We take you back way back, to where it all started Have you ever
wondered why agriculture seems to be such a big part of pulling?
We explain why
These events became the formalized sport ofhorse pulling, which is still carried
out today with specially breddraft horsesbred to have high strength for pulling
heavy loads. Today, fixed weights on sleds are dragged for a set distance and
additional weight is added in successive rounds. While it is said that the
termhorsepoweris derived from this event, the concept was developed earlier,
in experiments and measurements performed byJames WattandMason
Worrell.
1929
Motorized vehicles were put to use in the first events atVaughansville,
Missouri, andBowling Green, Ohio, the latter being where the current national
championships are held. Although the sport was recognized then, it did not
really become popular until the '50s and '60s. It was also realized, at that time,
there were no uniform set of rules. The rules varied fromstateto state, countyto
county, and competitors never knew what standards to follow. This made the
sport difficult for new entrants.
1969
Representatives from eight states congregated to create a uniform book of rules
to give the sport the much needed structure, and created theNational Tractor
Pullers Association(NTPA). The NTPA's early years were events that used
standard farm vehicles, with the motto

1976
The growing popularity of the sport caused the creation of a newfour-wheel
drive truckdivisionwhich started Truck Pulling as we know it and captured
a large fan base.
Early 1980s
The four wheel drive trucks and modified tractor divisions continued to thrill
crowds by adding more engines, and soon the tractors lost their tractor
appearance and turned into high 'spec'dragsters.
Alcohol methane engines with up to eight cylinders are permitted, but diesel
engines are not. Any wheelbase is permitted.
1988
The limit was reached in 1988 when a tractor with seven engines was built.

With the advancements we make everyday, everything just keeps getting bigger or smaller
what ever it takes to make it better.
We owe everything we have today to the innovators and brave forefathers of our past. Stop
and take a minute to realize that in 1974. 1974 they were strapping jet engines onto
tractors to out pull their neighbors. That amount of
I suspect it is the fact that there are too many distractions today , when I was a kid it meant
the world to me to get John Swineharts signature on the bill of my John Deere hat when I
snuck back in the pits of the Perry County Fair in Ohio. I didnt have a cell phone yet
somehow I survived.
When I was 15 I pulled my first truck, Its an experience that you have to live through to fully
understand. There is a connection that is made between man and machine that is simply
unexplainable.
