LIGHTING

 Federal Style Lighting comes in a variety

of finishes.
 Most of the lights appear to be a lit
candle
 The light on the left is antique gold with a
carved look and the light fixture on the
right is black and has a forged look.
 Both light fixtures both formal and
informal hang from a single chain

By: Amanda Ransbarger

FABRICS

 Both of these are examples of

federal fabrics
 This luxurious 100% silk fabric is
perfect for home decor accents,
draperies, swags, pillows and duvet
covers. (left)
 From Studio E, this 108'' wide quilt
back fabric is perfect for quilt
backings, curtains, duvet covers
and more. Colors include shades
of blue. (right)

TEXTILES

 The finest antique Persian Serapis are

geometric or stylized floral in design. The
great majority of 19th century Serapi rugs
employ large-scale all-over patterns or
Medallions design with less pattern. Antique
Persian Serapis have historically been the
carpet of choice in historic American state
and Federal venues. They are also the most
popular choices for decorative traditional
antique rugs amongst the top Interior
designers. (left) 1st dibs
 The art of streaking color, a technique known
as abrash, was developed in antique Ferahan
carpets to a high degree, and is used profusely
in 19th century examples. Often in these early
antique Persian carpets, the base color will
change dramatically from one end of the field
to the other, a traditional technique that can
produce great drama and distinction. (right)

FAVORED ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS, AND
CONSTRUCTION DETAILS
Characteristics
Federal style house is a simple square or rectangular box, two or three stories high and
two rooms deep. Some homes have been made larger, modified with projecting wings,
attached dependencies or even both, and in some homes and buildings, one can find an
elaborate curved or polygonal floor plan.

The exterior decoration in Federal styles and designs is generally confined to a porch or
entry element. The columns and moldings in Federal architecture are narrow and rather
simple. It often showcases geometrical concepts. Elliptical, circular and fan-shaped
motifs formed by fluted radiating lines are common decorations found in Federal style
homes and office buildings. One of the oldest American examples of such flourishes is on
the dining-room ceiling of Mount Vernon. Executed in plaster, the Federal design
contains an ornamental rinceau border festooned by corn husks and a central rosette.
By: Christina Watkins
Materials
Not surprisingly, the building materials in Federal style architecture vary
with location. The homes of the Northeast were typically made of
clapboard, while Southern houses were often brick as are most of the
Federal style homes in the urban north, where fireproofing was much
desired.
Roof
Hip roofs capped by a balustrade and simple gable and even roofs with a
center gable crowned by a front façade pediment, are among the most
popular Federal roof styles. Dormers often pierce the roof to bring light
and space into an attic.

By: Christina Watkins

Windows
Windows are never grouped in a Federal style house, but are arranged
individually in strict horizontal and vertical symmetry. Typically, the
front windows in a federal style home are five-ranked, although there are
examples of three and seven-ranked windows. Palladian-style windows
are often used in gables as an architectural flourish. Windows are almost
invariably composed of double-hung wood sashes with the top sash held
in place by metal pins (counterbalancing weights had not been invented
yet). Thin wooden muntins divide the window into small lights (panes).
Before the Revolutionary War, the standard light was 6” x 8”, but as
glazing technologies improved, the size increased to 8” x 13”. Generally,
the windows feature six over six lights, although nine over nine and
other configurations can also be found in several federal style homes.

By: Christina Watkins

Entrance
Befitting its importance, especially when the center of a strictly
symmetrical façade, the front door of a Federal home is usually the most
decorated part of the home’s exterior. On this score, a semicircular or
elliptical fan light above the door with or without flanking sidelights is a
favorite device used in Federal architecture.
A doorway’s surround might also include ornate molding or a small entry
porch. Some Federal style designers often enhance the drama of the front
entrance with curvilinear lines, front stair rails, iron balconies and even
curved fronts. Decorative moldings, such as tooth-like dentils, are often
used to emphasize cornices in the Federal design.

