The city of Berlin has instituted a number of measures to encourage active commuting among its citizenry, such as walking, cycling
or public transit. This exhibition features a dozen Berlin neighbourhoods, with photos and texts illustrating the initiatives taken to
make city living more pleasant and to foster cyclist- and pedestrian-friendly urban development.

From September 20 to 26, the Centre d'écologie urbaine de Montréal (Montreal urban ecology centre) and the Goethe-Institut will
present the first edition of the Semaine Quartiers sans voitures (car-free neighbourhoods week) that will feature activities explaining
how some European cities developed car-free -or few traffic- neighbourhoods. European examples are a source of inspiration to
transform actual neighbourhoods or develop new ones into cyclist-and pedestrian-friendly urban developments.

Play Une planète pour P-O (a planet for P-O) by Théâtre Parminou
Activity organized in collaboration with the Fondation québécoise en environnement (Quebec environment foundation) and
presented by Proxim.
This show deals with the issue of air quality and targets audiences from elementary grades 4 to 6.
Synopsis: Ever since he was a young boy, Pierre-Olivier lived as a recluse in his bedroom. Because his health was poor, he could
never adapt to the toxicity of his village, where townspeople long ago opted for economic development and runaway consumerism,
much to the detriment of the town's air quality. Although suffering from asthma, the young boy dreams of walking out of doors and
hiking over to the other side of the mountain, where stars can still be seen shining in the night sky. In the course of his search for
meaning, it dawns on him that a boy cannot save himself without also saving everyone else, and certainly not without a struggle to
save the environment.
Written as an adventure story, Une planète pour P-O is designed to foster actions already in progress and once again confirm that
the least little gesture counts for something and can make the difference.

Conference - Un climat de changement : des solutions à la crise environnementale (a climate of change: solutions to the
environmental crisis)

The Copenhagen conference on climate change was deemed a failure. Yet, these major changes are happening throughout the
world, and we are increasingly transitioning to a world less dependent on carbon. Karel Mayrand will discuss the science of climate
change, the transformations necessary to solve the climate crisis, and the changes already instituted around the world.

Conference - L'apaisement de la circulation (putting the brakes on traffic)
By Daniel Bouchard, Conseil régional de l’environnement de Montréal (CRE MTL - Montreal regional environmental council).
There are more and more automobile drivers in greater Montreal, and the road and highway network is getting overloaded. A study
by the Ministère des Transports du Québec has shown that the socio-economic costs of traffic congestion have increased sharply,
from $779 million in 2004 to $1.423 billion in 2008. The result is that, in order to avoid traffic jams, car drivers tend to veer off the
main arteries and use secondary roads and local grids. Overusing local streets deteriorates the quality of life, increases noise levels,
takes away from the feeling of security and increases public exposure to certain contaminants. This conference will focus on ways to
redesign streets to include abatement measures to reduce through traffic and prompt drivers to adopt appropriate behaviour in
residential neighbourhoods.

Round table - L’impact des transports sur l’environnement (the impact of transportation on the environment)
The Fondation québécoise en environnement will invite two generations to take part in a most original debate on transportation and
its effect on the environment.
Everywhere on the planet, we are using natural resources with no regard to their sustainability. Current economic models show little
concern for reconciling the needs of societies and ecosystems. The same is generally true for individual behaviour in terms of the
modes of transport we use and our environmental awareness as to the transportation of the products we consume.
These are some of the issues to be debated and about which participants will be urged to voice their opinions. The conference will
reveal the thoughts expressed by the two opposing age groups as they experience a range of environmental issues from a different
standpoint and at a different stage of their lives: When should you act and how should you go about it? What methods can we use to
change our habits and step up our fight against climate change? Do you feel that environmental values are at the heart of your
generation’s concerns?

Conference – Le développement durable (sustainable development)

This conference will be an opportunity for AMT to review its achievements in terms of sustainable development, and to outline the
projects it has instituted since 2008. That was in fact the year in which the organization decided to define a comprehensive
sustainable development policy that considers environmental, social and economic dimensions alike.

Pollution atmosphérique : Bilan et perspectives (air pollution: status and outlook)
By André Bélisle, president and founder of the AQLPA.
The facts and figures are undeniable: transportation accounts for 47% of greenhouse gas emissions and at least 10% of respiratory
diseases in the greater Montreal area. But what about air-quality and atmospheric-pollution issues in Quebec overall? Where do we
stand and where are we headed? André Bélisle paints a province-wide portrait of air pollution, identifies the associated issues, and
proposes inspired courses of action for a healthy, actively mobile future!

