youve graduated from a PA

program, you can take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam administered by the

National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. Once you pass the PANCE and

maintain your certification, may use the title Physician Assistant-Certified or PA-C. Before you

start the practice you have to obtain your state license. All states require you pass the PANCE.

You then need to maintain your certification to do this you need to complete 100 hours of

continuing medical education credits every two years and take a recertification exam every 10

years. (APPA)

Physician Assistants make a decent amount of money. The job outlook is always rising

and its always going to be something everyone needs so youll always be almost guaranteed a

job. According to the Bureau of labor statistics, employment of physician assistants is projected

to grow 37 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations. As

demand for healthcare services grows, physician assistants will be needed to provide care to

patients. The average hourly pay for a PA is 48.79, the average salary is $101,480 per year. The

pay can vary and change depending on the setting and where you work.

I have been accepted into the five colleges Ive applied to. These colleges are Shawnee

State located in Portsmouth, Marshall University located in West Virginia, Wright State located

in Springfield, Ohio University-Chillicothe located in Chillicothe, and Ohio Christian located in

Circleville. All these colleges offer the prerequisites it takes to get the Bachelors degree to go on
Downing 3

to PA school. Wright State University is the only college I've applied to that I can complete my

undergraduate and graduate degrees.

My plan and goals are to attend the Shawnee State University. That way I can live off

campus and keep my job in Waverly. I plan to take the biological health science classes. Once I

get my associates degree in health sciences which takes two years, I can get a job in a hospital

and typically the hospital will pay for you to go back and get a better education. Then I can

attend college for another two years in hopes of getting my bachelors degree. Afterward, I can

work in the Hospital as a RN. I then should have already been accepted in a PA program. I will

go back to graduate school for approximately another four years. Once I graduate from PA

school I need to get my license to be a registered physician assistant. Commented [2]: C

According to the Shawnee State University Website, the cost of attendance to

undergraduate school at Shawnee State would approximately be $15,600. The tuition for instate

is $7,944 for one year. Room and board would be $3,744, although I plan on living at home.

Books would cost around $1,200. The transportation to and from school would be around $800

for gas. The loan fees would cost $76. Personal expenses would be almost $2,000. The total cost

for four years should be $62,400. Depending on scholarships and financial student aid this could

change. According to Financial Aid calculator, Payments each month on these loans would be

$718 with a total of 120 payments. At the end of the payment plan it would cost me $86,173 with

paying over $23,000 in interest fees.

According to The Wright State University Website, the cost of attendance to graduate

school at Wright State would approximately be $15,080 a year. This includes the tuition and

books. To attend the school for four years it would cost around $60,320. From the Financial Aid Commented [3]: But this would not include room &
board which you would need to go there, right?
calculator your monthly loan payment would be $694.16 with a total of 120 payments. The total
Downing 4

youd pay at the end of your payment plan would be $83,299 with paying almost $23,000 in

interest fees.

Overall being that both loan payments would take 10 years each to pay off totalling 20

years. The amount of debt youd be in would be almost $170,000. With monthly payments being

$1412 a month. Is that worth it for the career path chosen? My debt would be more than I make a

year, and I would be doing that for 10 years. Could I survive when I would have other bills to

pay? I would make approximately around $8,300 a month. So, yes, I feel that it would be worth

it in the end. The job would be very rewarding and its a selfless job. You have to have the heart,

and dedication to succeed in this career because its not easy.
