READ THIS DOCUMENT ENTIRELY AND THOROUGHLY

Purpose:
- to demonstrate your ability to communicate orally effectively
- to demonstrate your ability to create a media text
- to demonstrate you ability and read and create connections to literature
- to demonstrate your ability to explain the codes and conventions of a media text

PSA is short for Public Service Announcement. They are commercials aimed at educating the general public about issues of
concern.

Your assignment is to create a PSA about an issue that affects students your age, or your community, or the world. You want to
take a stand on this issue, and present that stand in a way that both informs and inspires others.

You will look at examples of other PSA's, plan your PSA, sketch out your storyboard, film it, use resources to enhance it like
background music, and edit it.

You will reflect on the effectiveness of PSAs on yourself and your peers, and you will consider whether a PSA could have changed
the outcomes for Andy and his friends.

Please note that you should:

1. BE PRESENT in your PSA. A portion of your grade is oral communication which requires me to hear your voice, see your
facial expressions, etc.
2. Practice ahead of time: timing, pronunciation, expression in voice and face, memorizing or at least setting up your
“teleprompter” to make it look like you’re naturally talking to the camera.
3. Film your PSA and apply appropriate codes and conventions (think costume, music, props, background, tone of voice,
facial expressions).

You are expected to submit:

___ Your final audio/video recording
___ A written copy of the recording, including script, stage directions, and/ or storyboards (Use these to call attention
to your codes & conventions)
___ A written analysis of the codes & conventions used and why they are appropriate (chart form is acceptable)
___ A well-developed paragraph explaining if you think PSAs work, and if you think a PSA could have changed any of the
outcomes in Tears of a Tiger.

Submit ALL work at once

(For example: “ After watching my PSA, I want readers to know that life is very different in developed countries than it is in developing
countries”. Thinking through the purpose for your PSA will help you to make important decisions about the facts, images, music, etc. to
include in your final product.)
Emotion you’re trying to communicate: ___________________________________
Why does this emotion make sense for your PSA:
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________
(Every PSA is designed to persuade viewers to take action on an issue of importance. As a result, every PSA must attempt to make viewers feel
specific emotions. Thinking through how you want your viewers to feel will help you to make better choices as you develop your final
product.)
Title of your PSA: _____________________________
(Consider giving your PSA a clever title that will make it memorable to viewers.)
Gathering Content:

The most critical elements in a public service announcement are the facts, statistics, opinions, and quotations that you choose to share with
viewers. Without convincing content, you’ll never be able to convince viewers to feel the same way that you do about your topic.

Use the table below to begin collecting content for your public service announcement.
