INTRODUCTION

This paper aims at reporting and analyzing what was observed in the
classroom daily activities of English subject class. This paper is to complete the
final task of Theories and Principles in TESOL course supervised by Mrs. Sri Wuli
Fitrianti. The classroom observation itselves purposed to give clearance
implementation of Theories and Principles in TESOL, and teachers classroom
management that I have been learned in that course.

The observation was taken on Thursday, 2nd November 2017 at 11.00 WIB.
The teacher that was observed was a female named Cicilia Miming, S. Pd.. She has
been teaching English for 15 years in the school I observed. The teacher has a
Bachelor Degree of English Education program in Universitas Negeri Semarang.
The classroom observed was 7A class of SMP N 41 Semarang that is located at
Cepoko Utara, Gunung Pati, Semarang. There are 36 students with more girls than
boys in the classroom. The class was very bright and well decorated. The room had
a whiteboard, LCD projector, a set sound system, a fan, and an area for students
work. The teachers desk was placed in the front corner of the classroom so that she
could see all of the students from her desk. The students desks were arranged four
rows and five columns to the back. During the observation I sat in the back of the
classroom at an extra desk.

In order to observe, I had to put a letter to the office first. The letter was about
asking permission to observe English classroom activities. Then, the officer met me
with the Mrs. Miming who was willing for her class to be observed. We talked to
Mrs. Miming about our purpose then we made a date to do the observation. Besides
doing observation on Mrs. Mimings class, I also did an interview with Mrs.
Miming after the class was done. It was purposed to collect further information
about Mrs. Miming in her teaching English as a second language in that school and
got private information about Mrs. Miming. Unfortunately, I could not do an
interview with the students.
DESCRIPTION

During the hour observation I observed many different things in the

classroom. Because of traffic jam, we came late to the class. However the class
didnt start yet, so I came to the teachers office to call Mrs. Miming. Then the class
started immediately. Mrs. Miming started by greeting the students and asking the
students condition and continued by asked one student to lead pray and checked
the attendace list. After that, she started reviewing the lastweek material to the
students. When Mrs. Miming asked about lastweek materials there was no much
students that replying to the teacher. Only students who in the front line desks that
already get the attention to the lesson and the teacher.

Based on my interview, the learning objectives that day was: 1) students are
able to introduce themselves, and 2) students are able to differenciate their first
name and last name. Mrs. Miming introducing todays material by speaking to the
students in front of the class. Because Mrs. Miming wanted to use video from laptop
to deliver the material, she took times to set up the laptop, the projector, and the
sound systems. It tooks about 10 minutes to prepared the video because there was
no remote control for the sound systems so that some boys had to arrange desks and
climb up to turn on the sounds. Because of this, some students in the back line were
just lingering and making noise.

After the video was ready to played, the students got ready to watch the video.
They suddenly sat down, be quite, and staring at the LCD projector. Mrs. Miming
then played the video. The video was an audio recording video about how to
introduce ourselves with first name and last name that was taken from the internet.
The video gave an example to introduce and let the viewers to repeat the script. The
students was automatically repeat what the video said. For example when the
narrator of the video said My name is John Kennedy then the students
automatically repeat My name is John Kennedy. The whole video was all about
My name is ...(with full name); My first name is ....; My last name is .....
Mrs. Miming only sat on her desk and let the students watch and repeat. However
there still some students who were in the back line did not get attention to the repeat
the transcript and only lingering staring at the LCD projector. There were also some
students who kidding.

After the end of the video, Mrs. Miming stand up and come to the front line
desks and adding some explanation about introducing full name, first name, and
last name. She used codeswitching laguage which allow her to speak in English to
deliver the materials but using Bahasa to explain the materials. She practiced
introducing herself such as My name is Cicilia Miming, my first name is Cicilia
and my last name is Miming. Then he asked a students who was in the middle row
desks what her name is. The students who was aked then introduced herself as what
Mrs. Mimin practiced. In this section, Mrs. Miming used role play and teachers
questioning skills in teaching to know her students understanding of the materials.
And to make the students more understand about the materials and to make the
materials are easy to remember, Mrs. Miming applied drilling techniques. She
randomly choose some students to introduced themselves as what she had practiced.

