ACCOUNTING OF WHAT IN MY OPINION AND ACCORDING TO EXTENSIVE
RESEARCH AND INFORMAL INTERVIEWS AND ACCOUNTS HAS HAPPENED IN
THE TRINITY COLLEGE JOHNNY ERIC WILLIAMS MATTER.

1.
FORWARD

In preparing this investigative report, I would like to note for the record my motivation is borne out of my
deep love for Trinity College and concern over the direction the school has taken.

My years at Trinity involved a broad cross section of activities ranging from student government, the
school newspaper and contributions to local civic action(ConnPirg) as well as local and national political
campaigns.

A student action cause of particular note and relevance to The Johnny Eric Williams case occurred 37
years ago. At that time the proposed phase out of the psychological counseling center by The Trinity
College Administration spurred a broad coalition of students into a series of demonstrations, protests and
lengthy discussions with the faculty, parents and administration. After a 9 month period during which a
number of students died from suicide in addition to a prominent Trinity College family member, the school
finally changed course and made the right decision to keep the counseling center in tact and in so doing
help potentially prevent more problems during a tenuous cycle in that era.

This report, like the counseling effort, is written with no ill will or animosity towards anyone. To the
contrary, this movement like 37 years ago is a matching bookend dedicated to helping Trinity "save itself
from itself".

This report is based on my impressions of events and my personal opinion of a public event and the
controversy swirling around the public comments made by Professor Williams.

The report contained herein is for the betterment of Trinity College moving forward.

THE CONTROVERSY

How did this whole matter take shape? Was this an isolated incident of a few posts or was there a history
of behavior and statements which precipitated and led up to this mal conduct?

Let's take a look at what's happened so far as the timeline of this crisis has unfolded...

1. June 14th, 2017 - A gunman opens fire on defenseless members of congress on a ball field in
Alexandria, Va;

2. June 16th, 2017 - A person named "Son of Baldwin" issues grotesque hate and advocacy of violence
commentary in a Facebook post;

3. June 18th, 2017 - Trinity Professor Johnny Eric Williams CLEARLY links himself to Son of Baldwin by
re posting the advocacy of violence hashtag #LetThemFuckingDie and issues his own hate filled
commentary on Facebook. It is VERY important to note that while Trinity and Williams have tried to
rationalize and claim that his comments were misinterpreted, NO ADDITIONAL COMMENTARY clarifying
the posts was issued at the time of the initial posting of the hashtag and Williams's new commentary.
Therefore any attempts to re brand or redefine what he said have ABSOLUTELY NO MERIT;

4. June 21st, 2017 - Trinity president Joanne Berger-Sweeney issues the first of four letters to the Trinity
community admitting that the use of hashtag "connected directly with and to the inflammatory conclusion
of that article". Berger-Sweeney also admitted that use of the hashtag was "reprehensible", "showing poor
judgement" and "goes against our fundamental values as an institution".

President Berger-Sweeney then issues an immediate attempt to justify, rationalize and obfuscate

the earlier evaluation by stating that Trinity wants to "build a diverse community, welcome all viewpoints
and uphold the belief in academic freedom".

Sweeney continues saying she "supports the constitutional right to free speech" but we should take care
with words and the "context in which we use them".

Sweeney begins her dovetail to turn the tables on the opposition by circling the wagons for Williams
claiming that this whole incident and its outgrowth "has caused distress on our campus and beyond".
Sweeney states that the threats to professor Williams and to our campus community "are an
unacceptable response".

Sweeney concludes by claiming that "I denounce hate speech in all its forms and I will explore all options
to resolve this matter.";

5. June 26th, 2017 - President Berger-Sweeney's second letter informs the Trinity community that
professor Williams has been placed on leave immediately. Cover for Williams's posts is now installed
under the umbrella of "academic freedom".

