STATES’
GOVERNMENT BUDGET 2018
F
or Budget 2018, several states
including Sabah, Johor, Pahang
and Melaka projected budget
surplus with forecast of growth in
the total budget expenditure. The
Penang state government projected
a RM748.5 million deficit budget for
next year compared to RM667.1 million
in the 2017 budget which will be met
from the State Accumulated Savings.
This represents almost 58.0% of the
state’s budget of RM1,300.0 million
in 2018 and annual growth of 12.2%
against last year’s deficit. The state
government estimated a revenue
collection of RM503.8 million, a
smaller figure compared to 2017 due
to limited state revenue resources,
as revenue from investment interests
is expected to drop owing to a
reduction in the dividend payments
and fixed deposit interest rates, which
contributes further to lower revenue
estimates for 2018. Similar to Penang,
Selangor also projected a very high
budget deficit representing almost
28.0% of its state budget of RM3,120.0
million. The budget itself is lower than
the 2017 budget of RM3.45 billion
due to the need to have “sustainable
