The Idea of dissecting the French Revolution and The Reign of Terror came from an

interest of French history and how Robespierre began his movement. The interest rose from the
argument of whether or not The Reign of Terror was justified. With little research done about the
basics of The Reign of Terror, both of us decided to look much further into this historical event.
To our luck, National History Day was coming up and we decided to use our idea of The Reign
of Terror which took part in the French Revolution. The Reign of Terror - being a very important
aspect to the French Revolution - included the executions of 16,594 people.
We decided to begin our research with few simple internet searches including key
questions such as; “What was The Reign of Terror?” and “Why did the French Revolution
occur?” After our primary research, we continued to take a deeper look into this topic. We began
to investigate important thoughts such as ‘Robespierre’, ‘The Committee of Public Safety’ and
‘Let them eat cake’– a quote used by Marie Antoinette during the French Revolution meant to
allow those in poverty who lost their bread to eat cake instead. Detailed searches such as those
brought us closer to finding out more about the French revolution and The Reign of Terror. We
took the types of sources we were using into a very large consideration. Whether a source was
primary or secondary and why. We examined a large variety of websites and chose those that
stuck out to us the as the most reliable. Our sources were based off encyclopedias, valid
information and historian authors.
Our display for our project will be a website. The website was chosen with careful
consideration of pros and cons and it was decided a website would be a great fit with easy
navigation and easier forms of citing our sources. Our goal with the website is to create a
simplistic navigation with important information and hyperlinks to sources. We enjoy the idea of
timelines and menu bars to make the website an educational and enjoyable experience.
Our topic chosen of the French Revolutions Reign of Terror corresponds with the theme
of conflict and compromise because of the chain reaction of issues and attempted solutions. One
issue for government was disagreements on the new changes being brought to the land. Their
attempt of solving the problem was to kill off anyone who disagreed with the new alternations.
This new solution was a conflict to those who were being sentenced to the guillotine or having to
witnessed their neighbors being beheaded. Another issue was those threatened to be executed
were forced to keep their mouth shut or they would be jailed or possibly killed.
