Building code are standards set up for safety and the wellbeing of those that
reside inside. These standards must be followed for a building to be considered legally
safe. With thousands of codes out there for every process and every inch of a buildings
design, they are all there to ensure that the environment you walk into every day is safe.
Electrical connections and voltage for the home, water connections as well as fire, and
access for Disabilities (ADA). Code are an extremely important part of residential design
primarily for the safety and wellbeing of you.
I would like to look at a couple of examples of how knowing the codes will
specifically affect my future application of code factors while designing. One example
would be the use of floor space needed for different areas of the home such as door
placement and being able to have use of the full swing. Utilizing the spacing of different
components to ensure that there is plenty of room for an emergency evacuation. Making
sure that electrical components are separated from other hazards and that control panels
are easily accessible in case of an emergency. Making sure that the proper amount of
electricity is coming into the home and that electrical appliances are properly connected
and properly access for safety. It is important to me that a home be as safe as it possibly
can and the codes are there to help me make sure that this happens.

The main advantages of having sprinkler systems in residential application is
that they have saved a lot of families lives and have prevented fires from causing drastic
damage to homes. Now, the major disadvantage to having a sprinkler system in a
residential application is that it can be a potential pollutant source to the potable water
system from cross connections exposing health hazards that include, “stagnant water,
non-potable piping, heterotrophic bacteria, and chemicals.” (Water Works) With the
water source sitting in the pipes and potentially being a part of the same piping lines,
this could cause a very horrid health hazard.
In the great state of Virginia, they use the 2012 International Residential Code,
but have removed requirements to sprinkler new townhomes and one- and two-family
homes. (Sprinkler)
Sprinkler systems should be required in all renovations of existing residential
buildings because some of the materials the houses were built with aren’t up to the
current code and standards we use today. With the positive statistics that has been
generated from installing sprinkler systems in homes, I believe that sprinklers in these
homes will save so many lives, buy residents time by containing the fire until help
arrives and help prevent severe property damage.

Electrical codes are important in protecting people and property from issues arising from
electricity. There are many points of failure that can originate from improper installation
of electrical components, ranging from nuisance breaker tripping and overloading of
circuits to electric shock and death from electrocution to house fires. More importantly,
once installed, it has to be able to be repaired and replaced safely. NFPA 70 is the leading
electrical code pertaining to both residential and commercial projects
(FoxValleyFire.com). So many elements of your home require the electrical aspects to
function properly. First, steps have to be taken to make sure that the correct voltage
comes into the structure. In order to prevent damage and jumps in current, proper sizes
of wire have to be utilized and wiring has to be properly insulated. Insulation is also
required to help prevent electric shock and fire. There are codes for how much and how
many things can be tied to a circuit. There are codes that require your smoke detectors to
be wired together so if one goes off, the whole residence is alerted. Proper grounding and
bonding is required to ensure that if there is a spike or surge in the area from damaging
the electrical components in your home. There are so many things in your home you
would never imagine that can be affected by electrical codes not being followed.

Jenny Donahue’s apartment was created with great care to both her interests and the needs of her son.
Parenting and living with a child or person with special needs, specifically autism in this clients case,
requires constant attention. One might say your life and surroundings revolve around those special needs.
The furniture, lighting, finishes, and accessories both encompass the Art Nouveau style that Jenny loves,
but stays minimal as to not overwhelm and over-stimulate her son. There is a sense of minimalism both in
color and detail, while still possessing the smooth, curved lines and organic nature of Art Nouveau. There
are bright, modern pops of colors and accents spread across common areas to both stimulate and further
accentuate bringing the outdoors Jenny loves so much. The white walls and black molding provide an
interesting take on contrast and balance. There are no obstructions across the space, allowing for more
natural lighting. Furniture is placed spatially and not over-cluttered to both allow space and integrating a
sense of safety for personal sensory integration practices and not to over stimulate. A variety of textures
and accessories are provided for further sensory integration and calming techniques. All fabrics are stain
resistant and easy to clean, a great quality to have in a household where crafting is welcome. The lighting
fixtures, flooring, and finish colors selected further add to the organic, natural, and Art Nouveau inspired
look the client requested. The lighting selected provides various lighting options and ambience, in a
Tiffany-style throughout the 2nd floor, reminiscent of classic Art Nouveau. All of the finishes and flooring
selected are highly resilient and sustainable and contribute to a highly healthy environment. Custom
designed pieces both fit the clients personal needs and are unique, but also assist in cost relief for the
clients low budget. While the 2nd floor encompasses a Modern, more graphic and contrasting Art Nouveau
design and needs to be treated carefully as a common area, the accessories for the master bedroom were
selected to fit a more classic Art Nouveau design. The master bedroom should be a space where the client
feels calm, relaxed, and can escape from her hectic lifestyle. The accessories are natural and organic in a
more feminine way and include antiques appropriate for the period. Jenny’s bedroom will follow more of a
calming, relaxation feel, with soft, feminine touches in a more classic Art Nouveau style.
