The best way to teach depends on contribution of a teacher or supervisor -

imparting curiosity, and passion in mind of his student so that he will do a

desired thing and of a student - wishing to learn and to progress. The teaching
process can not just focus on one aspect i.e. focusing on positive actions.

In business environment at many companies, regular appraisals of employees are

carried out. Such appraisals have both - strengths and negative actions or areas of
improvement. Without correcting negative actions, a person can not progress well
and not doing so will be harmful for both - company and employee.

Take a hypothetical example of a school going student. This student learns

different subjects such as languages, history, math and so on. If a student is
strong in history but weak in math, it is duty of his teacher to tell student his
shortcomings. May be student is not putting enough efforts or his concepts of math
are not clear. Student may think that whatever efforts his is putting for math are
sufficient and are in right direction. If teacher ignores student's weakness in
math then student may remain weak in math forever. When student will go to higher
standards, he even may fail because of poor math. This is just because of student
was not told to improve his math. So, it is very essential for a teacher to tell
student his weaknesses, and where he need progress.

Along with feedback of a teacher, a student also should put efforts. Take an
fictitious example of a graduate course student. At graduate level, student needs
to do lot things on his own such as experimentation, searching of scientific
papers, discussing with fellow students, doing analyses of data, and drawing
conclusions. Typically when student meets his research supervisor, he gives only
directions and doing remaining work is responsibility of a student. Thus, in
teaching process contribution of student is also necessary and teaching process
will not complete by praising positive actions and ignoring negative ones.

Admittedly, constant focus on negative actions can make deleterious psychological

impact. This particularly true in case of a kinder-garden student. If his teacher
constantly focuses on negative actions, the student may dislike education process
and school. In certain circumstances, it is required to focus on positive actions
of a student and ignore negative actions. But, author unfairly generalizes the
issue. In many cases, it is necessary to tell negative actions or shortcomings or
areas of improvements to a student. Then only a student can progess in true sense.