6. June 30th, 2017 - A VISIT TO TRINITY COLLEGE BEGINS AN INVESTIGATION REVEALING THAT
TRINITY IS COVERING FOR WILLIAMS FEARING A POSSIBLE POTENTIAL MULTI MILLION
DOLLAR WRONGFUL TERMINATION LAWSUIT IF WILLIAMS IS FIRED. (This comes from a very
knowledgeable source in the Trinity community.);

7. July 14th, 2017 - The third letter by President Berger-Sweeney again invokes the need for "academic
freedom". This reoccurring theme of freedom of inquiry and freedom of expression becomes the mainstay
of the college's defense of Williams. Berger-Sweeney reports that the dean of faculty and vice president
for academic affairs Tim Cresswell's review is now complete;

This was the genesis of the incident and report:

On June 14th, 2017, a gunman in Alexandria VA opened fire on defenseless members of

Congress and their staff doing nothing more than playing baseball wounding some and critically
injuring Representative Steve Scalise. Statements initially made on Facebook by an anonymous
"Son of Baldwin" were then taken, reposted and further gleefully editorialized by
Professor Williams. The comments are as follows:

Son of Baldwin original Facebook post:

If you see [white people] drowning. If you see them in a burning building. If they are
bleeding out in an emergency room. If the ground is crumbling beneath them. If they are in a
park and they turn their weapons on each other: do nothing, a June 16 article by Son of
Baldwin says. Let. Them. F-ing. Die. And smile a bit when you do.
Ultimately, the 32 page report reveals and concludes that:

A. Cresswell cites the words and actions under review:

On June 18, 2017 at 9:27pm in a post on his personal (not Trinity) Facebook page1
Professor Williams wrote:
It is past time for the racially oppressed to do what people who believe themselves to
be white will not do, put end [sic] to the vectors of their destructive mythology of
whiteness and their white supremacy system.
#LetThemFuckingDie

On June 18, 2017 at 9:36pm in a second Facebook post Professor Williams wrote:
Im fed the fuck up with self identified whites daily violence directed at immigrants,
Muslim and sexual [sic] and racially oppressed people. The time is now to confront
these inhuman assholes and end this now.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
B. Cresswell cites the Trinity College Faculty Manual, employees rights and the employee handbook and
concludes that Williams is not guilty of any violations.

C. Cresswell's report then forms the ultimate spin, verbal massage and damage control conclusion:

" Williams was endeavoring to state the truth as he sees it, exercising the academic freedom
Trinity policy provides. .
Trinity College policy in the Employee Handbook on Rights and Responsibilities asks all
employees to promote the safety of the community and to not harm the colleges reputation.
While the events following Professor Williams posts may have affected the reputation of the
College and brought safety and security into question, those results were more attributable to
extreme reactions to his posts than to the actual statements in the posts themselves, which
were not directed to specific individuals or at Trinity and did not advocate racial violence.

Professor Williams did not violate the Trinity College policy in the Employee Handbook
on Discrimination and Harassment. His statements did not advocate racial violence or
discrimination against white people generally, but rather focused on people the
Professor identified as having committed daily violence directed at immigrants,
Muslim and sexual and racially oppressed people. Furthermore, the Employee
Handbook makes it clear that principles of academic freedom must be taken into
account in evaluating whether faculty speech constitutes a violation of other College
policies, especially speech on matters of public concern or speech within a faculty
members academic discipline. To do otherwise would undermine academic freedom
and create a chilling effect on appropriately free scholarship and teaching.

It is my view that there are no grounds to institute disciplinary action against Professor
Williams. It is certainly the case, however, that these events necessitate a wider conversation
about academic freedom and the role of professional restraint and judgment in an era of
social media and political fracturing.

Our mission statement declares that Trinity College is where the liberal arts meet the real
world.40 This point of juncture is not always comfortable for either the College community or
the wider population. Yet by adhering faithfully to its policies, the College can best protect its
core values and long-term vitality. ";

8. July 14th, 2017 -The board of trustees affirms that Cresswell's conclusions that professor Williams's
actions and words were protected by "Academic Freedom". The board finds that Williams did not violate
Trinity College's policies.

The board chair issues her statement that supports the findings. The board chairman Cornelia Parsons
Thornburgh (Trinity class of 1980) cites "respect for the principles of 'academic freedom' and free speech
which are...critical to an institution of learning. Thornburgh concludes that "The strength of Trinity College
is evidenced in the passion and depth of feeling we all have for this great institution". Thornburgh's letter
supports and reaffirms the findings of the 32 page report by Dean Cresswell thereby giving Williams a
complete pass on his posts and actions;

9. Cresswell consults with external legal and policy experts. Williams is put on PAID LEAVE
throughout the fall semester and will be continuing his "scholarship on race , racism, and academic
freedom". Williams has received threats so we want to allow him leave to come back in January 2018.

