Public Forum Case Outline: Negative

Writing the Constructive

By: Max Lukas, Will Lukas, and Blake Kobrin

Opening: Hello and good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. We will be discussing reasons how
technology is so harmful to the world. As technology gets more advanced, hackers also get more
advanced and we right now can be watched and heard from hackers from only a couple of miles
away to different continents. We negate the resolution that states on balance, the benefits of the
internet of things outweigh the harms of and personal privacy
__________________________________________________________________
Definitions:

Internet of things - A network of everyday devices, appliances, and other objects equipped with
computer chips and sensors that can collect and transmit data through the Internet.
Personal privacy-The state of being apart from other people or concealed from their view
1. Main Argument One: Security issues
a. (Sub point A) Point: National
Evidence Russia hacking the elections is one of the most talked about
issues of Trump's election. The russians were called out by putting more
(fake) votes for trump. If so, it caused a chain reaction that changed the
election. (Terrorism is another security factor that is being dealt with as
we speak cause it can happen anywhere, anytime and we have to be
prepared & secured so future attacks cant happen.
Explanation Well If Russians can hack the elections and control who gets
to be elected to presidency in the US, then they can do it to other
countries and find out confidential information. So that means that we
need to be putting more time and effort into building a better secured
cybersecurity cause ww1 & ww2 were all fought with guns this war is
fought with coding and hacking. For terrorism to hack into the US
embassy or pentagon to gather important information about terrorist we
know and future operations to eliminate them would be catastrophic. It
would be a game favoring the terrorists. As Hamody jasim (My Dad)
says The biggest weapons that terrorists use is social media. There's so
much more that can harm us and in so many ways that harm us than
actual helping us. technology is a weapon that we need to control cause
there's only 2 ways it can go, Them or Us
(Sub point B) Point: Personal
Evidence (Its that time of year that we are going around getting gifts for
family. Well what happens when your doing some shopping a few days
til christmas and your bank account goes from a couple hundred to the
negatives when you didnt purchase anything. That is the worst fear of
hacking in this time of year. An article form The Guardian says that: The
motive for the attack is not clear, but Lizard Squad had apparently
threatened to target both networks at Christmas, using a now deleted
Twitter account to describe itself as the next-generation Grinch. A
new Twitter account had amassed 150,000 followers by midday on 26
December, seemingly encouraging gamers to follow it on Twitter to
prevent further attacks. Lizard squad was one of the biggest threats in
2014 that clearly said that they are going to help protect the kids from
hackers and they come right to them.
Explanation hackers is becoming a very big issue for both the people and
governments. Hackers can get very personal information like your driver
licence and find where you live, change information on a online resume
for your dream job and not get it cause it has false information. Lastly
they can hack your computer and get your information even if it has a
anti hack software and turned off. Hackers can easily be part of our lives
and have us not know it.
2. Main Argument Two: Technology is advancing at a rate that is too fast for our security
measures to keep up with
. (Sub point A) Home Security
Evidence In the 2015 in the US a property crime was committed every 3.9
seconds. And approximately 25 property crimes were reported per every
1000 people. The total property crimes reported in 2015 totaled about 8
million.
Explanation Every 3.9 seconds there is property crime commuted in the
US and no matter how many precautions we take it is not slowing down
the theft. Even though we have several different home security
companies that should be protecting our home. What I'm saying is that
these home security companies aren't helping stop crime but they could
increase crime rates by giving people something to hack into to check if
you're home.
a. (Sub point B) New Viruses
Evidence In the year 2000 there was 50,000 computer viruses. That
number has been and is still growing very rapidly. It was claimed that in
2005 there was about 103,000 computer viruses.
Explanation If the number of computer viruses kept growing at a steady
rate that means by the year 2020 there will be approximately 209,000
computer viruses. A computer virus is a piece of code that has the
capability to corrupt a system or destroy data. If a viruses has the ability
to shutdown a system what's to say that people haven't been using them
to bypass a security system. With computer viruses at and all time high
we are not safe and neither is our privacy.
3. Main Argument Three: Identity Theft
. (Sub point A) Credit Card Theft
Evidence In 2017 and identity fraud study released research that found out
that $16 billion was stolen from 15.4 US consumers. That makes 13.1
million victims a year.
Explanation When somebody steals your identity they dont just do it for
fun they do it for a reason. Most times its to take advantage of a the
bank account that they now have access to. $16 billion is being stolen
from people in the US a year that is $16 billion that isnt being used by
the the hard working people that earned the money.
a. (Sub point B) Personal information
Evidence According to a study by microsoft the average user has 6.5
passwords each being shared across 3.9 different sites. Each user has
about 25 accounts that requires a password and types an average of 8
passwords a day.
Explanation Now a days everything is online based through different
websites which all require usernames and passwords to access your
account. This is meant to make you more secure but like most things it
just backfires and explodes in our face because people are able to hack
into your computer and take your usernames and passwords to all your
accounts. This gives them access to bank account and personal
documents that are for your eyes and your eyes only. When somebody
gets a hold of your username and password they can do almost anything
that they want from post inappropriate things online all the way to
stealing from your bank account. The study has proven that everybody
is using passwords today but not just that. They are also reusing
passwords. So if somebody hacks into a computer and steals your
username and password they can get into more than just one of your
accounts.

In conclusion me and my partners negate the resolution that states on balance, the benefits of the
internet of things outweigh the harms of and personal privacy. We negate this due to the
advancements that hackers are making to counter everything we due to secure our personal
privacy. We acknowledge all the benefits but in today's world we are not safe due to the
internet of things and we can not ignore this to the point where we don't address it and try to
make a change.