After doing some practices, Mrs. Miming then asked the students to come
forward in front of the class one by one based on the absent list. The students was
asked to intoducing themselves their full name, first name, and the last name. Before
that, she turned off the LCD Projector first. The students then come forward one by
one. Almost of the students was able to introduce themselves fluently, but some
students did not. After the students introduce themselves Mrs. Miming then give
feedback in short expression such Good, Excellent, and ect. However there was
a student who couldnt say anything. He did not know what to do in the front of the
class and just keep quiet untill his friends helped him. Mrs. Miming then only said
to the other students that that was the example of a student who do not pay attention
to the materials without giving any punishment or advice for the student who did
not pay attention to the materials.

Also based on my observation, in all along the activities, Mrs. Miming did
not correct the students wrong pronunciation. During her teaching process she was
only sat down on her desk, playing video, adding a little explanation, give example
and asking the students to practice. She did not really commuicate to all the
students. She did not take care to the particular students who were noisy, disruptive,
and did not pay attention to her materials. It was like she only teach to them who
want to be taught. Mrs. Miming only focused on giving materials, though I think
she could more explore her students ability in English. She just used what question
in asking their students.

Even this was just a quite simple and easy material, some students still did
not mastered the materials well. It is because they were did not pay attention to the
materials and Mrs. Miming just let them. Because it was in the mid of the day, it
was so hot, tiring and because that was the last subject also could be the factor that
some students were lack their attention of studying. The overall teaching process
was only the teacher giving materials and the students do what the teacher said.
There was no communicative feedback from the both side. The students only
listening, repeating, and practicing without asking something. They seemed like
they were not curious about something or they just have been great in English.

To finish the class, Mrs. Miming asked the students to bring their family
pictures because the next meeting materials is introducing their family member.
Then Mrs. Miming closed the class by greeting without asking if there was a
question from her students.
ANALYSIS

There was so many things that I can learned from this classroom observation.
I was very surprised how crowd the students when Mrs. Miming explaining the
materials and how quiet the students when Mrs. Miming communicate to them. I
learned that teaching is a very complex activity - becoming a teacher is not just
delivering materials but more than that we are managing the classroom, giving
attention to whole parts of the class, and the hardest thing is to make sure that our
students are understand about the material together we build the students character.

Based from my observation, Mrs. Miming was not really active to get the
students attention and she did not really take care of her students. At the same time
I think that it was quite hard to get the students attention because in the class there
were not only clever students. Classroom is also complex with the students that
come from different character, different background, different idea, and so on. It is
really hard to get all of them pay attention of what we did as a teacher. There I
learned that as a teacher we should be creative, innovative, and active in terms to
get the students attention of our explanation.

Then, the students were not actively participate in the class. Only the majority
who always replying to what the teacher said. But, it is limited as when the teacher
asked the students. If the teacher did not asked the students, I think the class would
be completely quite. I wondering why the students were have no curious about
English at all. There was no one student who asked to Mrs. Mimin about the
materials that they do not understand or even asked about anything else. Is that
because of they had understand about the material or they did not understand at all
about the material so that they do not know what to ask. I guess it was because they
had no attention of studying English.

Furthermore, Mrs. Miming just stood in front of the classand just interacted
with the students who were in the front line. As a result, many studnts who were
inthe back line looked not intersted to the material and disengaged to the lesson.
They were noisy and kidding to each others. The teacher should give attention to
the whole students evenly by asking not only the front line students but also the
back line students or the teacher could go round all the lines in the classes. Mrs.
Miming looked no effort to admonish the disruptive or lazy students. She just give
warning like Ayo yang belakang, coba diperhatikan... She did not do an action to
warn the students. She actually could give them a sanction treatment to prevent for
them to be noisy or disruptive again. Mrs. Miming should could put character
building in her lesson which students could respect their teacher.

However Mrs. Miming have tried to make the students participate in the
learning process. I have learned from my educational psychology book that getting
children involved and interacting with them is a great way to stimulate their brains
and get them to learn more. Mrs. Miming did it when she asked their students
randomly to introduced themselves as she had practiced. It also helped her to get a
little attention from the students by making them involved in the lesson. Im sure
that by having the students practice the material helped them could more
understand. Practicing making better. Furthermore the purposed of studying second
language is to communicate it.

As a students of my course, I believe that students should have more

opportunities of talk in class, because, according theories, students do not only input
(teachers explanations), but they need output moments, that allow them to put in
practice what they already know. These moments are important because, depending
on the task, students can improve their speaking ability and increase their
confidence to introduce themselves and get acquinted to others using English. The
only moment of output I could slightly perceive was the moment of exercises, in
which students should come forward in front of the class to practice introducing
themselves. This kind of output serves only to drill the students to introduce
themselves, but not always these drillings are meaningful.