Note: This cooling off period will allow the school administration and board time to manage, massage and
have sensitivity forums to affect crisis control and condition the student body to adhere to their narrative;

10. Continuing the July 14th, 2017 letter, president Berger-Sweeney now enters the realm of
reinterpretation of thought speech and action. Berger-Sweeney states that "#LetThemFuckingDie" "was
interpreted by some" to be let people die but that according to Williams "was not his intent".

Berger-Sweeney continues saying that "the hashtag offends me personally and contradicts our
fundamental institutional values. It runs counter to our efforts to bridge divides and to promote
understanding".

CLEARLY PRESIDENT BERGER-SWEENEY KNOWS WHAT WILLIAMS HAS DONE IS TERRIBLY

WRONG AND RUNS COUNTER TO EVERYTHING THAT TRINITY STANDS FOR YET SHE DESIRES
TO FIND A WAY TO MAKE THIS ALL GO AWAY AND COVER UP THE MALCONDUCT.

What Williams said claims Berger-Sweeney "was fueled by misleading and incorrect
reports about what was actually said".
NOW BERGER-SWEENEY SETS THE STAGE TO DRAW ANOTHER PARTY AS
VILLAIN AND WILLIAMS AS VICTIM;

11. Continuing the July 14th, 2017 letter, Berger-Sweeney now claims that because of
Campus Reform's reporting on this matter, it is their fault that Williams has been
harassed. Campus Reform (found at CampusReform.org) is the villain and they are "a
threat to freedom of expression and robust debate which will discover truth and
knowledge". "Campus Reform is an attacker against free speech at numerous colleges
and universities". "We must be able to speak openly without fear of intimidation or
violence".

THUS, ACCORDING TO TRINITY COLLEGE, IT IS CAMPUS REFORM THAT IS TO

BLAME FOR ALL OF THIS CONTROVERSY AND NOT WILLIAMS.

We are to use this incident to enter into a discussion of the destructive forces of racism
and hate concludes Berger-Sweeney.

THEREFORE HATE SPEECH AND VIOLENT HASHTAGS ARE NOT THE PROBLEM
BUT IT IS THOSE WHO POINT IT OUT AND CAUSE MISINTERPRETATION THAT
ARE TO BLAME;

12. July 31st, 2017 - President Berger-Sweeney issues the fourth letter on the
Williams matter. Sweeney-Berger now goes on offense maintaining that this was an
attack on his free speech. Campus Reform and "outside forces" are to blame. We have
"moved on". As proof that this is no longer a real concern to the college administration
and board, Berger-Sweeney cites mitigating statistics that demonstrate that from her
perspective this matter did not really hurt or affect the college enrollment or annual
giving campaigns.

A. Berger-Sweeney states that the 16 students that withdrew were not

significant because that "is our summer melt".

B. Berger-Sweeney states that "we only lost $200,000 but our 28.6 million was a 26%
increase over the previous year.

While there was some cost to "manage the crisis"("additional security on campus for a few weeks"), "this
incident will not divide us".

Berger-Sweeney has a campaign for community since the 2014 workshop "Meaningful Discourse Across
Difficult Boundaries".We will have discussions of race and racism, academic freedom and freedom of
speech".

Berger-Sweeney continues imploring the community "we need your help. Share your thoughts on our
online form".

Berger-Sweeney thanks members "who were on the front lines of managing the events of The Campus
Reform Incident" (NOTE THAT THIS IS NO LONGER THE JOHNNY ERIC WILLIAMS INCIDENT!)
CONCLUSIONS

A. FROM THE TRINITY COLLEGE ADMINISTRATION'S PERSPECTIVE WILLIAMS IS THE VICTIM.

CAMPUS REFORM IS THE VILLAIN AND ACADEMIC FREEDOM HAS BEEN ATTACKED AND SO
HAS FREEDOM OF SPEECH. WHAT A FARCE!