BOSTON CULTURE

By: Amanda Ransbarger

BOSTON, MA 1780-1830

Boston Massachusetts was a smaller quiet community in 1780’s. By the1800’s it had become a bustling seaport and
cosmopolitan city with an increased population. The abolition of slavery in the state in 1783 gave blacks greater
physical mobility, but their social mobility was slow.” There were many different factors that changed the culture of
Boston including the New England triangular trade with the Caribbean. The sugar was manufactured into Rum,
Molasses, and many different kids of candy. Over 150 candy companies have originated from Boston.
Boston was chartered as a city in 1822. The second mayor of the city was Josiah Quincy III, “who undertook
infrastructure improvements in roads and sewers, and organized the city's dock area around the newly erected Faneuil
Hall Marketplace, popularly known as Quincy Market”. “By the mid-19th century Boston was one of the largest
manufacturing centers in the nation, noted for its garment production, leather goods, and machinery industries.
Manufacturing overtook international trade to dominate the local economy”. This bustling city drew many wealthy
people to Boston. Wealthy families were able to give their son’s a college education. Also Irish settlers were drawn to
Boston as indentured servants. After working 5-7 years they were given citizenship. The Irish and Scottish were mostly
had a catholic background but were not permitted to worship until later on. Eventually they were allowed to build a
Catholic Church in downtown Boston in 1729. After this, their was a flood of Scottish & Irish people into the Boston
area especially after the potato famine in 1845-49. To this day, there is a greater percentage of Irish people in Boston
than any other city in the United States.

Paint, wallpaper and tile
For paint, it is easily washable, with water and a cloth.
For the wallpaper
“Sometimes, dusting isn’t enough. Some wallpaper stains can’t be cleaned, unfortunately, such
as ink, but others may wash away. The easiest – and cheapest – method of cleaning wallpaper
uses a simple soft sponge, a little dishwasher soap and water.

Before you carry out the cleaning, however, it’s important to check your wallpaper can
withstand soap and water. Mix your solution and apply it to a small, hidden part of the
wallpaper (such as behind a piece of furniture). If the water is soaked up by the paper, or the
colour runs, you’re going to do more damage than good. If it’s OK, then move ahead.

Mix a small amount of dishwasher soap with warm water in a small bowl and combine. Lightly
moisten a soft sponge or cloth in the solution and dampen the paper, without scrubbing too
hard. This should then be rinsed using a fresh cloth wetted with just warm water, and then
dried with a clean towel.” (https://www.grahambrown.com/us/blog-howto-
howtocleanwallpaper.html)
Flooring
• Hardwood and Vinyl
• “Vacuum or sweep your floor regularly with a soft-bristled attachment or broom, especially in high-traffic areas. This prevents gritty dirt and particle buildup that can scratch the wood’s surface.
Don’t use vacuums with a beater bar or power rotary brush head.

• Use protective window coverings to block fade-causing UV rays and excessive heat from direct sunlight. Most wood types will gradually age when not covered, so it’s a good idea to rearrange rugs
and furniture periodically to help it age evenly.

• TIPS FOR PREVENTING DAMAGE

• Keep pets’ nails trimmed and their paws clean. Pets can track in substances that cause scratching and stains.

• Use a humidifier during heating seasons to help reduce wood shrinkage and humidity between 35% and 55%.

• Wipe up spills and spots immediately with Mohawk FloorCare Essentials Hardwood & Laminate Flooring Cleaner applied directly to a clean white cloth.

• Use ice to harden tough substances like wax or chewing gum, and then gently scrape with a plastic scraper or a credit card. Be careful not to scratch the surface and wipe the area clean with a soft,
slightly damp cloth.”

JUSTIFICATION OF THE SOLUTION

The elements and principles that were most used in the design is color and harmony. Colors are
all in the same family, a lot of light colors are presented throughout the project, and that brings
everything together. The harmony is made out of all the furniture going together. They are all the
same sort of wood, except different colors of it. The elements and principles that were sub dominant
was balance and line, because everything is balanced, and the line, most of the things chosen for this
design, all have similar lines, federal style with a modern twist lines are all throughout this design.
For example the built in has a federal style feel with the curved lines, but also is modern.
The design that was created reflects the culture and diversity of the clients because it's very
neutral, and all types of people will be living in the transitional house, so by having the design be
neutral, people of all different cultures will feel right at home. The furniture, finishes and lighting
selections meet the needs of the women and children living in the transitional housing because they
are not what you would expect at a transitional home, and they need some sort of normalcy.
The universal design application, codes ,egress requirements and environmental design
influenced the design because I wanted to follow everything and have all the people that will be
staying there be comfortable. For example, the paint is environmentally friendly because I wanted it
to be, and I had chosen something else before but it wasn't environmentally friendly, so I changed
that. I just wanted to have everyone feel as comfortable as they could when they would walk in to the
transitional house and that involved following all the universal design, codes, and requirements.