I could perceive that most of the time the class was teacher-centered and
students cold or would just answer some of the teachers questions. Most of the
time, the environment of the class was divided into two sections. One sections is
the teacher who was explaining the materials to the students who were paying
attention to the teacher, while the other section is the students who was only
lingering, making noise, kidding, and disruptive. That was not a good picture of
teaching process for me. Teacher as the one who have the responsibility to managed
the class should be more creative and active to get the class attention so that the
teacher can managed the classroom well. The students should respect the teacher
when they are explaining the materials. So, there were build a communicative
environment between the teacher and the students.

Next when there was noisy and disruptive students, the teacher should not
keep quite and let them noise. Teacher should be assertive, I think she could give
advice on and on. And when they can not be adviced I think the teacher could
scolding at them once or doing something that can show teachers assertiveness.
Based on my interview with Mrs. Mimin after we had the classroom teaching
process, Mrs. Mimin said that it was really hard to get their attention on English
because of some reasons, such as: 1) The students think that English is not important
for their daily life because they did not use English for their daily activities so that
they are not interested in studying English, 2) The students think that English is
difficult to study because of the grammar, and they have to remembering new
English vocabularies if they want to be able to speak English, 3) Their educational
background; some of the students were had no English subjects in their elementary
schools while some of them got, so that the students who did not understand about
English was less confident than they are who had English subject on their
elementary school. Furthermore, there was a student that ever went to America with
her parents. I think it could indirectly decreased the other stuents confidence in
English class.

Because of that reasons I think Mrs. Miming should be more creative,

innovative, and active in her teaching process. I saw when Mrs. Nining played the
video, the students were immediately get themselves ready to pay attention for the
video, but once when they realize that the video was bored, they lost their attention
again. Here, the teacher should try to make the class more fun. Maybe Mrs. Mimin
could try to having games to attract their attention, and make all of the parts of the
class could involved in the learning process. I think as the teacher, Mrs. Mimin
should know about their class characterized so that she can put the right theory or
method in teaching her students English as the second language.

Next, as Mrs. Mimin had known the background of their students in studying
English, she should be more active to motivate their students in studying English.
Since English is a second language in Indonesia, the teacher should not made the
class bored and too serious. The teacher should make a fun learning and
environmemt so that the student feel easy and free in studying english as a second
language. And then the student would think that english is easy to studied. After
that, little by little the teacher could put character building in their teaching process.
The teacher could make a clearance implementation of English in their daily life
especially in this globalization era. Furthermore, in this digital era, english was used
in every aspect of life such as, computer program are totally using English, phone
applications, game, and social media are now mostly using English. If they can not
speak English so they may be left behind the future.

I highlighted the situation when Mrs. Miming asked one student to turn on
the LCD that that student had to ascend a table and a chair and climbed it to turn on
the LCD because of there is no remote control. She has been teaching there for 15
years, I think that she should have known the condition of the class. If there is no
remote control Mrs. Miming can asked for a help to a janitor to turn it on before the
class, so that it not cost the time for studying. Or if it is no possible to use LCD,
Mrs. Miming can find other alternative method in teaching.

Last but not least, the students were did not asked by Mrs. Miming to write
the materials for today. Based of what I have observed, the students were not really
pay attention to the materials. I think, if the students were not asked to write the
materials today they will forget todays materials easily. I dont know whether Mrs.
Miming forgot about that or may be because of another reasons. And at the end of
the class, Mrs. Mimin only greeting good bye to the students without asking to the
students whether they have any questions or not and whether they had understand
todays materials or not, or may be there were any questions about anything. I think
if the class were quiet, the teacher should actively asked to the students; try to make
the students active in the learning process and make the students open about what
they are thinking about so that they can express their ideas.
CONCLUSION

In conclusion Im really glad that I did this observation. Though it was not a
good teaching processes, but from that I can know what lack during the teaching
processes and what I have to do when I bacome a teacher soon. It helped me learn
a lot and understand more the implemetation of Theories and Principlesn TESOL
that I have learned in the class.

I got to see different ways to get the students involved in the class during
lessons, and how to teach short lessons so that the students do not become bored. I
become realize that teaching is not an easy thing, more than that it is a complex
activity that involving many things. Once we couldnt understand the meaning of
teaching it turns we to become a failed teacher. Becoming a teacher is not only be
able to delivering materials but teacher hold the future of the students.