B. TRINITY COLLEGE IS A PRIVATE COLLEGE. SO, DISMISSING AN EMPLOYEE FOR CONDONING

CALLS FOR VIOLENCE (#LETTHEMFUCKINGDIE) IS NOT REALLY A "FREE SPEECH" ISSUE. IT'S A
MATTER OF COMMON SENSE AND VALUES THAT A PRIVATE INSTITUTION CAN MAKE
A JUDGMENT ON WHEN STANDARDS ARE VIOLATED. WILLIAMS COULD/SHOULD/CAN BE FIRED.
TRINITY HAS THAT RIGHT AND CAN MAKE THE DECISION TO TERMINATE WILLIAMS'S
CONTRACT;

13. August 13th, 2017 - The third and UNPUBLICIZED Johnny Eric Williams Facebook
Post - WILLIAMS DOUBLES DOWN!

"There were many people at my college and around the nation who claimed that my use of
#LetThemFuckingDie was uncouth, uncivil and incited violence yet they say nothing about nazi white
supremacists use of actual violence in #Charlottesville. I'm done with white supremacists and their
enablers telling us, the racially oppressed, how we should address their incessant racist actions and
beliefs. Being "civil" guarantees our death". Johnny Eric Williams

CLEARLY WILLIAMS SHOWS ABSOLUTELY NO REMORSE FOR HIS PREVIOUS POSTS AND
DOUBLES DOWN ON HIS POSITIONS EVER EMBOLDENED BY AN ADMINISTRATION THAT HE
KNOWS IS IN HIS CORNER;

14. September 5th, 2017 - Williams, who is supposedly on leave , is allowed and probably encouraged
to speak at a lecture in McCook Auditorium. The topic? "Academic Freedom and Intellectual Life".

ALTHOUGH NOT HEAVILY ATTENDED OR PUBLICIZED , THIS EVENT SERVED ONCE AGAIN AS
AN OPPORTUNITY FOR TRINITY TO TRY TO MANAGE AND NUANCE THIS SITUATION. CLEARLY
THIS WAS A HIGHLY IRREGULAR ACTION THAT HAD EARLIER PUT WILLIAMS ON LEAVE UNTIL
JANUARY. BY ALLOWING WILLIAMS TO SPEAK THE SCHOOL CLEARLY DILUTED THEIR LEAVE
ACTION. THE EVENT WAS SPONSORED BY THE TRINITY ADVOCACY CHAPTER OF THE
AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS (AAUP);

15. September 5th, 2017 - President Joanne Berger-Sweeney released her fifth and final letter on the
Williams matter. Berger-Sweeney addresses the Campus Reform and Williams incident saying, "We will
have small group discussions, storytelling sessions, performing and visual arts and other endeavors
dedicated to addressing these issues".

FORUMS, GROUP ACTIVITIES, AND DISTRACTION EVENTS ARE ALL PART OF A CAREFULLY
CRAFTED PLAN TO SMOTHER THE TRINITY COMMUNITY WITH SECULAR SENSITIVITY
CONDITIONING;

16. September 30th, 2017 - A letter about this entire matter was written to the president and board.
There was NO RESPONSE FROM ANYONE.
17. October 3rd, 2017 - President Berger-Sweeney hosted a heavily managed and carefully
orchestrated "conversation" between Frederick M. Lawrence (Lecturer at The Georgetown Law
Center) and William K. Marimow (vice president and editor-at-large of Philadelphia Media Network)
entitled " The Contours of Free Expression on Campus". It is subtitled, "Higher Education's Role in
Advancing Understanding and Promoting A Just Society".

THE ENTIRE 90 MINUTES WAS AN EXERCISE IN PLACATING RADICAL SPEECH, PRAISING AND
QUOTING LIBERAL MEDIA OUTLETS AND MITIGATING ANY OPPOSING IDEAS AS "FAKE NEWS"
DISTORTION PROMOTED BY THE IDEAS OF THE FEW (THOSE IN THE MINORITY). THE TERM
"TROLL" WAS USED BY FREDERICK LAWRENCE WITH REFERENCE TO A PERSON GOING AFTER
A COLLEGE ADMINISTRATION AND THEN GETTING THE MESSAGE TO GO VIRAL. PUT SIMPLY,
WHAT WAS PRESENTED FOR 87 MINUTES WAS THE PURIST FORM OF STAGE CRAFTED
PROPAGANDA.