This conference will be a forum for Montrealers to discuss their quality of life and seek answers to queries still outstanding on the
subject. At which scale do people experience green neighbourhoods? Does the design of green neighbourhoods go beyond the
mere notion of transport? What priorities need to be considered when creating green neighbourhoods? What role does the public
play in creating such neighbourhoods? What are the usual impacts? Finally, what tools does the city provide the boroughs with to
enable them to set up their own green neighbourhoods?

their vehicles, with ecological transit solutions. At this press briefing, the ALQPA and its partners will present the program report as
well as the impacts of the program on air quality.

Conference – Avenues possibles pour vivre sans voiture toute l’année (possibles alternatives to live without a car all year long)

Car-free zones are becoming increasingly popular in Germany. They are often innovative projects that aim to transform old industrial
sectors into residential neighbourhoods oriented on an unconventional use of public spaces. Moreover, car-free neighbourhoods
incorporated simple but efficient incentives measures: up to 80% of the residents of some zones do not own a car. Urban mobility
and lifestyle are clearly reconceived Another lifestyle and another way to conceive urban mobility are clearly emerging. But how
these measures promoting active transport can be implemented in a winter city such as Montréal? Several inspiring ideas from Olso
allow us to analyze the context of cities located between the 45th parallel and the polar circle and the development challenges they
represent.

The launch of the province-wide “transportation cocktail” campaign and its accompanying website promoting commendable
commuting practices. Visitors will be invited to share commuting tips and time-saving ideas for their particular city or region, and
alternative solutions will be presented to promote the use and implementation of the transportation cocktail concept.

Conference - En temps réel avec STL Synchro (in real time with STL synchro)

This conference will focus on the various benefits associated with the new “smart” transport systems. The information commuters
get today comes from many platforms: display panels at the busier stations and in buses, websites, texting and the Chronobus. The
conference will explain the why and how of operation assistance systems and commuter information technology aimed at preventing
lost time and relieving the stress associated with using public transit. After a brief description of the SAEIV (automated train-
localization and traveller advisory system) implemented at the STL, conference moderators will highlight its benefits for Laval public
transit.

This cocktail hour is the perfect occasion for the event partners, stakeholders in environment and downtown workers to discuss and

Mr. Eide will present the range of courses on cycling offered during the CAN-BIKE program, developed by the Canadian Cycling
Association. The CANBIKE program is based on a series of standardized and nationwide courses offered by numerous
organizations that have at heart the education, safety and health of the population. The program consists of a variety of courses for
all cyclists, children and adults, beginners and experimented. The courses focus on different aspects of road cycling, for a safe and

In this conference, Daniel Breton will paint a comprehensive portrait of our use of fuel and the current transport situation in Quebec
and Canada. New avenues for petroleum alternatives to be explored will also be discussed, as well as ways to change auto-driver
behaviours and push them towards greener modes of individual transport and public transit.

At the dawn of the 21st century, urban mobility is at the dawn of a revolution. A new generation of electrically powered vehicles, both
personal and collective, offers a viable alternative to fossil fuels. This rebirth of electric cars is an offshoot of the increasingly popular
notion that society is coming to the end of the petroleum era and that human activities have to “decarbonize” to face the challenge of
climate change. The conference will touch on electric vehicles from the early days and discuss coming trends in terms of electrical
mobility in urban settings.

Conference – Réinventer Montréal : le tramway moderne (reinventing Montréal: modern tramways)
By Emmanuel Felipe, project manager of the Montreal tramway and Érik Provost, design consultant (City of Montréal).
In the coming years, the City of Montreal wants to become the first city in North America in terms of public transit. This ambition
meets Montreal’s desire to establish its tramway system by 2017.
With an estimate of nearly 70 000 passengers daily for its first line, the tramway of Montréal will be one of the most performing in
North America. Convenient, attractive and eco-friendly, the tramway will encourage Montrealers to adopt new travelling habits. This
conference will demystify the modern tramways and, above all, will present the benefits in terms of sustainable and economic
development, public transit and neighbourhoods developments.

1:30 to 2:15 p.m.

A symbolic gesture to close the week
A class of grade-4 or -5 Montreal schoolchildren will display compositions, drawings or collages expressing their vision of what
public transit will look like in 2040. They will then seal their artwork into a time capsule to be buried on their school’s grounds… not
to be opened before 2040! This activity will mark the official end of this exciting and educational week. Several dignitaries as well as
the spokesperson will be on hand to share their thoughts on active transport and public transit, and on the future of urban mobility in
the metropolitan area.

2:30 to 3:15 p.m.

Conference - L'électrification du réseau de trains de banlieue (the electrification of the commuter rail network)

In the last few years, the Agence métropolitaine de transport (AMT) has defined a sustainable development policy in which the
electrification of the rail network figures prominently. The prime motivation is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions produced by
public transit systems. In 2009, true to this resolution, the AMT initiated a feasibility study on electrifying its own network the findings
of which are expected for late 2010. Patrick Charpentier’s presentation will touch on the technical considerations of converting active
track to electricity and accommodating both passenger and freight transport.