BIAS ALERT! AN IMPORTANT NOTE: DURING THE INTRODUCTIONS, IT WAS DISCLOSED THAT
MR. MARIMOW SERVED AS A MEMBER OF THE TRINITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES FROM 2008 TO
2015 AND WAS PART OF THE SELECTION COMMITTEE WHICH HIRED BERGER-SWEENEY.

OVERALL CONCLUSIONS
------------------------------------

The college is in deep damage control and denial about what has
happened (in some ways analogous to the NFL). Fearing short term
litigation and personal angst , the college is hoping that the long term
PR debacle and loss of annual giving will be manageable.

The college faculty, administration and board have circled the wagons

here and are coddling a radical out of fear of repercussions both inside
and outside of the college.

The college is clearly condoning Williams's behavior by masking it as

"Academic Freedom" even though there is NOTHING ACADEMIC ABOUT
MR. WILLIAM'S POSTS.

Trinity has had a social media policy in place since at least 2012. The
policy explicitly includes faculty as well as students and thus Williams
was governed by it and obligated as an employee to abide by it. Here is
the link:

http://www.trincoll.edu/AboutTrinity/offices/communications/Documents
/Trinity%20College%20Social%20Media%20Policy%20July%202012.pdf
If Williams was governed by and violated this policy (as clearly was the
case), Dean Cresswell had an obligation to include the violation in his
report to the president and recommend an appropriate
punishment. The faculty members were not consulted by
Dean Cresswell during his preparation of the "faculty
report" and his conclusions and recommendations do
not represent the view of the majority of the faculty.
Williams is quite simply a continuous vessel of divisive negative energy
who is dragging the college further down a path towards progressive
mediocrity. Testament to this are a number of interviews that were
conducted with students, prominent members of the Trinity community
and individuals living in the community outside of the campus.
Examples of his comments to students are found in the petition to the
school below. The students remained anonymous out of fear of
reprisals.

Williams's August 13th extra post shows absolutely no contrition for his
earlier posts.

Williams's September 5th lecture

demonstrated his complete lack of remorse or
contrition for his previous Facebook posts. The tone
and language used in the lecture served as a reminder
that Williams has no intention of changing but is
instead emboldened by the attention he was given as
a speaker who was invited back while on paid
suspension.

Williams's September 5th appearance and lecture

demonstrates that the college is not serious about
disciplining and attempting to change William's
behavior.
1.

William's paid leave once again demonstrates that the

college is not serious about penalizing William's for
his
actions.

Trinity College's official reaction, in our view, to these horrific remarks has
been almost as shocking as the comments themselves. Initially, many of us
kept asking ourselves over and over: "Are we really at a place and time in
America where we can openly and enthusiastically advocate the potential
assassination of elected officials?" How could the leadership of Trinity College
still reserve judgment and hold the incident "under review"? A line appears to
have been crossed from free speech to active advocacy of mass violence.
Trinity's response has been completely unacceptable. Instead of immediately
terminating this professor after this outrageous endorsement of what we see
as egregious behavior, the college has sought the refuge of legal counsel,
hidden behind academic conduct and regulatory review, and finally has
determined to keep this professor employed. Advocacy of violence and hate
should never be allowed to masquerade as academic freedom.

The school's motto Pro Ecclesia Et Patria (For the church and country)
reflects a deep reverence to the sacrifices made by many to both institutions
and a reminder of the high ideals of the original founders of the school. How is
this standard and ideal being upheld by supporting the advocacy of violence
against our elected leaders ?

This should be a call to action for all Trinity alumni and current students.
Given these clear facts and circumstances, many of us call for this professor's
immediate termination. Being an intellectual advocate of politically motivated
violence cannot be tolerated nor condoned. We urge the president and the
Board of Trustees to reconsider their decision to look the other way, uphold
the integrity of the college and ask Professor Williams to clear out his desk
and take his hate somewhere else.
